Many gamers should remember last year's anticlimactic game, Spiderman: Shattered Dimensions.

Shattered Dimensions was NOT what most hoped for, even though it was mildly successful in the market. The game covered some new gameplay ground for Spidey, but lacked the free-world aspect that made other Spiderman games so hot (Spiderman 2: The Game comes to mind).

In Gamespot's latest podcast, Tom McShea, Tom Magrino, and Brendan Sinclair talk about the next Spiderman game. The actual podcast is well over an hour long, but about thirty minutes in is when the game comes up. Here are some highlights from the podcast:

"Did you ever play 'Prototype'? Do you know how 'Prototype' is absolutely broken in close-quarters combat? It just doesn't work? Because the game is all about sweeping huge movements and when you're close there's no precision, it's just a sloppy mess. THAT is what Spiderman was...it was fun to move around, and all of a sudden you're fighting people and it's like, 'this sucks'!"

"It has this cause-and-effect gameplay, which seems ridiculous."

"So, you've got this time-travel mechanic, where you're gonna have...Spiderman 2099 fighting a robot that's kicking his butt, and then Amazing Spiderman is at the same time fighting that robot prototype, and if he crushes the prototype then the 2099 robot gets weaker."

Amongst cracking jokes, the much ballyhooed cause-and-effect concept is not seeming to be liked so far. Even though speculation is definitley at a high, hope is also high since the developers have a year to right their wrongs. These guys in the podcast don't seem to know very much about Spiderman 2099, but the podcast is funny and interesting.

Spiderman: Edge of Time is due to be released later this fall! Follow the jump to listen to the podcast in its entirety.

The podcast also discusses a new Bloodrayne game in the works, so hearken all ye who play to hear the good news!

Spiderman 2 set the bar way high, and many after that failed even with next gen systems. Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction was the greatest Hulk game we'll ever see. Every superhero game should be free roam, otherwise what is the point? Spidey needs to swing around, Superman needs to fly, etc. Wolverine although repetitive was awesome just for the brutality factor. superhero games beg for details faithful to both their powers and a well written story. I don't understand how with games like Spidey 2, Hulk Ultimate Destruction, and Arkham Asylum where these moron companies like Sega can go wrong.

Tela- Shattered was shit, don't bother! I also loved Web of Shadows, Dimensions didn't have any of the qualities that Shadows had. Rent it if you're too curious, but don't waste your money buying it.

WTF, definitely pick up Shattered Dimensions, it went from 60 to 30 bucks. You could buy it used for even more. It's not the greatest game but it's worth playing.

Shattered Dimensions was a very entertaining game. Im a huge SM fan and id have to say pick up a copy for cheap! only thing i didnt like is that it has no replay value. So once you beat it and get all of the web of destiny stuff, use it as a trade in for something else that comes out. Definitely gonna cop that Edge of Time when it comes out!

come to think of it, if they made Shattered Dimensions 50% open world on each of the 4 SM worlds, and gave constant updates for new levels, bosses, etc, it would be worth keeping! That's really the only thing that was missing from SD to be honest with you.

I enjoyed Web of Shadows, Prototype and Shattered Dimensions. No matter what there will be some flaw to games. Web of Shadows had tons of awesome characters thrown in, that you couldn't play as and Spiderman's voice sucks. Prototype starts off with a new power like every 5 minutes and then half way through the game nothing new happens, just bigger monsters. Dimensions was awesome in the aspect of each character and their levels were different. But then using the character to do the same thing somewhere new and then all of a sudden the game ends was annoying. Games aren't perfect, but they do help spawn new ideas for someone to eventually get it right. And perhaps they arent worth $60 brand new, but you can still have fun. My favorite game was Arkham Asylum but I HATED the Killer Kroc level. If you can find a way to play the game to get your own experience, to gather your own opinion for a reasonable price don't let anyone convince you not to.

I don't understand why Shadows is gettin' some negativity. The same engine they used on Spidey 2 for Ps2 was used for Shadows, but greatly increased with fighting and style beyond a lot of other games out there. Not to mention Shadows actual storyline was on par with Spuidey 1 and 2 for the Ps1. Monster Ock/Symbiote Wolverine, anybody?

Dimensions seemed like they lacked a lot of the essence of what Spidey games are about, and the story was very weird. Why sell a game for different variations of one character when you can just have one or two variations with the best quality?

Then again, I haven't played Dimensions, but from what I've SEEN, it doesn't look like a bar setter or anything special. Just an ordinary game that people wouldn't desire playing through more than once.

@Jer3miah - Symbiote Wolverine / Wolvenom, was AWESOME! The gameplay was awesome. The voices were off, and the fact that you couldn't use Moon Knight, Wolverine, etc. well for lack of better words, it broke my heart.

Dimensions is good, becasue it was orignial and we finaly got to be stealthy and dark at the same time, meaning "Spider-Man Noir" sets in the 1930's. I've never had a problem with the Spider-Man games, they were all great to me. But that's just one man's opinion. With "Spider-Man Web of Shadows", you could at least have 4-5 different opening's. Witch would be cool and you could in many different directions with it.

the only that suck about dimensions was the voice acting was terrible! (and only the wii got the different costumes!) but other then that i loved it! bring be a game like that with the 2099 spiderman!

^ you mean web of shadows.

I think a combe of web of shadows and dimensions would be the boss. I would exclude ulitmate spiderman. Free roam in 3 different cities in 3 different eras with 3 different spidermen? yes please. and each spiderman should have a different mode of trasportation, amazing web swings, 2099 glides, and noir jumps roof top to roof top.

Rocketico: Only Spidey and the gang leader's voices sucked. Everyone else's was fine. See, incorporating more than one character for use in a game takes away data from the developers to develop better attention to the main character. Multiple character use doesn't work with most games these days. For instance, turning Arkham City into multi-player would make the game suck. Too much data and programming is required. It'd take away from everything else.

barber2323: LoL! So what? I've read the reviews and I've seen the game (in person) played before it came out. I didn't judge it by its entirety, but rather by what I've experienced with it. Heh, you crazy, yo. I know you a fan, but lay off my d*ck, son, lol.

Seriously, how anybody can rate WoS above SD is beyond me. I like both games and at the time it came out i thought WoS was pretty good, but i'm currently in the process of playing through it again and i have to say after SD the obviousness of how rushed and unfinished it was is borderline infuriating. It had some great ideas and other things going for it but absolutely nothing works like its supposed to, the graphics are pretty weak in comparison now and the voice acting is actually really annoying. Yea, SD also has its flaws but nowhere near as many, couple of camera issues and thats about it. Just because it isn't free roam doesn't mean there isn't any webswinging, the levelbased gameplay made for a far more focused, less repetitive and polished experience. It's like playing a cartoon, definitely a good few steps in the right direction and seeing stuff like this that tries to steer Beenox in a different direction is a bit disappointing. Don't even need to listen to the podcast to find out these guys haven't got a clue what they're talking about.
