MORTAL KOMBAT Scores A Flawless Victory At The Box Office With Strong $22.5M Domestic Opening

Mortal Kombat may not have won over the majority of critics, but Warner Bros.' R-rated video game reboot is currently performing very well at the box office with a strong $22.5 million domestic opening.

Mortal Kombat is well on its way to scoring a flawless victory at the domestic box office after taking in an impressive $22.5 million over the course of its opening weekend.

This gives the violent R-rated reboot the second biggest bow of the pandemic era behind another recent Warner Bros. release, Godzilla Vs. Kong, which has now passed the $400 million mark globally (you'll find a breakdown below).

Mortal Kombat also took in $6.3 million from 37 foreign territories, which brings its global total to $50 million (the movie has been playing in several overseas locations since April 12). Considering the video game adaptation was made on a relatively modest $55 million budget, this bodes well for a sequel.

The movie received a mixed reception from critics (it currently sits at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes), but fans of the long-running video game series seemed happy enough with the martial arts action and gory fatalities on display - although the fact that the actual MK tournament doesn't take place has come in for some backlash.

Tell us, did you enjoy Mortal Kombat? Would you be interested in a sequel? Drop us a comment down below.

I mean it was bad, but I loved every second cole wasn't on screen and I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to see a sequel with Johnny Cage

@TheMapleSyrup - I can understand why Cage wasn't included now as Kano had all those story and character beats, Cage would have had. That being said. Cole was lame. I'm sure if Lewis Tan had to be in the movie he could have played another character all together, and away with the family drama. Added nothing to the story.

I'm going to give it another watch maybe next week, as i really didn't enjoy anything after laser eye died. Lui kang was a straight up paraody. The subzero v sporcion round 2 wasn't as amazing as i was expecting. I'll say it again, the trailer really over sold this movie.

It had a lot of issues, but I definitely was entertained for the most part.

Hopefully they fix those issues if they continue this series and we don't wait like 20 years for another one :(

(Cole and his family were massively bland)

Also, GvK breaking 400mil WW is good to see! I know it'll probably be less than ideal at the end of the day because of the pandemic, but those numbers seem like a good sign for the box office for movies late summer into fall/winter.

That's not bad. I planned on watching it on the big screen, but after reading some comments on this site and some reviews I'm not too sure anymore
