STREETS OF RAGE Live-Action Film In Development From JOHN WICK Creator Derek Kolstad

Here's an exciting development. It's being reported that, following the success of Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA is now developing a Streets of Rage live-action film with Derek Kolstad penning the script.

Deadline is reporting that SEGA is in the very early stages of developing a live-action film based on the popular Streets of Rage beat 'em up video game franchise.

John Wick and Nobody scribe Derek Kolstad penned the script on spec, which certainly bodes well for the film's prospects considering his immense success in the action genre.

Streets of Rage is a classic beat-em-up that debuted in 1991 for the Sega Genesis and has spawned three sequels, with the most recent, Streets of Rage 4, arriving in 2020. It received strong reviews and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide, proving the franchise is still quite popular even thirty years after its original launch.

It's hard to say what the movie could be about, but in the first game players could take control of three characters - Adam, Axel, or Blaze - and fight to save the city from being overtaken by a criminal syndicate led by Mr. Big

It's probably no coincidence that this news broke shortly after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 proved to be yet another box office smash, grossing over $231.8 million worldwide to date. Streets of Rage will also be produced by dj2 Entertainment, with Escape Artists coming on board as co-producer.

While Kolstad didn't pen the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4 or John Wick: Chapter 5, he remains one of Hollywood's most in-demand writers and is currently hard at work on Starz's John Wick prequel series The Continental, Netflix's Splinter Cell series, Just Watch MeAcolyteJust Cause, and Hulu's Hitman series.

If there isn’t chicken or apples randomly on the street for a health boost, then why are we doing this?

In future news: We decided to go the Hollywood route and completely ignore the game. We just use the name to get you in the theaters and deliver a mediocre film. We never learn.

I say that as if Streets of Rage has a particularly engaging story lol

@MyCoolYoung - I can't remember. I just remember picking up food off of the ground to gain strength. Just like Final Fight and every other side scrolling beat em up from the Golden era of video games. I dunno, it's just something about the simplicity of a beat em up that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Staying at the arcade at dangerous times of night. Fingers slick from greasy pizza, dirty carpets with the stench of years of neglect, quarter slots that don't work. And endless trash talking with friends...

Good times!

@DarthOmega - the stench of years of neglect is hilarious lol but I agree that nostalgia associated with those games is next level

@DarthOmega - I'd actually prefer a Final Fight movie. Enjoyed both as a kid, but always preferred Final Fight more.

To see Guy, Mike Haggar, Sodom & Damnd / Thrasher on screen would be pretty cool to me before Streets of Rage.

Is a "Sega Cinematic Universe" in the works? I wouldnt mind, both Sonic movies are great.
They own A LOT of iconic IPs, House of the Dead for example could be a fantastic dark comedy (if done right, not the Uwe Boll abomination), Yakuza could be INSANE with a big budget.

The Shenmue anime is also great, so I wouldnt mind if they start developing animated projects, too.

@GhostDog - The story is better told than in the games, imo.
I hope they continue the story this way, because the third game...yikes.

Sega flipping out after a totally different company came in and revitalized the series (and arguably the genre) after Sega sat on their hands for 20 years. I loved Sega at the time SoR originally came out. I have little love for them any more.

@RealTurner - Yakuza has been carrying the entire company for the past 15 years.

I say they should embrace the cheese, double down on the campy and never let up on the serious tone of the main characters, no matter how ridiculous shit gets around them. Think Dolf Lundren Old Spice commercial, meets Team America dialouge, with John Wick Fight scenes. This could be a gem... Throw in Final Fight cameos and "Boomshakalaka"- we got a fan-chise!
