TOMB RAIDER Sequel Writer-Director Misha Green Reveals "Unapproved" Title: OBSIDIAN

We recently learned that MGM's planned Tomb Raider sequel had landed a new director in Misha Green, and the Lovecraft Country creator has now taken to Twitter to tease the (unapproved) title...

It looks like the title of the upcoming Tomb Raider sequel will be Tomb Raider: Obsidian.

Writer-director Misha Green took to Twitter to announce that the first draft of the script is complete, and while she pointed out that Obsidian is not the "approved" title (yet), it's probably only a matter of time before it's made official.

Does this title tell us anything about the plot? Well, Lara Croft does encounter obsidian collectibles and the like in the games (a blade is an important artefact in Shadow of the Tomb Raider), but nothing specific really comes to mind.

Green, the creator/showrunner behind HBO's acclaimed Lovecraft Country, is set to make her feature debut with the sequel, and Alicia Vikander has been confirmed to reprise the role of Lara Croft. Angelina Jolie previously played the character in 2001's Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel.

Ben Wheatley (Rebecca, Kill List) was attached to direct, but evidently parted ways with the project.

Roar Uthaug helmed the recent reboot, which was a modest hit (close to $275 million globally) despite getting mixed reviews. Tomb Raider 2 will be produced by Graham King via his GK Films banner, along with Elizabeth Cantillon via The Cantillon Company.

Production was set to commence last year prior to the pandemic forcing industry-wide delays, and the movie was recently undated. Now, it'll likely be well into 2021 before cameras start rolling.

Green is also set to write and produce Netflix's The Mother, and will work as a producer on upcoming films Cleopatra Jones and The Gilded Ones.

Really excited for this.

The first one had some issues, but Alicia as Croft is very good and close to the newer games. Greene is also a very good writer and directed a good episode of Lovecraft Country.

I haven't seen the first remake of this franchise. Is it any good?

Thought the first one was above average, really hope they get a Good Director.
Shame that Ben Wheatley left, as I loved Free Fire.

Wonder if Gareth Evans will fancy it?

The first one really sucked, a complete downgrade from the games in every regard. Just play the reboot series, better story, great setpieces and fun to play.

This skin always cracks me up

Big fan of the first one honestly. It’s not perfect but I’m excited for round 2.

I trust Misha Green so go for it! The first one was mediocre, but there's always room for improvement

The first one was really average. It offered nothing new compared to the games, nor did it really excel at anything when looked at on it's own.

I hope the second one justifies its existence, because (as I've said multiple times before) I want stuff in a videogame movie to happen other than just for the sake of ''hey remember this cool thing from the games?''

I think as it is a direct sequel to the first one we can guess one big plot point in the film. This secret society that she found out about that TRINITY.

I still need to see the first one with this version of the character. Seems the actor and everyone involved has enjoyed being part of the franchise. And this sequel title sounds badass!

hmmm shame wheatley left was looking forward to him directing, not keen on vikander either, shes not a terrible choice but i feel there are better choices, for the mainstream i like daisy ridley as a choice , as an outside choice i thought perdita weeks wouldnt be a bad choice tbf .

i think tomb raider could do well as a more gritty harder rated movie, something along the likes of lone survivor levels of grit n carnage, add that real sense of danger and realism making lara seem really at threat.
