EDITORIAL: Grading The Box Office Performances Of 2017 CBMs

In this awesome editorial brought to you by no other than the one and only Ruthless, I take a look at the box office from all the CBMs last year. Here I use math, calculations and box office techniques.

Logan

Opening Weekend: $88 Million
Domestic: $226 Million
Worldwide: $619 Million

Analysis: This opened pretty high for an R-Rated film and had average legs (2.56). The entire run was average and just okay. I give it a box office letter grade of a solid B.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Opening Weekend: $147 Million
Domestic: $390 Million
Worldwide: $864 Million

Analysis: This had a massive opening that opened much higher than the first one did. It also had great legs (2.66) for a sequel, especially one that opened close to $150 million. Worldwide also saw an increase from the first one, thanks especially to Europe. I give the James Gunn film a box office letter grade of an A.

Wonder Woman

Opening Weekend: $103 Million
Domestic: $413 Million
Worldwide: $822 Million

Analysis: What more can I say about this historic box office run? Even after having a big opening, even with lots of competition, the Patty Jenkins film still managed to have historic and absolutely wonderful legs of a perfect 4.0 multiplier. That is unheard of of not just any $100 million opener, but any $80 million opener too. This became the highest grossing film of the DCEU and even outgrossed an Avengers film domestically. Just a really mindblowing and once-of-a-lifetime box office run that definitely gets a well deserved grade of an A+

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Opening Weekend: $117 Million
Domestic: $334 Million
Worldwide: $880 Million

Analysis: This had a modest opening. Only opened $3 million higher than the very first Spider-Man movie from 2002. Pretty underwhelming considering all the hype and RDJ playing a big role in the marketing. Not to mention the worst and biggest second weekend drop in the history of the MCU. Managed to get some decent legs in a dull month. Also underwhelming that it only grossed $40 million more than TASM2 did overseas. I give its box office run a letter grade of a solid C.

Thor: Ragnarok

Opening Weekend: $123 Million
Domestic: $315 Million
Worldwide: $864 Million

Analysis: This opened much higher than anyone was predicting and higher than a Spider-Man film featuring RDJ. That's amazing considering how the Thor franchise had only performed decently at the box office before this movie. Despite another CBM opening two weeks after this one, the Taika Waititi still mananged to have great legs for a sequel (2.57). I give its box office run a letter grade of an A

Justice League

Opening Weekend: $94 Million
Domestic: $229 Million
Worldwide: $658 Million

Analysis: This opened much lower than any of the previous DCEU films despite being an ensemble film featuring the most iconic heroes in comics. That was partly due to the abmyssal reception than the last Snyder film received and the dull marketing. Still had decent legs thanks to the holidays and broke records in China and Brazil. I give its box office run a letter grade of a C-

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Opening Weekend: $220 Million
Domestic: $620 Million
Worldwide: $1.3 Billion

Analysis: This had a mammoth opening weekend. The second highest in history. Had great legs and got close to a 3x multiplier. The third Star Wars film in a row to make more than half a billion domestically. Sold around 70 million tickets in the United States. That is more than all but 2 CBMs. Also the most profitable film of 2017. I give its box office run a letter grade of an A+

So let's see how I graded all of the CBMs from 2017...

  • Justice League - C-
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming - C
  • Logan - B
  • Thor: Ragnarok - A
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - A
  • Star Wars: The Last Jedi - A+
  • Wonder Woman - A+
Looks like Diana and Rey won the box office of 2017!

Well ...this is certainly biased given the numbers presented. Hate to break it to you, but as much as I loved the Last Jedi, it was not an A+. Hell, it dropped off pretty significantly in its second week and Jumanji destroyed the shit out of it eventually.

For the mainstays of the site, this is Frozenjoy, correct? If so, that makes A LOT of sense.

How did Homecoming get a C? it had better legs than the Last Jedi (2.85>2.81), which you rated with and A+, even though that TLJ is Star Wars and had December and only Jumanji to compete with while Homecoming had a crowded July with BFTPOTA, Valerian, Emoji, Atomic Blonde and Dunkirk. It is the second highest grossing film of the Spiderman franchise even though it´s the 6th film in it, we had already seen spiderman with the Avengers in Civil War and the last spidey film had an abysmal reception. This is a bit biased.

I officialy grade Homecoming´s box office with an A and downgrade TLJ´s to a B.

The latter is because TLJ is the sequel to the third highest grossing film of all time and even with inflation, it didn´t manage to make more than Age of Ultron (which was considered a dissappointing box office run by almost everyone, including you, Ruth).

Aside from that, I really like the idea behind this article and hope that we get more of them. Also, I´d also love to see an article looking back at initial box office predictions vs their actual performance.

Your judgement, trust I will not.

All you did was plaster Wonder Woman all over the place. She got beat out by several of these movies. Unfortunately you lost me right off the bat with your grading of Logan. It did freaking fantastic for an r rated film. You dont exactly have a good reputation with this box office stuff. Why are you obsessed with it?

So Spider-Man Homecoming made more profit than Guardians and Thor yet somehow it had a disappointing box office run...

Funny that The Last Jedi dropped about $700M from The Force Awakens yet you'd give both an A+

@TheOncomingStorm - It really does read as Wonder Woman is the basis for her scoring, and their scores are reflected on her perceived performance compared to Wonder Woman. Instead of each films own merit and performance. It's ridiculous, and a big reason why nobody takes this stuff seriously.

Their perceived performance. Oops. Just seen that.

@WYLEEJAY - Just like last year when she scored Deadpool A and Suicide Squad A+ despite Dedpool making more money and profit whilst costing less!!
