Mark Pedowitz Talks AMAZON, Continuity Between Movies And TV & BATMAN/SUPERMAN

The CW network president shares his thoughts on how DC's small screen properties can interact with their big screen ones, the current status of Amazon, whether there are any plans to bring Batman or Superman back to the small screen and much more.

Thanks to Collider, we have a transcription of Mark Pedowitz's discussion with journalists at the CW's TCA panel yesterday. Below, he talks about plans for Amazon and The Flash as well as shedding some light on how what DC and Warner Bros. are doing on television affects the movies.

In terms of The Flash, DC has movie plans for that character, as well. Are there any conflicts with you doing a potential spin-off for The Flash, or have they signed off?

None that I’m aware of. I’ve spoken to Diane Nelson, who runs DC Comics, as well as Peter Roth, and we’re good to go. Greg [Berlanti] has spoken to them. There are no conflicts, in any way, shape or form.

In May, you said that you were still developing the Wonder Woman origin story, Amazon. Does The Flash put that on hold, or is Amazon still a potential series for the network?

Amazon is on pause right now. The script isn’t quite where we want it. It’s an iconic DC character, and we are not going to put it on unless it works. And now, having the DC universe expand, with the origins of Black Canary coming on this year, as well as potential origins of The Flash, it’s better to wait and get it right.

Beyond there being no conflict between the DC shows and movies, is there the chance for actual continuity between them, and for them to reference each other?

We haven’t had those discussions yet, as far as that goes. That probably could happen, but they may exist in separate universes. I don’t know yet.

We’re evidently two years away from the Superman/Batman teaming on screen. Do you have thoughts, a few years beyond, about reviving those franchises for television?

I always have thoughts about that. But, the question goes to, “Does the studio want to move them back to TV or keep them on the theatrical side?” I have to listen to Warner Bros. and what they want to do with those characters that are iconic to them. So, we’ll see what happens.

I hope Amazon doesn't get off the ground, Flash is much better suited to television providing they can get the superspeed right.

I said this yesterday with a bit of shame! lol but Today after thinking it through, it could actually work. All they really have to do is just up the cinematic scale for the film adaption. This is how characters should be introduce if you're trying to build a large universe! Now we know that if this is the way in which they'll make the films (from television shows) more characters can easily be introduced on the big screen without the huge risks you know? But then again this is only my opinion...what do you guys think??

The seperate universe thing is kind of making me scratch my head...So they can appear on the big screen together? But when it comes time for their solo outings we can follow the television shows?

I would love to see a Batman show. Make it for HBO this way it can be darker & not have to be made for the family. I would have Dick Grayson in it too. Have him be around seventeen so he is not so young. Also having Robin in the tv series would be great so people finally see Robin is an important character to the myths of Batman.

Wonder Woman looks sexy in that pic in the article. Sorry, I had to say it.

I really hope they connect the TV universe and DCCU. Would be pretty confusing otherwise.

i just dont feel like the CW is the right place to do a show about/with super powers. The always seem very limited in their funds.

Plus I'd love to see Amell's Green Arrow take on Batman.

If DC really plans on trying to catch up to Marvel in the movie department, they aren't doing a good job so far.

I really hope this all works out well... I would prefer the shows to be in continuity with the films for simplicity's sake but I'm totally okay with them being seperate universe as well as long as that seperation does not affect the types of stories they can tell or limit the amount of iconic characters that can appear. I want the tv shows to be able to use any character they want if the story allows for it. The movies on the hand don't have time to include many characters so that can rest on the shows shoulders this way...

I'd live to see a live action Justice League TV show following solo outings of the big seven.

That would be so [frick]ing cool. It'll basically be the live action version of the DCAU give or take a franchise.

I cannot believe that people want them to connect a cheap TV show with the DCCU. Especially when the show will probably be a cheesy soap like Arrow. I like Arrow, but having it connected to the DCCU would make me sick and would devalue the overall product.

Save Wonder Woman for the big screen!

I'm honestly getting the feeling that we are going to start getting a DC TV universe and a DC movie universe. Except that the TV universe seems to be getting up on their feet faster. But if we have 2 universes, I think that would be kind of of badass in a way. Could be confusing for the average joe but still badass.

I don't think it would confusing at all to have different incarnations. There should be many versions of these characters running around at once! They're iconic. Like Frankenstein, you can have a lot of different actors play him because they will all have varying and valid interpretations. The character is an icon that can afford that. These DC characters are the same. People need to stop being afraid of confusing the mythical GA... The audience of today I feel is more than willing and smart enough to accept multiple versions of the same characters existing simultaneously and it's about time IMHO.

LMAO I dont think fake IDs could work for 6 year olds so I would go with the permission slips.

I dont understand what is so hard about adapting Wonder Woman well to screen. Its like they honestly dont want a positive female role model for lil girls out there.

Connecting the Film and TV universes would be a great idea if they didnt use the soap opera style they are using for Arrow. On the other hand CW is the only network I can see superheroes getting more than 2 seasons.

Film and tv separate universes. Flash needs his own film trilogy plus to be in a justice league (Dare I say, trilogy?)

I thought that this show was going to be, as the phrase goes these days "grounded in reality" and that no one on Arrow was going to have superpowers. Now Canary and Flash are going to be in it...how's this going to work?
frankjaeger
frankjaeger - 7/31/2013, 9:41 AM
I am one that thinks connecting the tv flash and having him show up in the justice league or if he is a decent up and coming actor in a Flash movie. They could have Green Arrow or Flash get some cameos in Batman/Supes movie or maybe a mention/end credit scene. Think it would be awesome. I bet they could convince a decent established actor now if they told him they could guarantee him a solo flash movie and a justice league movie to sign on for a season or two of a show. especially if the movies are in between

CherryBomb - 7/31/2013, 9:44 AM

I think it would be amazing if TV and Film could combine. It'll be great.

Also, maybe I'm glad Amazon is on hold, the CW's budget is never high and for a character like Wonder Woman the budget needs to be literally on Game of Thrones level.

Wonder Woman needs the move treatment, not TV, I wanna see her kick ass, I wanna see her fly and I want Themyscira to be visually amazing and I don't think the CW can give me that.

frankjaeger - 7/31/2013, 9:46 AM
And i agree with whoever said bringing a Superhero/CB to HBO/Showtime/Starz. The Punisher would be an awesome series on a premium channel. Starz just finished with Spartacus i'm sure they could use a fresh new show. Or maybe even Preacher. I dont see y marvel or dc havent done this yet

It's sounding more and more like these will be separate universes which is a mistake. If there will be a separate Flash movie while the TV show is on (and they still don't know if they will link them) that leads me to believe that they are using Wally West on the big screen. I certainly hope this is true.

This is pretty exciting time for DC fans.
Arrow, Flash and Booster Gold shows
and FINALLY the cinematic universe has hope.

Im not sure how much has to do with Kevin Tsujihara, but I always said once they get rid of Jeff Robinov, they would have a chance. So thank you!

Warner Bros needs to use anything that's working for them right now. Arrow is working for them right now. Therefore they need to use it. No I don't think there should be a TV show for every member of the league, but this is a good thing.

Have The Flash's origins on TV. You can still have him in the movies. Those can be season finales. Use what you can to build up to Justice League properly.

I close my eyes and can literally see monkeys [frick]ing a football. Thats what WB and DC have dine and continue to do. Another company just lays out the blueprint ..a basic formula for success and somehow they just prefer to [frick] that football over and over.

I can't believe they have greenlit Flash on TV without first discussing if the TV and Movie characters are in the same universe or not. They know, they just don't want to reveal anything yet. I think they absolutely should keep them in the same universe. This will put them much closer to a Justice League film, plus general audiences don't have an understanding of mulit-verse, like comic fans do. People I've talked to (non-fans) are already confused why Christian Bale will not be in the Batman/Superman film.
