DARK PHOENIX Director Simon Kinberg Praises Kevin Feige But Says He Has "No Idea" About Future X-MEN Plans

For many, Simon Kinberg is responsible for driving the X-Men franchise into the ground, and he's now weighed in on plans for a reboot, admitting that he hopes to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine.

While Marvel Studios has confirmed that a Fantastic Four reboot is in the works from director Jon Watts, we still don't know what exactly the plan is for the X-Men. The mutant superheroes definitely need some space to breathe, especially after Dark Phoenix served as a new low point for the franchise thanks to director Simon Kinberg's botched retelling of "The Dark Phoenix Saga."

Talking to IGN about his new movie The 355, Kinberg - who was a longtime writer and producer of the X-Men franchise before stepping into the director's chair - addressed what might come next.

"The honest answer is, I have no idea," he told the site (much to the relief of many of you we're sure) when asked if familiar faces from the X-Men movies could appear in the MCU. "And the other answer is, Kevin [Feige] knows what he is doing with the MCU. I would argue he's the greatest producer in the history of cinema. Truly. I mean, if you look at it pound for pound in terms of quality and in terms of obviously commercial success, there's no question the latter is true. So I don't know."

As for Kinberg, he admitted that it's impossible to imagine anyone other than Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine. However, he added "that there's an aspect of some of these characters where it's like, there are a lot of great Hamlets over time. And I think even Hugh felt that with the end of Logan."

If any actors from the past are going to return, then it will probably be in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Beyond that, we'd bet on Marvel Studios rebooting these characters in an effort to distance them as much as possible from the mistakes made by Kinberg and Bryan Singer.

What do you hope the future holds in store for the X-Men franchise?

I think it's gonna be a long, long, long time before we see another Wolverine on the big screen again. MCU is probably gonna take their time with the OG 5 X-Men, then get around to Wolverine.

@rebellion - Hollowood is just like D.C.; the biggest hacks will always thrive there. It's all about nepotism and one hand washing the other. "Talent" and even financial success come after cronyism.

@rebellion -Honestly, for his first movie, he did a good job on dark phoenix. The movie sucks but that train scene at the end was a reshoot and its really good. As a writer for X-men, yea he shouldn't be asked what his opinion is on what marvels going to do. He had a lot of chances and they didnt live up to the characters.

@rebellion -
He is the prince of hacks. I too am flummoxed that people keep giving him money to make really bad movies. He sits atop a mountain of dung and proclaims himself king of the hill.

@rebellion - He's a shit director but to say that he's a hack after looking at his body of work is just plain ignorant. He's produced some of the best comic book movies and tv shows that everyone here praises.

It was OK. Sherlock Holmes was pretty good but other than that he has managed to fail upwards.

I think that on Secret Wars, we will meet again with some X-Men character. Hugh no, but Dafne Keen may return as the adult version of X-23.

@Repian - by the time they get around to X-23, Dafne Keen probably is already in her mid or late-20s. I could see that casting return

Makes sense he has no idea about the X-Men plans, because he didn't seem to have them either when he was working with Fox right? Gottem!

Kidding aside, I think even Feige himself probably only has a few ideas as he probably is too busy with Phase 4 (and 5?) already.
