Darren Aronofsky Says That The Wolverine Is "Not A Sequel"

Hugh Jackman has already hinted that this next Wolverine story will not be a direct follow up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and now the film's director has emphatically confirmed it..

Darren Aronofsky is just getting ready to prep production on The Wolverine, a film which both he and star Hugh Jackman have already hinted will be a standalone story. Now, while speaking to PopcornBiz, Aronofsky leaves no doubt. He also says why he agree to take on the project in the first place..

“It's not a sequel,” Aronofsky told PopcornBiz, though he’s still playing close to the vest on the storyline specifics (which reportedly derive from the character’s seminal Japanese adventure in the 1982 Marvel Comics miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller). The director did, however, explain why he signed onto a superhero film after the Oscar-stalking success of “Black Swan.”

“I just love working with Hugh Jackman,” said Aronfsky, who previously collaborated with Logan’s Aussie actor alter ego on 2006’s “The Fountain.” “And I think there's something to be done in that world that hasn't been done yet. I'm also excited to do something that everyone wants to make, as opposed to being the only person that wants to make the film at the beginning.”

Popcornbiz then asked if he would be adapting his usual style to suit the CBM genre, or the opposite and going against the usual conventions to deliver something more along the lines of his previous work to which he replied..

“I have no idea,” he grinned. “We'll see what happens.”

Great. We have another Christopher Nolan on our hands! I must say, as much as I'm happy that they are distancing themselves from the last film, surely to discount that it ever happened is equally as silly? I mean, it was a movie that starred Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and so is Aronofsky's. Why not set it up as a standalone film but keep SOME story ties. Anyway, that's what makes most sense to me. I'm sure whatever Aronofsky delivers will be great regardless.

@ ralphmouth

I hope so, but whether they end up officially being a separate universe is doesn't really matter. It's not like an alternate universe in a comic where (usually) a different artist comes in and draws everyone a little (or a lot) different. I saw the film within the past couple of years, and I will see the same guy play the same character, and there's only so much you can do about the fact that in the audience's head, its the same thing. All the more reason to get it right the first time and put a little forethought into things instead of just trying to cram characters into a movie just to say "hey, well Gambit and Deadpool are in it now, everyone will come watch!" If they ever do make a Deadpool movie, they better find some Deadpooly way to DIRECTLY address that issue or else they are cowards and kill the integrity of the character(s) and their ability to make movies

It is my guess that this will fit into the timeline of the first Wolverine movie right after they killed all those people in Africa, but before Wolverine goes to Canada. So this really won't be a sequel because everyone from the Weapon X program will be left out except for maybe a 2 or so minute fight sequence with Sabretooth.

A stand alone Wolverine movie is fantastic. None of the movies that we have now. Jackman is great as Wolverine, just need a good story and better director.

Ralphmouth you are an idiot. What type of person picks on the person who says "First" yet doesn't contribute anything useful to the topic? Immature kid.

Vagina, vagina, oh, how I love thee...
let me count the ways! Hmmmm, too many
numbers...they make my head hurt! :D

But on topic...It would be nice if
ARONOFSKY just forgot WOLVERBEAN: BORINGINS
and actually made an accurate WOLVERINE
JAPAN SAGA!

Now wouldn't that be shocking! A director
for FOX actually making an accurate WOLVERINE
movie! ARONOFSKY has it in him!
But this is FOX we're talkin' about...FAT
CHANCE!

Now back to vaginas...now where's the boobies

wolverines gone solo loads of time this doesn't have to be some sort of sequel to origins, correct me if I am wrong but didn't chris claremonts series take place after he had joined the x-men, this could easily take place after X3. when ever it takes place hopefully aronofsky and jackman produce a good wolverine movie
Duhdaduh
Duhdaduh - 2/16/2011, 11:55 AM
my guess is it will still follow canon with orgins, but by saying its not a sequel, he means it will be nothing like the other one and won't have and references to it either. and why would it? Wolverine will be all the way in Japan this time, and his memory was wiped clean by the time he got there

well we all hope its R-Rated but remember FOX Studio wont allow Wolverine to be R-Rated cause PG-13 movies make loads of money for them.

I still have no clue what "it's not a sequel" means.

Does it mean they're going to just not reference the previous films, and just do a stand-alone tale that takes place in the same universe? Or are they going to completely throw out the continuity of the last 4 films and do whatever the hell they want (which to me, would be pretty stupid)?

It definitely wont be an R-rated film, but it DEFINITELY needs to be... If they are gonna make it PG-13... It needs to be as close to an R rating as possible without going over.... I dont care if they have to buy hookers for the rating comittee...

definetly giving this movie a chance for three reasons.

1.darren aronofsky
2.its not a sequel
3.wolverine limited series is an awesome story.

fox don't f*ck this movie up as you've done with every other comic book movie you've touched.

There's already enough loopholes in the continuity to say, the hell with it! If Emma Frost can be in Origins & First Class, why can't Deathstrike be in X2 & The Wolverine? Also, HELL YES to a real Wolverine costume (though I won't hold my breath).
