Last year, Taron Egerton (Kingsman, Black Bird) revealed that he did meet with Marvel Studios about a potential role amid rumors that he might be in line to take over from Hugh Jackman as the MCU's new Wolverine.
Egerton declined to reveal whether this was accurate at the time, but has now clarified that the character he pitched them on was not Logan.
Unfortunately, he didn't name this mysterious hero or villain, but whoever it was, he feels he's now aged out of the role.
"Well, the one that I mentioned is up for grabs, but I’m too old for it now. I think that ship has probably sailed," he told Total Film.
Egerton is only 33, which would suggest that this character is usually depicted as quite a bit younger, possibly even a teenager. The actor's comments indicate that we have yet to see them in the MCU, but that's not exactly a lot to go on.
It's probably moot now, anyway, and it sounds like he's also lost any interest he may have had in pursuing Wolverine.
"I’m not going to be the guy to play Wolverine. There’s no signs pointing towards that being the thing. And I just don’t know if I’m... maybe I’m getting to the point where that’s not what I want any more. I don’t know. I’d never say never, and I do love those movies. I’ve really enjoyed watching them over the past 10, 15 years. But whether I... You know, it may not be that they’re the right thing for me any more. I think maybe I’m past the point where that felt like the right thing [for my career]."
Jackman is set to return as Wolverine for Deadpool 3, and might well stick around in the MCU afterwards, so it might be a while before a new take on the mutant berserker is cast.
If and when it does happen, would you like to see Egerton don the claws, or do you have another actor in mind?
