Geoff Boucher of The LA Times talked with Hugh Jackman by phone recently. It seems the Aussie actor had much to say about his next foray into portraying every one's favorite nasty, little, Canadian, mutant known as The Wolverine.

From Hero Complex...

I remember coming by your office back in the summer of 2009, and you were already talking about your hopes of making a movie out of Marvel’s 1982 ”Wolverine” miniseries, the classic by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. And now you’re doing just that — and with director Darren Aronofsky, of all people. You must be thrilled.

I’m really, really pumped about it. I feel like all the planets are
finally aligned to make a great movie. We finally have the character and with this mythology — ever since [the 2000 Bryan Singer film] “X-Men,” when I was kind of hanging around and reading all these comics, because I was cast before I ever read any X-Men comics, so I was trying to get my hands on everything. I remember saying to [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner, “Lauren, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen this Japanese story, and I think it’s so good. It’s just genius, it’s brilliant.” And we kind of always talked about it from there on. I sort of even wanted to do that in the third X-Men movie at first, but we thought, no, we really need to establish who he is at first, and we did that [with "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"], and now this is sort of the cherry on top, to finally do it and have Darren Aronofsky direct it. I love his gung-ho attitude toward it and great vision. Straight off, it’s not a sequel, it’s a stand-alone, and I think we’re going to make one that people will describe as the best of the bunch.

Well, it better be, right? I mean with that revered source material and the director of “Black Swan” and “The Wrestler” — not to mention a script by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote “The Usual Suspects” – the expectations are going to be pretty high for this one.

Right, absolutely, and Chris McQuarrie has done a script that is just phenomenal. I read a story once that said that he wrote “The Usual Suspects” in 15 days, and with this one he said to me, “I just knew what I wanted, and it came out real easy.” And he’s done an unbelievable job with it, and with Darren it’s just really exciting. I’m as excited as anybody to see what we come up with. I know we’re going to be met with huge expectations. The expectations will be high, but he’s one of the great filmmakers out there. I worked with him before [on "The Fountain"], and I knew as soon as I met him that he should be doing movies like this. He’s been looking a long time, and I’ve asked him to do other ones, and this time it worked out. I’m beyond thrilled.

How much you weighing?

Right now, I’m at 210.

Wow, so you’re going to be bigger this time? Last time, you looked about, what, 190?

Yeah, right, I was 190, something like that. I don’t know how much I want to give away about it, but Darren said with the last one, ‘Hey you looked great, but you’re so tall that in those long shots you looked kind of like Clint Eastwood, and that’s not Wolverine.” He said that Wolverine, in the comics, is powerful, stocky, you know, he’s short and thick. So he said, ‘I want you to go there, get bigger.’ He’s going to come down after he gets done with all the black-tie events over and done with.

i've got no problem with hugh jackman as wolverine or darren aronofsky directing my biggest fear is the film studio fox, they're responsable for the mutant massacre since x-men - x-men first class.

This Japan story with Wolverine should happen after the events of X3, well he has gone to Japan after already being a X-Men in the comics hasn´t he?
Still I not interested on the movie, [frick]ing FOX will find a way of screwing it up like they always do with superhero movies.
Still nice find @Hawks!

Is this going to be filmed in 3d ?

@marvel72 well I doubt aronofsky is going to let fox have that much control after all it was his decision to make it a stand alone film.

It's nice to know that aronofsky knows what wolverine is meant to look like, hopefully this works out

I hope this works. The scenes in Batman Begins with Bruce's training were superb,
so if Aronofsky adopts a similar tone for The Wolverine it should be great.

I saw a pic of Hugh on Entertainment tv. He does look like he's getting bigger. That's cool, but I hope they get a taller villain because Jackman is kinda tall and I would hate the villain to be smaller than wolverine.

This movie is going to be great. I think it will be at least on the same level as Iron Man.

@whoa- Darren is a great director but I absolutely hated the fountain. I have never been more bored in my life. I do love The Wrestler and Black Swan though.

@ Lansdowne: That is Awesome!

@ Marvel72: it is a great movie. Very passionate and unique. If you love your wife it's hard to watch. I adore mine so it was something else!

@ LEEE: Tell me about it! Origins was just Horrid. A character that could very easily make for the best CBM made into one of the worst!

@ Lucaxmen: No, the Japanese arc takes place after Weapon X but before Alpha Flight. He Goes back to Japan after joining the X Men but he was just visiting and in the mean time has his first run in with Sabretooth after the Memory swipe.

I hope they bring Liev Schreiber back. If Hugh is 6'2 225 he will look huge if they focus on chest and shoulder training. Then they can get Schreiber who is 6'3 to about 250. That would make him imposingly larger.

@jimoakley Rothman has no sense whatsoever. Watch Fox Movie Channel sometimes, he hosts some of the "classic" movies, total douche nozzle.
tazmaniak
tazmaniak - 2/1/2011, 8:35 AM
Does anyone else think he doesn't need to be that big?Sure, Wolverine is ripped in the comics, but this is real life.Wolverine is supposed to be lithe and agile. He is a swift martial artist who is able to strike quickly.

A 6'2, 210+ lbs actor isn't going to be those things. In comics and animation, no matter how muscular he is, they can still make him move as swiftly as they want him to, but a real actor can't.

Probably in any part of the film he'll grab a Japanese Samurai mask that resembles his Comics' Wolverine mask or something like that...

yeah the old golen age costume would be sweet to see him in, the yeelow would be to much in a movie, but the brown would would be kinda epic on film i think, looks like they want this one to be way better then last film

I know all cbm actors cannot look exactly like their fictional counterpart's physiques, because most comic book characters look like they're on roids, but it's good to know he's getting as close as he can.....aaaannnnnddd probably doing a little bit or roids, "just half a cup" lol.

@ Starlight Idealy seeing him wear the brown and yellow would be huge, but you're right, it will most likely just be a short, impromptu, grab-right-before-an-unexpected-fight nod to the original, and then discarded.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 2/1/2011, 8:45 AM
@ tazmaniak: Wolverine would be built like the Mexican Luchadors Huge but very agile. He weighs 190 pounds w.o the claws but only 5'3. He would be about the size of Eddie Guerrero in his prime before death. The can still spring on ropes and stuff. Take Shelton Benjamin for example. He has a huge vertical jump, very acrobatic and flexible yet he weigh 240+ and stands 6'2. Big doesn't always = Clucnky and immobile.

damn Hawks, I missed this completely! I was almost finished my own article before I realized yours was here! Anyway, sounds great. Good to know Aronofsky has been doing his homework anyway.

Oh and The Fountain is a frakkin masterpiece, one of my favorite movies.

I have a feeling Aronofsky will be making Fox his bitches. And they'll be thanking him by sucking on his nutts for a long looooooooong time. Kinda like what Nolan did to WB.
