X-MEN Film Not Happening For A "Very Long Time"; FANTASTIC FOUR Casting Still Underway

While many were expecting Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios to announce the Fantastic Four cast today, we've received word that casting is still underway. Plus, it looks like X-Men is still a long way out.

Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios held a very eventful presentation this morning, debuting a few trailers and a ton of exclusive footage for the D23 Expo crowd, capped off with an epic reveal of the Thunderbolts lineup and the first footage from The Marvels.

However, while Marvel Studios delivered the goods, many had gotten their hopes up a little too high about a possible full cast reveal for the Fantastic Four and were undoubtedly disappointed when it didn't happen. We're not sure they held off, but it looks like Deadline's Justin Kroll had some insight on why Feige has been so secretive with recent casting news.

According to the ace trade reporter, "Feige for the most part, does not want to make big casting decisions without getting input from his director." With Matt Shakman (WandaVision; Game of Thrones) only recently coming onboard, it's highly unlikely they've cemented the cast without his input.

Having said that, it seems possible some of the recent rumors we've heard may have been Jon Watts' top choices, so there's always a chance Shakman could be looking at the same names. Then again, he may want to take things in a drastically different direction.

Kroll also says that an X-Men film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe "isn't happening for a very long time," adding that "outside of a writer being tapped, it's super unlikely any casting decisions get made on that one for some time.

That would seemingly debunk any of the recent Professor X or Magneto rumors we've heard, and strongly suggests that popular online "scoopers" are most likely just full of hot air.

He did later say he thinks the film will happen within the next four years or so, but it's still much further out than anyone thinks. That doesn't necessarily mean mutants like Wolverine and Storm won't show up before then, but it's seeming increasingly likely that they won't get their own film until Phase 7 or beyond.

In case you missed it, we LIVE blogged the entire event - which garnered over 60,000 visitors! - so be sure to head over HERE to get caught up on all the news!

Marvel should use real comedians for their comedies. We need a much funnier Thor. And X-Men and Fantastic Four need to be Marvel's most hilarious movies yet.

@Doomsday8888 - hahha they're doing the cartoon first so those still living will know what the hell is that x-men thing the elder used to talk about all the time.

@Doomsday8888 - To be fair, Marvel Studios won't stop making movies until they literally can't for whatever reason. It could go for a lifetime, beyond Feige, etc.

Whether it's legality or not, perosnally i think phase 7 onwards should be all about the mutants. Not sure who said it, but I like the sound of "The Mutant Saga" after we get done with The MultiVerse Saga.

I imagine we'll keep getting references and appearances scattered throughout phases 4 to 6 but they should very much be the all over focus when we get to them. That world is huge... and imagine all the tie in Disney+ stuff we could potentially get...Xforce, Excalibur, New mutants, Xtreme Xmen, The Brotherhood, Generation X, Hellifield Club, Weapon X...the list goes on.

I'm still hopeful we get Deadpool before then as he can fit anywhere if they tell the story right, but the Xmen world and characters are so vast, they can really afford to take their time with this one.

@UniqNo - I think we'll get Deadpool 3 in February 2025. That's together with July 2025 the only Phase 6 slot not filled, and I have idea what other movie are confirmed already (Shang-Chi 2 maybe? Which is more a July movie anyway)

As for future Mutants teams, I might look forward to Excalibur the most. Really like that corner of the Marvel universe.

@bkmeijer1 - Shang Chi definitely needs a sequel and we know RR is working on Deadpool 3 and already has Levy on board (not signed) to direct so I imagine it will be the one before end of the saga.

Excalibur was cool, but I'd want to see Nighcrawler there and we'll need him introduced in X-Men 1st.

But that's the thing there So much material there that they can easily take up a whole saga which is great!!

@UniqNo - exactly. Fox kept X-Men going for 20 years (albeit with less movies), so Marvel can definitely play the long game too.

And I hope they do, because that would I have a lot to look forward to as a fan over the next ten years. Especially if DC get's it's long-term plan if the ground too.

That’s what I’d been saying. How could you expect casting when they just barely hired a director. That’s a lot of roles to audition and work out deals with, it didn’t seem feasible. And unnecessary considering when the movie comes out.

And yeah I can’t imagine we’ll see the X-men until after Secret Wars so we would really start hearing anything concrete for a while.

As well that should be the case.

The XMen have been done and redone for nearly the last 20 years.
That’s only one generation removed from the early 2000 XMen.

The public needs a buffer between those XMen including the latest bunch and the new XMen so there I are no longer any cries for Stewart, McCellen, Jackman or Fassbender.

The new XMen should be and entirely new cast, comic book faithful and painstakingly accurate.

With the Disney acquisition of Fox I started writing an article about how long Disney should wait to reintroduce the XMen. I haven’t finished it but the bottom line was 11 years minimum if memory serves.

That would allow Phase 4 to be done, Phase 5 and 6 to happen and maybe they can begin to show up by Phase 7 or 8.
And if they do show up in Phase 7 Wolverine shouldn’t even appear until late Phase 8 or Phase 9.

Wolverine took a very long time to appear in the comics and they should follow suit in the MCU.

TheRationalNerd - 9/11/2022, 1:54 AM
@TyrantBossMedia - Wolverine for late Phase 8? I don't think I could personally wait that long. How would they explain his dueling with the Hulk? You could introduce him post secret wars. Perhaps Alpha Flight first?
TyrantBossMedia
TyrantBossMedia - 9/11/2022, 1:57 AM
@TheRationalNerd - They could always have him fight the Hulk since Hilk is a CGI character and doesn’t have to age necessarily,

While I think Marvel should wait until 8 or 9 for Wolverine I don’t think they will but I would love a development of the XMen without him.

@TyrantBossMedia - I see what you're coming from and I've been stating the same for a long time.

But with the variants idea things have changed - there are many ways they can make it work sooner (see spider-man who had 2 reboots in less than 10 years).

Pretty much following the Daredevil formula: bring back whoever is still fit and recast the rest.

bkmeijer1 - 9/11/2022, 5:05 AM
@TheRationalNerd - Wolverine is an old dude, so I guess he could've been there at earlier points in the timeline.

I especially think it would be interesting to see him get blipped, only for his regenaration putting him together again, and then get blipped again and again for five years. I want a pissed-off Wolverine, and that probably pisses him off real bad.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - we've only really lost potential interactions with Cap and Iron Man, and even in Cap's case at least Sam has taken over the mantle.

Don't really care to see Natasha with the X-Men.

Besides them we've still got everyone else left (Thor, Hulk, Spidey, DD, etc to name a few), + the F4 who will also be fresh to the MCU. Plenty of worthwhile interactions left, so long as they don't leave it for 10-15 more years.

@VictorAlonzo - Didn’t occur to me how disappointing this all is until I read your comment. I was so hyped for all the Phase 4 announcements. I was ready for Marvel to get weird with it and have fun. While I legitimately have liked most of Phase 4, I’m not that hyped about what’s coming for a couple years out and I’m feeling a little let down about what we’ve had.
