X-MEN '97 Head Writer Departs Twitter Following Backlash Over Sunspot "Whitewashing" Casting X-MEN '97 Head Writer Departs Twitter Following Backlash Over Sunspot "Whitewashing" Casting

After the X-Men '97 cast was revealed, many fans were quick to express disappointment about the actor chosen to play Sunspot. Now, that's prompted Head Writer Beau DeMay to completely leave Twitter...

Despite doing a commendable job of keeping fans updated about X-Men '97's status on social media, Toonado.com reveals that Head Writer Beau DeMayo has decided to leave the platform following a tense few days.

Earlier this week, we learned that Brazilian actor Gui Agustini will lend his voice to Roberto da Costa/Sunspot in the X-Men: The Animated Series follow-up. However, the character has long been the subject of whitewashing claims, first in The New Mutants live-action movie and now in X-Men '97

Sunspot, who is typically darker-skinned on the page, being portrayed by Agustini didn't sit well with some, while others feel his skin tone in the show itself is too light for an Afro-Brazilian.

Initially, DeMayo responded by saying, "I will not indulge fans believing that they are entitled to be the arbiter of someone else’s identity, and whether or not they are 'this' or 'that' enough...At the proper time, there’ll be plenty of insights into what decisions we made and why. When Marvel gives me the go, I will be very frank and transparent."

That did little to calm things down, hence why the writer eventually decided to take a break from social media.

"I value fan’s opinions but the sheer amount of vitriol in the last 24-hours is truly taxing, and actually risks working against what you’re trying to do as it’s now closed off an access point because I have to protect myself," he stated before detailing some of the attacks he's endured in recent days (including being labelled a "race traitor").

You can read both his statements in their entirety in the Tweets below, but this feels like another blow to a series that's seemingly fallen by the wayside since it was first announced.

Despite merchandise and various leaks finding their way online, Marvel Studios hasn't started promoting X-Men '97, leaving DeMayo to single-handedly debunk some of those and share what little he can with fans. Now, that's led to a pretty unpleasant situation which the studio is currently staying silent about.

We'll keep you updated as and when we learn more.

It’s a voice role, it’s not that deep.

@PlusUltra - For Americans it is.

Everything with them has to be about race, and they'll try and make anything into a race discussion.

Coke vs Pepsi, McDonald's vs Burger King, bar soap vs liquid soap, up vs down.

@DarthAlgar - I visited the US a couple of times, and let me tell you, they're batshit crazy over there. Everything with them is political and worth a fight.

@philinterrupted - For a country that has freedom of speech at the very top of their constitution, more and more people over there seem to have a difficult time accepting other people's opinions. I could be wrong, because I haven't lived there that long, but it seems like the smallest disagreement is enough to cost you everything, be it job, reputations, friends, etc...
philinterrupted
philinterrupted - 6/1/2023, 3:25 PM
@Th3Batman - that’s true. But, freedom of speech is really only related whether or not the government can silence you. That hasn’t happened.
With social media people have drifted further apart and don’t take the time to actually listen to differing point of views because it’s so easy to just find someone who agrees with you. It’s disgusting.

@DarthAlgar - We are literally at the point where people have trending arguments on social media about Mayonaise being racist because people who enjoy it must be afraid of more "ethnic sauces". Yes, that was an actual term people used unironically. "Ethnic sauces". This is where we are as a society.

@PlusUltra - You know what drives me crazy about this?

Sunspot is Brazilian. They got a Brazilian voice actor to play him. But people are mad that the Brazilian voice actor playing a Brazilian character is too light skinned? On an animated show where you don't even see the voice actor?

What the hell has the world come to?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/1/2023, 4:42 PM
@Th3Batman - You.....pretty much hit the nail on the head.

But at the same time, @philinterrupted is correct. It is just the loud ones. Most people are normal. The problem is everyone panders to the loud ones, and the majority suffers because of it.

Another big problem is that people don't realize what freedom speech actually means. It doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequence. It just means you can't be arrested for the words you say. Unless you are breaking another crime in the process, like Disorderly Conduct or Disturbing the Peace. For example, you can't walk into a grocery store and start screaming obscenities.

But you're right. People have no tolerance for the opinions of others any more. Everyone claims they are supporters of freedom of speech, yet the second someone says something they don't agree with about certain topics they want those people punished and silenced.

@Drace24 - WTF? Just because I like mayonnaise doesn't mean I don't like ethnic sauces also.

Sorry, I'm not going to put chitpotle sauce on my turkey sandwich. I'll use mayo for that. But I'll Damm sure put some Chipotle on some tacos.
Drace24
Drace24 - 6/1/2023, 4:56 PM
@CorndogBurglar - You are correct that that's what freedom of speech is in a legal sense, but it's also a social concept that goes far beyond the laws that try to capture it. It absolutely means that a free democratic society must be build in such a way that every opinion can be expressed freely and noone has to fear one another. No, that doesn't mean that people have to like that opinion or give it a stage. But neither does it mean that we should solve our differences by shouting each other down or aim to punish someone for expressing an unpopular opinion.

And no, that is not a exoneration of people like Elon Musk who use their own definition of Free Speech as a very one-sided shield. But the same goes for people who scream "accountability" as an excuse to do to people whatever they want while themselfs hiding behind an anime-avatar to never be held accountable themselfs.

@DarthAlgar - I was in the Marines for almost 27 years.I've been all over the world and stayed in a number of places for a long time and I can tell you first hand that no one cares more about the color of skin more than someone from the U.S. that includes white, black, brown etc...95% of an Americans self worth is wrapped up in skin color.

It's not a white or black or brown thing...is an American thing...place is filled with racist and most are not smart enough to know that they are being played by politicians.

@DarthAlgar @Th3Batman - as an American, I have to say this is unfortunately true for the most part. I live in Kentucky, and work a blue collar job. I hear this kind of shit all day, no matter what the topic is. We’re not all like this, but it’s pretty widespread. I’m lucky to live in a medium size city, you go out much further and it’s just rednecks

dracula
dracula - 6/1/2023, 4:50 PM
@Drace24 - it is ridiculous but really if people are going to go this crazy over race even in voice acting, whatever. But then going as far as to complain about the tint of skin tone even when the race is correct is ridiculous.

People are basically discriminating against their own race
