While the early Fast & Furious movies certainly had their fans, it wasn't until the fifth instalment that street racing was put to one side in favour of explosive action. Since then, critics have really embraced the franchise, and while it's not a series associated with the strongest storytelling, it is a lot of fun, and there's plenty of excitement surrounding Hobbs & Shaw for that reason.

As the franchise's first spinoff, the movie pairs up the popular characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for what looks like an epic battle between them and Idris Elba's "black Superman." 

Now, the reviews are in and Hobbs & Shaw currently boasts an impressive 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 81 reviews. According to the Critics Consensus, "Hobbs & Shaw doesn't rev as high as the franchise's best installments, but gets decent mileage out of its well-matched stars and over-the-top action sequences."

That's a good start for the movie, and while The Lion King recently passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, it's thought that Hobbs & Shaw will indeed tale the #1 spot this weekend.

@Alex35 - Okay, this seems to have gone over everyone's head. I'm late, but I think this should be clear. There was no need to refer to him as that in this article other than to stir things up. That's my point.

Idris Elba's character has a name in the series, yet I don't know what it is, because article writers like this keep looking to start a fire to generate comments. That's all.

@MotherGooseUPus - I hope this movie flops domestically. Rock has been making terrible films and his age is really starting to show. He needs to pick better films before he gets too old.

Sadly enough china will make up any loss in USA too.

@R888 - It's all about expectation. H&S doesn't hide the fact that its a stupid fun action movie so if it meets their expectations and critics don't have a terrible time its going to get mostly positive reviews.

I love Godzilla but it just didn't meet most people's expectation (an argument for another day).

RT is flawed so take it with a grain of salt as films with passing grades 6/10 or C- scores can get a "rotten rating" too which is dumb imo.

Saw it last night, and was honestly impressed. Talk about "dumb fun", cause that's what I had watching it. Johnson and Stathem have a great "frenemy" thing throughout the film. Kirby is not just gorgeous, but can actually act.

There's one surprise this film has halfway in that really got me, and it was great.

I've never seen any of the previous F&F films, but if they make a Hobbs & Shaw sequel...

Fast 5 was the most organic and best story the rest will about $$$$$$$ ...

Doesn't surprise me really. Ever since the Rock came aboard this franchise, the scores went from rotten to fresh (and sometimes even certified)
