While the early
Fast & Furious movies certainly had their fans, it wasn't until the fifth instalment that street racing was put to one side in favour of explosive action. Since then, critics have really embraced the franchise, and while it's not a series associated with the strongest storytelling, it is a lot of fun, and there's plenty of excitement surrounding
Hobbs & Shaw for that reason.
As the franchise's first spinoff, the movie pairs up the popular characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham for what looks like an epic battle between them and Idris Elba's "black Superman."
Now, the reviews are in and
Hobbs & Shaw currently boasts an impressive 72% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 81 reviews. According to the Critics Consensus,
"Hobbs & Shaw doesn't rev as high as the franchise's best installments, but gets decent mileage out of its well-matched stars and over-the-top action sequences."
That's a good start for the movie, and while
The Lion King recently passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, it's thought that
Hobbs & Shaw will indeed tale the #1 spot this weekend.
