NO TIME TO DIE Director Reveals That He Considered Having Most Of The Movie Take Place In James Bond's Head

No Time to Die director Cary Fukunaga reveals that when he originally pitched his James Bond movie, a huge chunk of it was going to take place inside the head of 007...wait, what? Read on for details...

No Time to Die was originally set to be released this month, but it was ultimately among the first big budget blockbusters to be postponed as a result of COVID-19. As a result, we don't really know all that much about what to expect from Daniel Craig's final appearance as James Bond, but director Cary Fukunaga admitted to having some pretty wild ideas during a recent interview.

While this was an idea the people in charge presumably said no to, the filmmaker admitted that he considered having at least two thirds of James Bond 25 take place within the mind of 007.

"I had an idea that this movie could all be taking place inside the villain’s lair from the last film," Fukunaga started. "There’s this scene where a needle goes into James Bond’s head, which is supposed to make him forget everything, and then he miraculously escapes by a watch bomb."

"And then he and Léa blow up the place, and go on to save the day," he continued. "I was like, 'What if everything up until the end of act two is all inside his head?'"

Unfortunately, he doesn't elaborate on what would have happened next, but this definitely sounds like an unconventional approach to a Bond movie. Bear in mind that Danny Boyle walked away from the project because some of his ideas were too out there for the franchise's producers, so we're not entirely sure how Fukanaga managed to get hired after a crazy pitch like that.

What are your thoughts on this unexpected take on 007?

Anything that goes back to Spectre would be annoying. Really disappointing film, they should move on to the next.

I doubt it’ll reach Casino Royale or skyfall status but pleeease at the very least be satisfying for the most part

That entire lair set piece felt so out of place in the world they established in the Craig Bond era, and Bond's escape was just cartoonish. This just feels like Fukunaga trying to retroactively make it seem less idiotic, but it feels more like one of those lame fan theories.
Either way, Fukunaga's gonna shoot the shit out of this. Hope we get a oner like the one he directed in True Detective

@TheJustinHammer - He escapes just before his mind is wiped, with an impossible plan consisting of tiny explosives hidden in his watch. Then he goes full god mode and just starts mowing down everyone without a sweat, even though he was just being tortured beforehand. Also the way the entire lair blew up so spectacularly because Bond shot a gas tank felt like some tom and jerry shit

@tmp3 - Agreed. That whole movie felt like it was made for Roger Moore or Connery. I get it wanted to be a throwback, but Craig isn't a throwback Bond. He was his own thing

@CaptainJCipher - Yeah, you're right. It was too coincidental. And I thought it was weird they didn't have any repercussions with the head needle. It happened, and then went away

Bond escaping without any injuries or whatever from that head drilling made no sense as it was supposed to leave him paralyzed or something like that. I don't remember the specifics, but I remember it makes no sense. So I can see why Fukunaga came up with this idea

@MalseMarcel - Does almost anything from James Bond movies outside of Casino Royale actually make sense? I love them but they aren’t exactly supposed to be realistic

I clicked on this article expecting to have to defend the "It was all a dream trope" but if it would have went back to Spectre then no, [frick] that. I didn't even finish Spectre. It was boring and I hadn't heard any good things about it.

Ok, this is the sort of behind the scenes stuff you want to get AFTER you’ve seen the movie, not before.

On that "It was all a dream trope" though. Wizard of Oz. There can still be a story, an arc. The Wizard of Oz isn't made worse because it doesn't actually happen. I've had some really affecting dreams in real life that had a movie-like effect on me. It's actually kind of a realistic thing.

"It wasn't real!" Well, guess what? None of it is, it's all fiction. If it's more a standalone thing, like The Wizard of Oz, then it's fine. The problem comes when it's used badly in the midst of a series because it feels like wasted time (even if the character is affected by what goes on during the dream).

Probably pitched it as the James Bond equivalent of Inception. Glad it doesn't seem to be going in that direction but it's definitely a creative approach.

The dream trope works if it’s not used as the “resolution” to the story. Or perhaps if it’s not used in that way, then it’s not a “dream trope.” 🤷🏻‍♂️
