THE DARK KNIGHT Director Christopher Nolan Wanted To Direct JAMES BOND Movie After TENET - But Was Turned Down

In what has to be one of the biggest Hollywood fumbles in recent memory, it's been revealed that James Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli declined Christopher Nolan's offer to helm a 007 movie...

We recently learned that Amazon has managed to strike a $1 billion deal with James Bond franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson to gain full creative control over 007.

The expectation now is that a slew of spin-offs and TV shows will soon accompany the main film series. The news has either excited people eager to see more Bond on their screens or recoiling in horror at the prospect of the iconic Sir Ian Fleming creation becoming just another IP.

Variety (via ActioNewz.com) has shared an interesting piece on the deal, revealing some of the wranglings that led to a deal no one ever expected to be made.

Sources share the points of view of both Amazon and Broccoli, though one says she was "too cautious and exerted outsize control - to the detriment of Bond." For example, "Christopher Nolan expressed interest in directing a Bond movie following the release of 'Tenet.' But Broccoli made clear that no director would have final cut while Bond was under her purview."

With it made clear he wouldn't have final cut, Nolan walked away and made Oppenheimer instead. That won the Oscar for "Best Picture" and grossed nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office. Now, The Dark Knight helmer has moved on to The Odyssey and is unlikely to ever make his Bond dream a reality.

It's said that, while the deal still needs to be finalised, a new James Bond movie is a priority for Amazon. However, "the studio will look first to attach a producer in the vein of David Heyman, who shepherded the 'Harry Potter' and 'Fantastic Beasts' films with a cohesive vision."

Agencies have already started pitching potential writers, directors, and leading men, though it could be a while before we hear anything definitive as regulators will need to give the deal the green light.

"If you own a Ferrari but don’t control where or if it goes, it’s frustrating," former Amazon Studios chief Roy Price told the site. "The Broccolis have provided the best example in Hollywood history of managing a character. But in today’s complex landscape, it makes sense for Amazon to get in the driver’s seat and control their own destiny."

However, others warn against the temptation to stretch the secret agent too thin.

"There’s something so special and unique about Bond, and you can’t just strip him of the things that make him so debonair and cram five projects into production right now and not totally destroy everything about the property," explains Peter Newman, head of the MBA/MFA graduate dual degree program at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. "And if you make Bond more politically correct, you’re going to have a lot of pushback."

As always, stay tuned for updates on 007's future as we have them.

Turned down probably the only modern director who's name alone sells movie tickets?

Thats as big of a mistake as when they turned down Steven Spielberg (Which is why he made Indiana jones)

Maybe take his ideas to the Mission Impossible franchise instead then or make that rumored Prisoner movie

@dracula - Spielberg wanted to do a bond movie??

@THEKENDOMAN - yes, which is why he made Indiana Jones

he was turned down for Bond twice

@dracula - Damn. We learn something new every day.

Let me imagine Spielberg doing a Bond movie. 🤔

That's interesting. Too bad

@THEKENDOMAN - and if you didnt know

@dracula - it’s like WB turning down Chris McQuire for a Superman.

@Arthorious - not sure id put them in the same ball park

Outside of Mission Impossible his work as director didnt really bring in the box office and if we include his writer work seems like a mixed bag (including Tom’s Mummy movie)

@dracula - Well then we won out if that’s why he made Raiders of the lost Ark. James Bond doesn’t seem right for him in a way although he could make any property fantastic I am sure. I think we are better off with Indiana Jones by Spielberg than with James Bond by Spielberg.

@dracula - I knew he planned for the original Star Wars to be in the vein of Flash Gordon, but I don’t think I knew that he had tried to do Flash Gordon himself. When I was a kid, one of the local stations used to run the flash Gordon and cereals on Saturday mornings and I loved them. I was pretty young then and when Star Wars came around, I was a little bit older and ready for an upgrade. I remember buying Marvel comic Star Wars number one before the movie had come out. The comic did not capture the magic on the screen at all.

@dracula - Fair point and makes sense. Perhaps I'm a bit bias, but I think WB should've given him a chance with a Superman film. but this was the same WB who wanted Keaton to be the definitive Batman for a while and have a new universe without Superman.

This is widely known that Nolan wants to do bond and Star Wars. But he wants Final Cut and most of the control. Franchise producers don’t usually go for this … unless the franchise is in the toilet (which Batman was).

Leonardo DiCaprio reuniting with Nolan to play a 007 villain. That would have been a dream.

Nah, mate.

Leo will be a good villain under Nolan but not Bond.

Well, maybe he can have another crack at it since Amazon has got creative control.

But honestly, we may see the death of Bond.

Because they are going to milk that franchise to death.

TV shows, cartoons, gay bond series, trans bond series, female bond series, animation, cartoons, games, drinks.

Yep, they are going to milk that mother[frick]er.

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

For [frick]s sake

Guess there is 1 producer who won't give Nolan whatever he wants.

Well 99.9% of hollywood would

He'd do a fantastic Bond film, but come on he should have known he would never get Final Cut privileges for this franchise. It's like walking into Marvel looking to make a Wolverine movie and expecting Feige to give you full control from beginning to end, it's just not happening.

TheVisionary25 - 2/26/2025, 6:01 PM
@1stDalek - I wonder what the situation was with the Dark Knight films?

I doubt he had Final Cut in Begins but maybe The Dark Knight , definitely TDKR I think.
1stDalek
1stDalek - 2/26/2025, 6:14 PM
@TheVisionary25 - As Nolan's first big film I doubt he felt confident in demanding for it since it's a pretty big ask for tentpole films. 2003 Nolan isn't the same as 2020 Nolan walking into negotiations.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/26/2025, 6:21 PM

1stDalek
1stDalek - 2/26/2025, 6:49 PM
@TheVisionary25 - I have little doubt he had final cut from TDK onward, he's a great editor and I'm sure he more than proved himself with Begins and The Prestige.

@1stDalek - yeah

TheJok3r

@1stDalek - I think he'd get that if this hypothetical Wolverine movie was an isolated project set outside the mCU.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 2/26/2025, 5:44 PM
Honestly , not too surprised if that’s the case since the Broccoli’s had always been very protective of the property and always strayed away from hiring big name directors aside from oerhaps Sam Mendes who was apparently willing to work with them on the final cut of his films.

It would be nice to see a Nolan Bond film but I feel like I have already seen it to an extent in his works such as Inception , Tenet or his Batman trilogy (aswell as Skyfall , Spectre & NTTD feeling very Nolan-esque) so that desire to see it for me just isn’t there anymore.

Anyway if Amazon are looking for a producer in the vein of David Heyman then why not just ask him first…

He still produces both tv & film and has had recent success with the likes of Barbie and Wonka.

While I still hate the idea of Amazon being in control of Bond; I'd definitely understand their frustration with Broccoli's cautious nature, especially if it costs them the chance of a James Bond movie directed by Christopher [frick]ing Nolan lmao.

now would be the perfect time for him to do it

complete fresh start (first time in the franchise history)

Amazon has control now

When he is done with the Odyssey, call him up

Look at the absolute horror Amazon has made of the Rings of Power and The Wheel of time. They have taken the 2 greatest fantasy book series' ever written and turned both into utter garbage.

They will destroy James Bond in the same way that Kennedy has destroyed Star Wars.

Hollywood these days is where the very best of literature, entertainment, human virtue, and sanity go to die.
