Thirty four years after Top Gun took the world by storm, Maverick (Tom Cruise) is back, and he's never looked better.

Paramount Pictures has debuted an awesome new trailer for Joseph Kosinski's highly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, which will see Cruise reprise arguably his most iconic role to date, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and thrust him in an all-new adventure that will push him further than he's ever been pushed before.

Along with the trailer, comes new photos (which you can view below) and the official synopsis, which reads:

"After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

I used to watch the original a lot back in the day during my phase where I was into fighter planes and stuff.
we don't see many dogfights in movies nowadays, and it looks fairly practical in execution, or it's just very good CG. thou knowing Tom Cruise his crazy ass probably got into that plane for real.

Miles Teller playing Goose's son makes a lot of sense, and I'm not saying that because of the moustache. Rest looks great too

I've never seen Top Gun, but I did see the end of Hot Shots on a scrambled HBO channel as a kid and thought it was Top Gun.

“The whole concept of dogfighting is so misunderstood and taken out of context," Berke said in an interview with Business Insider. "We need to do a better job teaching the public how to assess a jet's capability in warfare."

"There is some idea that when we talk about dogfighting it's one airplane's ability to get another airplane's 6 and shoot it with a gun ... That hasn't happened with American planes in maybe 40 years," Berke said.

According to the article, they do still do dogfighting training sessions, however. It’ll be interesting to see how much of this sequel is based in reality.

@Chewtoy - They will always have a gun and train dog fighting. At least until drones fully take over, if ever.

The last time the US built a fighter jet with no machine gun was in Vietnam with the F4 Phantom. Pilots hated it because they ended up needing it. Also, heat seaking missiles were just becoming a thing back then, so pilots were having tons of issues with only missiles. The guidance systems weren't working and sometimes missiles would just release and fall to the ground or not launch at all. So they were essentially in Fighter jets with no weapons.

The US eventually added an under cockpit cannon, but the plane wasn't designed for the added weight at the front, and it made it very hard to fly and less aerodynamic.

So they learned their lesson. They would rather their pilots be trained and prepared for "unlikely" situations than not be prepared at all and need it.

People can also talk about how advanced the F-22 is now, but the truth is that they still fly more F-18's and F-15's than any other fighters.

Like Dunkirk, I'll watch this just for the spectacle alone. You can instantly tell that they shot all of this for real. It radiates authenticity.

The original Top Gun is easily a top 3 favorite homoerotic smut film.

Really hope this lives up to it.
