ONE PUNCH MAN Live-Action Adaptation From VENOM Writers In The Works At Sony Pictures

Some good news for anime fans here, as Venom co-writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner have reportedly been hired to pen the script for a live-action One Punch Man adaptation for Sony Pictures...

A live-action adaptation of ONE's satirical anime series One Punch Man is in development at Sony Pictures, with Venom and Jumanji: The Next Level writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner on board to pen the script. Avi and Ari Arad will produce.

The property started out as a web comic back in 2009 before surging in popularity as an Eisner Award-nominated manga in 2012. It was then adapted as an acclaimed anime series, so a live-action take was always going to be the next logical step.

The story follows an aspiring superhero named Saitama who amasses so much power that he becomes invincible. Able to defeat any opponent with a single punch (hence the name), he eventually becomes bored and seeks out more and more powerful foes.

Variety reports that Sony is said to be "very high on the property given its popularity and the possibility of adding another franchise to the pipeline."

What do you guys make of this news? Any One Punch Man fans out there? If you're unfamiliar with the series and want a better idea of what to expect, check out a trailer for the anime below.

One Punch Man is one of those things I don't think would work in live action.

@LordWaldo - It’s not like I won’t see it but honestly of all the anime I would like to see get the big screen live action treatment One Punch Man is probably 20th in line.

I see One Punch Man is getting a live action movie and I'm excited. But then I see from the people who made Venom and all my excitement has disappeared.

No thank you. What’s great about OPM is that it’s not only a great action anime but at its core it making fun of anime. The grandiose inner monologues, the distorted time and slowmo in fights, the over the top reactions, the impossible camera angles and moves. What makes it good is that it’s anime to the millionth degree and I just don’t see how that could possibly be improved or even captured in live action. I generally like live action anime adaptations but this just doesn’t seem right to me.

@TheJustinHammer - Nah if you watch the first season it very clearly making fun of anime tropes even so much so that they went the opposite route of having the main character have no hair because anime/manga protagonists are known for having “protagonist hair” a lot of that show/manga is subverting and in some cases amplifying those tropes. Like the huge buildup of Mumen Rider in season one being the standard Rock Lee style character who has no natural talent but uses hard work and belief in him self to conquer obstacles. In almost every other anime they either overcome their obstacle or inspire friends to band together but in OPM he literally just gets destroyed each time. They even play it as a comedic beat the first time it’s pretty obvious they do that

@TheJustinHammer - Nah it’s anime stuff with a superhero filter

@TheJustinHammer - I mean don’t get me wrong it’s ALSO a superhero parody but I mean cmon even the majority of he second season was devoted to a DBZ Yu Yu Hakusho style tournament arc it’s pretty overt

@CaptainJCipher - it’s definitely also a paradox of superheroes but to me (and maybe it’s because I watch a decent amount of anime) I think it’s more an anime making fun of anime that’s also has superhero tropes and jokes just because that happens to be the main subject matter.

Some anime should STAY ANIME. Leave my boy Saitama alone

@CaptainJCipher - I think there’s a good amount of anime that can work in live action. GITS for example can still work and it’s not one of those thats completely untouchable (like Bebop). But I don’t trust Hollywood writers to nail it and even if it can work theoretically doesn’t mean they should do it.

Whatever they cook up, I can’t see it capturing that offbeat, strangeness the anime offers whatsoever. I. The case of OPM, it’s one of those off kilter anime that works best as an anime only. There’s something about the conditions of anime applied to the “making fun of superherodom” that’s special. Worst fear is this is Deadpool but he can fly.

@CaptainJCipher - Taika and Edgar you can at least trust to do an actual acceptable job with something like this.

Anime is such a unique medium/genre. Especially with something like OPM or JoJo. Those quirky ones are something else. Like you said, the Venom writers doing this is like a guaranteed dumpster fire. You just want something as good as OPM to at least get a valiant effort with real talent behind it.

@CaptainJCipher - the fights would really take the deftest most imaginative hand to capture.

You really would need a Taika, Edgar, or even The Russos (IW and Edngame had some anime looking battles) to get it.

Saitama's boredom is a really important aspect of who he is and I'm afraid they will be apprehensive about tackling it.

"No one wants to see a bored guy beat people up" kind of thing.

@BlackBeltJones - there live action movies of cute honey, prince of tennis, full metal alchemist, death note, gundam, gto great teacher onizuka ( anime series is better) , 3 different versions of live action of dragonball, lupin, blood vampire, ouruon school club, and many more anime that is comedy turned into live action in Japan Hollywood

@BlackBeltJones - I think Deadpool that can fly would be a great outcome for the tone. That said, my greatest hope for the tone would be Scott Pilgram, with Edgar Wright also directing.

Garbage studio. Just garbage

How do you get so many gold mines and consistently assign the worst possible miners to do the mining for you?

Eh, why not, OPM is probably one of the easiest property to adapt, the only problem would be potraying its over the top action.
