Jonathan Majors has rapidly become one of Hollywood's most in-demand talents, and his role as Kang in the Marvel Cinematic Universe promises to give the actor ample opportunities to show just what he's capable of. After all, it's not every day someone is given the chance to play countless versions of the same character!
However, the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania star has now revealed that he came close to walking out of the first meeting he ever had with Marvel Studios.
"Listen, I hope this doesn't bite me in the ass," he told Vanity Fair, "but I walked out of my Marvel general [meeting]."
The meeting was supposed to take place not too long after Majors graduated from the Yale School of Drama in 2016, but as he sat there waiting, the actor decided he'd had enough!
"I grew up in a very particular way and I don't want to waste nobody's time. So I got in there and they're just busy," the Loki star recalls. "And I was like, 'I'm supposed to be here, right?' It got long and I went, 'I'm just going to go. It's cool. I'll just go.' And I got to the door, but then they said [casting director] Sarah Finn was going to come."
"We got in the room and we chatted. We were having this great conversation. I think it was three years later that we had the Kang chat," Majors says. "And there's no trepidation now, especially because of who Kang is. When I said yes, we got the whole picture, and what is being laid out is cohesive."
It would be another few years before he heard from Marvel Studios about playing Kang, but we'd say it's probably for the best that the initial meeting took place.
There's every chance Majors would have remained on Marvel's radar, of course, but his conversation with Finn is likely what kept him in the back of her mind when it came time to find the MCU's new big bad. Despite the Ant-Man threequel's so-so reviews, Majors' take on Kang is receiving widespread acclaim, and that definitely bodes well for the Multiverse Saga.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania arrives in theaters later this evening!
