Do we really need ANT-MAN?

Is the movie Ant-Man is pointless? Did Marvel did so many changes that it's just not Ant-Man anymore? do you care? Come and tell us what do you think...

Ant-Man is coming next year. But do we really need Ant-Man?

I like Edgar Wright’s movies, and like many others I’m disappointed that he will no longer direct Ant-Man, especially because he was working on this project for so long.  But I still hope the movie will be good, but I have a really bad vibe about this movie. I’m not saying it will be a terrible movie, after all we are talking here about Marvel, and even they worst movies are fun (Iron Man 2&3).

But I have a feeling that with all the changes, the Ant-Man movie feels a little pointless.

I’m not really a big Ant-Man fan, never read the comics, and I don’t like ants in general. But I feel like Marvel is doing something wrong with the character. What makes superheroes great isn’t there powers, it’s their personalities and stories. Spider-Man could have been Rat-Man, and still be a great character, because what makes people relate to him is his story.

For all I know about Ant-Man AKA Hank Pym is very interesting. His relationship with his wife, Wasp (Janet van Dyne), his backstory, Ultron and all the other things. And yet, Marvel decided that instead of Pym creating Ultron, it will be Iron Man. I have no problem with this, I thinks it’s a great idea and makes sense for the cinematic universe. But they do take a key component of what makes Pym an interesting hero.

But then they remove Wasp, and replace her with “Hope Van Dyne”, which is just stupid, if you ask me. And it doesn’t stop there; they make Pym an old man, and put Scott Lang as the main hero of the movie. I don’t know much about Lang, so I can’t say anything about him. But with all of these changes, isn’t the things that make Ant-Man are gone?

Obviously the general public does not know anything about Ant-Man, and most people don’t really care if it’s Pym or Lang, and I know that Marvel have their direction and plans, so I trust them on that.

Plus, it is obvious that in light of the fact that Robert Downey, Jr. isn’t going to be Iron Man forever, Marvel is looking for the next big charismatic star, we see it with Chris Pratt, and in Ant-Man we will see it with Paul Rudd.

In the end of the day, I still think that Ant-Man will be a fan movie, but I just feel like Marvel just changed the character of Ant-Man so much, that it makes me ask: what is the point and do we really need this new Ant-Man?

Anyway, what do you think? Do you agree that with so many changes it’s pointless to do Ant-Man, or do you think it’s ok?

did they really change the character of hank pym? from the sounds of it No.
everything is the same except the fact that pym had his hay day during the 60's.

he still marries Janet van dyne
he still was smart and created the ant man suit
hes not overly fond of being a superhero
he may have gone mental once and had become yellow jacket, whos suit is then stolen by coreys character.

too me its really close to source material. with some changes that im fine with now. yes i would have preferred young pym in present day, but sht happens. at least the character of pym has not changed no matter what decade they are portraying him in.

imagine this during the 60's- 70's after the death of Edwin Jarvis, pym as a gesture to good friend Howard Stark creates a blueprint AI programme that he calls project Ultron using his own brain patterns, as a way to keep the memory of Jarvis alive. Latter Tony Stark Develops it even further into JARVIS who then is corrupted and using the name that was originally designated to it, calls himself Ultron.

Pretty sure I'm the only person that's happy that Edgar Wright is gone.

But, I never gave a shit about this movie when he was involved, other than the castings of Evangeline Lily and Michael Douglas. Other than that, there's not much draw to the film for me.

@Ace101

JARVIS isn't becoming Ultron, JARVIS is becoming Vision. Paul Bettany confirmed it at SDCC.

I honestly don't see any changes whatsoever. They just made his days as a hero in the 60s and technically Ant-Man was a hero in the 60s. Scott Lang was his predecessor. Hope Pym/Van Dyne is his daughter. And Janet is most likely going to be his wife/ ex-wife who was Wasp with him in the 60s. I bet he made the early design for Ultron too. They showed in Cap 2 that A.I.'s were existent in the 40s so he could've made at least the designs for Ultron. Tony stumbles on them and bam! He updates them and creates Ultron. Without Hank Ultron wouldn't have existed.

And nothing Marvel does is pointless. Everything they do builds up to something else in their universe, whether we know it or not.

This movie will be the first financial failure for Marvel.

I hate saying that, but i think its true.

The General Audience already hear the name Ant-Man and make fun of it, saying things like, "Wow, they're really starting to stretch with these superheroes aren't they?"

This is what everyone i have talked to says that isn't a comic fan. Or at least something very similar.

I hope I'm wrong, but this movie will have to have the best trailer of all time to winbover the General Audience, and without them, no CBM will succeed, as much as us comic fans hate to admit it.

We need an Ant Man movie but starring Hank and Janet,
And having them be part of the current Avengers.

I think Ant-Man will be a prominent figure in the MCU. I think he's needed.

I think Pym and Janet are going to show up on the Agent Carter show

Edwin Jarvis is already set to make an appearance, so Howard Stark should show, and the evolution of all these characters could easily lead directly into the Ant-Man and AOU movies....

We don't "need" the movie, but not really knowing too much about the character apart from what I have seen in the Earths mightiest heroes (and that was only Hank in season 1) I still think Antman could bring an interesting dynamic to the MCU.

It would be interesting to see how he interacts with the avengers, I'm not pumped to see it, but I would need to see some footage first really.

Marvel know best (most of the time), and they obviously have an idea of the bigger picture and the direction they want to go in so I trust them with bringing this out.

So lets see what they can do.

I do think Ant-Man is needed in the MCU. We need more science, because i love the science aspect with in comic book films and i want to see more of that. I honestly don't mind the change's that are happening with the film, sure there questionable decisions but the thing is you have to ask yourself, will the decisions that the studio, writer's and the director has made will it all pay off or will it all come crashing down.

I'm really hoping that Ant-Man will succeed because i do like Hank Pym and Scott Lang. I especially loved Hank Pym when he was the leader of "The Mighty Avengers".

Everyone saying this will be the first Marvel flop probably were saying the same thing about GOTG. I believe in this movie.

I don't think we need Scott Lang, he brings nothing to the table. All he will be able to do is shrink and communicate with ants. Both of which he has no clue as to how it works or how to use them without Hank. There will be no Giant Man, no Goliath, no Yellowjacket. Each Hank Pym persona brings with it a plethora of stories and ideas. That is all gone with their Hank Pym casting. Hank Pym as a character allows Marvel to explore so many different things. He could have bridged the gap between science and magic, allowing for Doctor Strange, Black Panther, explaining the infinity stones and space science. Not only could Hank shrink small enough to slip into different dimensions he could grow so large he could communicate with celestials. He is constantly inventing gadgets and weapons. He was the Scientist Supreme. With Lang we are stuck with a dumb, criminal, dead-beat father who uses somebody else's inventions to do things half as well as the inventor himself could. This whole movie is a [frick]ing JOKE. I only wish Marvel kills off Scott Lang and Hank Pym and Hope in this film and has a young Hank and Janet time travel to the future to join the Avengers. But even then it would be a [frick]ing waste of a first film, a waste of Yellowjacket, Hank's best persona. A lot of the changes Marvel has made in their films does not bother me, but after all I have heard about this film, I have no faith at all.

This film is going to make more money than you all think. It will probably be better than we think. People liked Thor TDW for some reason and it made mone and it's a really bad movie. Ant Man will be fine. It will be more accurate than we think. It will be good.

I haven't read the script so I can't make the claims SOME are making. I also don't happen to believe Stan Lee's writing canon isn't without criticism, either. Some will have to wait and see.

There IS a possibility that those who have adapted the 616 have made it dramatically BETTER than the original story. Kenneth Johnson's television 'Hulk' origin story FAR surpasses Stan Lee's.

Much as I hate making such a blanket statement, I'm going to do it anyway.

No one cares about Ant-Man. Think about that statement.
Not even a full one percent of movie-goers have read GotG, and they still go see it anyway, despite not knowing ANYTHING about the characters, apart from what the trailers told them. I know I haven't.

With that information, do you think these same people give a f*ck about changes to Ant-Man?

Now let me play devil's advocate for a moment and talk about some of these drastic changes. And they ARE drastic.

They kind of center around the choice decision to make Hank Pym Michael Douglas. I love Michael Douglas - Romancing the Stone is one of my favorite movies... and I don't really have a lasting interest in Henry Pym. Be that as it may, you would either have Janet be his wife with an age gap more extensive than Douglas and Zeta-Jones... or you'd have something completely different.

Janet is probably everyone's LEAST favorite Avenger. Considering how un-popular Ant-Man is, that's saying something. Even so, I understand what it means to completely eliminate a character simply because of a change to another one - and if I were a feminist, I'd be kind of arbitrarily pissed about it.

Hank lost his wife in events taking place before his first appearance. Had nothing to do with his work, but all the same, it affected him a great deal. There's that element. Not too long ago, right before and after I stopped reading comics, Janet was killed in Secret Invasion (in a very poorly-handled way of having skrull-Hank give her a special formula that would help her change her size faster and easier, but was actually making her into a giant bomb - so Thor basically teleported her someplace else.) After that, Hank was having his own problems dealing with Janet's apparent death, and took the Wasp identity while also getting a little serious with Jocasta - who was actually based off of Janet.

In this movie, we're told, Hank Pym lost Janet in an accident which, with the help of Darren Cross, ruined him in the scientific community. Their daughter, more or less an original character, may or may not have attributes of Janet from the comics, as well as Cassie Lang (considering Cross is holding her hostage, those two have a lot in common as being a motivator for both Ant-Men).

Darren Cross himself is so obscure, I had never heard of him up until the announcement. He might be a blend of a bunch of characters, like Egghead meets the Yellowjacket identity that Pym went crazy with in the 70s. We're seeing another Obidiah Stane with Iron Monger, to be sure, but hopefully he'll be more hands-on.

So now that I'm done flexing my nerd muscles, let's go back to the most important part of any of this - the general audience doesn't care. Doesn't mean you shouldn't, but it also means that unless the film actually stinks, it won't make a difference.
