Edgar Wright On The Challenge Of Making ANT-MAN PG-13

The World's End director has been notoriously tight lipped when it comes to his big-screen take on the diminutive Marvel superhero, and that continues in a chat with SFX. However, he does comment on having to "entertain in a different way" with the movie, as well as the level of comedy we can expect.

When Edgar Wright and frequent collaborator's Simon OPegg and Nick Frost sat down with SFX, the trio were quizzed about Ant-Man. Pegg and Frost are big comic book fans, but neither are likely to appear in the movie...with Pegg joking that if Wright asked him to he'd "think about it, but as his friend and his lawyer, I would advise strongly against asking me.” The interviewer goes on to try to get more info on the project from Wright, but it's no use - the director is a rock! He does reveal that because he's used to making R-rated movies that it might be difficult to tone down certain elements to better suit Marvel's standard PG-13 rating. “In a way, it’s a challenge,” he tells the mag. “It’s a challenge to do. Shaun and Hot Fuzz and World’s End are all R-rated films. I like the challenge of making a PG-13 film. Because you’ve got to entertain in a different way. You don’t have the same tools. It’s also different in terms of Scott Pilgrim. They’re both adaptations. It’s nice to be able to do an adaptation." He also relents and agrees to answer one direct question: how much humor will be present in the movie? “I think it would be as funny as the other Marvel movies that have come out.” So, a lot then. I love Marvel humor... but I think they're starting to go over board with it.

That's what Thor 2 and IM3 suffered with IMO.

if Marvels humor was so detrimental these pass two flicks why were they end up being so successful? i hear the most groans and moans on this site, yet everyone else on average is enjoying these movies

Humor belongs in Ant-Man but should be limited in movies like Thor.
Humor in Ironman 3 was a great thing same with Avengers.

These "action movies" and their attempt to be "funny", YUCK.
I watched The Hobbit - DoS 12 h ago, Peter Jackson must've suffered from Marvel-illnes, lame jokes in every sequence, scene after scene after scene.

These two hobbits movies are a copy of the failure of the Star Wars prequels - poor dialogue, over the top action sequences, Legolas looking like a doll (seriously, you think he's animated from the first scene) and also the whole movie looks like a computer game.

In 2030 you will look back at the "superhero-era" and go: wtf were they thinking.

Point is, get these stupid 'wannabe serious but still putting lame ass jokes in every single dialouge" out of the cinema.

Apart from the gore, Wright's films aren't really that hard of R's.

He'll do fine.

Here comes the humor haters. Who would've ever thought there so many depressing fanboys around. Lol.

Anyhow, does Paul Rudd have the role or what? Cast him already.

Had no problem with the comedy in IM3 and thor 2, had a great time watching both.

I think it's teens and emos who want everything dark and gritty.

Looking forward to Ant-Man!

i hate hank pym as a character seriously . so it's hard to find humor in a pill poppin , wife beating , asshole, responsible for the death of several hero's. richards knows more about pym particles then hank
[frick] this flim , so many other marvel characters they can choose from

Just because Marvel is a subsidiary of Disney doesn't mean Disney is influencing Marvel what direction they're movies are going in. Go ahead and continue to be ignorant though.

If you have a problem with the tone or direction they're going in with some of their movies, then DON'T WATCH THEM.

@0megaDaGod Exactly!!

The Lethal Weapon movies are action comedies(they even played them on Comedy Central) yet nobody bitches about them

If you want your "dark, gritty(people on this site love those words, lol) and gloomy" movies, then watch Blade trilogy, The Crow, or TDK trilogy(movies I enjoy by the way).

@NIBS

when it is just punchline after punchline coming from every character in completely unrealistic ways, it is stupid and makes the movie feel corny.

Reed Richards, Hal Jordan, and Superman are others that comes to mind that fall into similar categories.

Nothing is wrong with comedy but when your comic relief character has a comic relief partner.....that is just overboard. @Truehero Lethal weapon also had a serious tone with comedy thats rated R, totally different from Marvel.

It's funny how so many people ignore all the adult content thats present in 90% of the stuff Disney put out. Just look at all of their animated stuff. Disney can't do a child's film without killing someone off.

Some of you act like Disney is all about cotton candy clouds and rainbows.

"Just because Marvel is a subsidiary of Disney doesn't mean Disney is influencing Marvel what direction they're movies are going in."

This. If Disney had any influence over the MCU films we wouldn't have had scenes like Thor getting his hand cut off, people blowing up in IM3, Tony calling that kid a pussy etc....

TelaVizion - 12/11/2013, 6:21 AM
Thor's comics has humor in them and so should his movies.

Just look at the God Butcher story arc. As dark as that whole story arc was, there was a lot there to laugh at.

(God I wish they would do that story for a movie. Would never happen anytime soon, but would be so great. Even leave in the bit of his granddaughter wanting to f*ck him)
