Edgar Wright Talks ANT-MAN; Describes It As "Standalone", But Will It Be A Comedy?

Edgar Wright talks more about the tone of Ant-Man, reiterating that while it WILL take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's also a fairly standalone movie. The writer/director also reveals whether or not it will be as comedic as his previous films and shares his thoughts on Star Wars Episode VII.

"I think it’s just doing its own thing in the accepted history but it's still part of the other movies and always was," Edgar Wright said when asked about where exactly Ant-Man fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after numerous delays. While there have been reports that part of the movie will take place in the past (featuring Hank Pym in the 70s and Scott Lang in the present day), we don't know exactly what has happened to the screenplay since or whether we should expect to see the character appear in the third instalment of The Avengers franchise. "In the time I’ve been working on it other things have happened in the other movies that could be affected in this. It is pretty standalone in the way we’re linking it to the others. I like to make it standalone because I think the premise of it needs time. I want to put the crazy premise of it into a real world, which is why I think "Iron Man" really works because it’s a relatively simple universe; it’s relatable. I definitely want to go into finding a streamlined format where you use the origin format to introduce the main character and further adventures can bring other people into it. I’m a big believer in keeping it relatively simple and Marvel agrees on that front."

All of Wright's previous movies - including Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World - have been comedic in terms of tone, so when asked whether or not Ant-Man will follow in the footsteps of that, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World's End, he added: "It's hard to say, my head’s still in 'World’s End.' I think it’s funny…I wouldn’t say it has any of the comedy that is in my previous but I think it’ll be in a different vein. There’ll be less swearing in it." Finally, the writer and director was asked to share his thoughts on J.J. Abrams' apparent decision to bring back some of the original cast members for Star Wars Episode VII. "I think it's more than okay to have the stars of the previous movies appear as elders and I don't think they will be the leads. I think it's just about passing the torch. I guess the proposed spin-off movies could go off into complete new worlds. I am a big fan of 4, 5 and 6, so I'm intrigued as to what J.J. does with 7." What do you guys think of these comments? Looks like Wright will actually make the character relevant with his interpretation. It will probably be Pym and Lang vs some big bad organisation.

Lang will be in it for sure, wouldn't even be surprised if he's the main Ant-Man of the film.

I like that he's not in Avengers 2.

We had two movies of Iron Man and that's kind of how long it took to get to know the character and find out whether we really like him or really don't.

Ant Man needs this kind of treatment.
It's very disgraceful that he won't be Ultron's creator. But hopefully audiences will love him and Wasp.

Am I the only one in the minority who could care less for an Antman film at this point? First they opt to replace Antman and Wasp with black widow and Hawkeye in Avengers, then they reveal that Antman will neither be in Avengers 2 or be the creator or Ultron, now its being revealed that Antman will not be about the Pyms. Its almost as if Marvel is aware of the most popular story lines in the comic book history and taking a big steaming dump on top of it with their cinematic interpretations.

Speaking of Doom I wonder who'll be the next Dr.Doom in the Fantastic Four Reboot?

Or if they'll even use Doom as the first villain they face?

Edgar Wright is the only reason why I'll see this movie. All his movies have been awesome, and World's End has been getting great reviews so far.

I have total faith in Edgar Wright to make Ant-Man a great movie. He's the "Wright" guy for the job (couldn't resist)

And I think they should cast Timothy Olyphant for Dr. Doom in the reboot. Unconventional, I know, but I believe Timmy could pull it off well.

i am interested in this, i dont mind it being standalone and simple because if you put alot of people of things in the first movie then it will sink it cause they would be too much going on, lets not doubt him yet,we saw the concept footage and it was great, you can judge whether you like where hes going with it when we see actual FOOTAGE OF THE ACTUAL MOVIE!!

@Batz11, that was the argument for the botched Mandarin storyline in Iron Man 3, yet they supplement the real world talk with villains that can explode, project fire and regenerate limbs.

Batz- cause nowadays, we need to be able to connect to the world because we cant believe these fantastical things are happening cause we find it insulting to our world because of the tragedies that have happened and we cant suspend disbelief because audiences have become too smart for their own good and not realize they are watching a FRICKING MOVIE!!... anyway blah blah

OldBenKenobi - 8/21/2013, 11:40 AM
Hm. With they way they're treating him they might as well leave Pym out of it. I hope the movie is at least good enough to make up for screwing up everything interesting about him.

Oh God, Marvel. Enough with the comedies already. I know you want your movies to be fun and enjoyable, but that doesn't mean you have to turn them into slapstick family schtick.
ezio619
ezio619 - 8/21/2013, 11:41 AM
everybody needs to relax, having comedy in a movie does not mean that it will be a full blown comedy, they can be a balance of it and thats probably what edgar wright will be doing cause he can do that while shane black could not really balance it
TelaVizion
TelaVizion - 8/21/2013, 11:42 AM
Hank is cool, Ant-Man is not.... But hopefully Wasp is in this (get her powers)... And I think Hank should grow at the end of the movie. Now if you do that, you will definitely need a strong villain (anyone in Marvel) to give reason for him to use growing powers.

DISNEY HAS NO FRICKING CONTROL OVER THESE FILMS, ALL THE DECISIONS ARE BY MARVEL AND THE CREATIVE FORCES BEHIND THE FILMS EX(THE DIRECTOR AND THE WRITERS)IF IT WAS DISNEY AND KID FRIENDLY, THEY WOULD NOT HAVE LET TONY CALL HARLEY A PUSSY,THEY WOUDLD NOT HAVE HAD A PERSON BLOWING UP AND KILLING A LOT OF PEOPLE...GODDDDDDDD!!

@MrSundayNight

I'm sure we'll see him in Phase 3 for sure. However I think it was kinda lame how War Machine didn't even at least get a cameo in Avengers. I honestly think a War Machine Spin-Off could work great. But I would like them to recast cast with a much younger actor.

A Black Panther film could work great as well! The setting, animals and it just has that earthly natural wild side we haven't seen in any Marvel film yet. However I will say this have someone direct the film who REALLY cares about he hero because Blank Panther is a VERY intelligent hero. EMH showed me how great his character was.

@ezio, Iron man 2, Thor, Avengers.. they all had it too. Even without Disney. So yes we can complain
