New Details On 'The Wasp' Role In ANT-MAN And 'Scott Lang' In CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
While Kevin Feige teases the role that Janet van Dyne aka the Wasp will play in Ant-Man, as well as in the future, director Peyton Reed shares thoughts on the title superhero's next appearance.
It appears the embargo has finally been lifted for journalists to report on what they learned about Ant-Man not only from a set visit last year, but also from a visit to Industrial Light & Magic last week. And while Slash Film has compiled 65 neat facts about the Phase Two of Marvel Cinematic Universe finale, Screen Rant has some intriguing details about Janet Van Dyne aka The Wasp's role Ant-Man and beyond, as well as Scott Lang's (Paul Rudd) return in Captain America: Civil War.
First up, Kevin Feige was asked how much does the Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne factor into Ant-Man. "It factors in, in a number of spoiler-ish ways, but we will see Janet Van Dyne in action in this film," said the Marvel Studios president of production/producer. "And part of sort of what happened to her. And then we will understand why that is the reason that he doesn’t want his daughter to follow in those footsteps. One of the reasons why he’s always so upset about superheroes in general, dismissive of them in general and also a reason why he doesn’t want her to put on the suit." Feige continued, "Because another very logical question in the movie is, why are you hiring this ex-con to put on your suit and do this? The answer is, because he has abilities in cracking security networks and in pulling off heists that nobody else has. Which is really why he needs to do it. But Hope is infinitely more capable of actually being a superhero in the beginning of this film, and we learn sort of that that’s ultimately when Hank reveals for the first time for the audience, and even the first time to Hope, what actually happened in the past and why he’s so nervous about putting on that suit. But there are things that we see towards the end of the film that indicate she could, she could get one of her own." In other words, don't be too surprised if/when Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) takes up the Wasp mantle in future movies, maybe during the two-part Avengers: Infinity War event if not in Captain America: Civil War alongside Ant-Man.
Entering minor spoiler territory, Collider reports that Marvel Studios did not cast a big-name actress as Janet van Dyne, who is Hank Pym's wife & Hope van Dyne's mother, because we only see her briefly in a closeup on her eyes. Apparently, she "appears in a flashback, and while we don’t know if she dies or gets lost in the microverse, Pym blames S.H.I.E.L.D. and resents superheroes."
About Scott Lang returning as an Avenger in Captain America: Civil War next year, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed was asked if he's been collaborating with fellow MCU directors Joe and Anthony Russo. "Yeah, definitely," said Reed. "As we were doing the movie and we were in post and they were getting ready to head out to Atlanta to do Civil War, we had a lot of conversations. And I actually wanted those guys to come in and look at our stuff, because there’s gotta be a lot of sort of crossover. I found myself getting extremely protective over the character of Scott Lang and talking to the guys, the writers, the Russo’s about, “He wouldn’t do that.” It’s important because there’s this continuity that has to happen in this universe. It was really, really great because I’ve known those guys for a long time and it was really good to sort of bring them in, show them stuff, and see them get jazzed about stuff that they were doing. I liked that about the process."
When asked if the Russo brothers will have to use his filmmaking techniques for Ant-Man's shrinking sequences in Civil War, Peyton Reed said, "It’s a constant one-upmanship of how you present these characters." He continued, "You know, you sort of… One of the things when we started working on this was I want to see all these different… things I love from the comics and then things we just imagined, like just scenarios to put him in and thing to see him do, and like let’s pack as much as we can into this movie. So by the time the Russo’s get it, it was like, 'All right. You guys figure out what you are going to do with it.' That’s one of the fun things about it, is watching these characters grow and evolve." Head to Slash Film for more. What do you think?
