Peyton Reed Confirms Cassie Lang Will Feature In ANT-MAN

In an interview from SDCC, Peyton Reed revealed that Scott Lang's daughter, Cassie, would be a part of Ant-Man. Whilst it's not a huge surprise, given the creative liberties being taken with this one we couldn't be certain! Hit the jump for more.

Marvel's upcoming Ant-Man movie is looking like a very loose adaptation of the character in every sense of the word, and whilst we may be seeing a very different take of Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, it at least looks like we'll be getting a faithful adaptation of Scott Lang's character. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Peyton Reed confirmed that Lang's daughter, Cassie Lang, would be a part of the movie.

Whilst talking about the themes of the movie, Peyton commented that it has a "real personal dynamic", then elaborating on that comment by saying "in the comics Scott Lang has a daughter, and that's part of the movie too." So, unless Marvel are pulling another Hope Van Dyne, it seems that Cassie will definitely be a part of Ant-Man, which makes sense given her role in the To Steal An Ant-Man story - which the movie appears to be based on.

Reed was also asked about the challenge of putting a character whose superpower is commanding an army of ants, describing the ability as "mobilising an army". He again confirmed that it's a "passing of the torch movie", plus yet again also called it a "heist movie." Not too much new stuff, but at least it all seems in good hands! Ant-Man will hit theaters July 17th, 2015.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world. Ant-Man stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne and Corey Stoll as Darren Cross. Additionally, Michael Peña and David Dastmalchain will feature in current unannounced roles. Ant-Man will release July 17th, 2015.

Man, Edgar Wright's twitter is full of strange depressing statements like

"Good luck to James Gunn this weekend. Truly one of the good people"

Truly one of the good people? Just WTF did Marvel do?

While this is probably my least anticipated major CBM (along with F4) I still have hope it will turn out well. Marvel Studios knows how to make an entertaining CBM, and they are hitting nothing but home runs as of late, so in Feige I trust. Still hate the changes they have made, but once we see them in the film, and in context then we can truly judge. That being said...couldn't they have done this same movie with a 40 yr old Pym? It would have helped to silence the haters and it still could have been almost the same movie while allowing us to get the version of Pym we all wanted to see. 1 change to Edgar's script coukd have made a world of difference IMO. Oh well, still hopeful. Love Michael Douglas, I'm sure he'll do a good job with it. Even if it's not the Pym we wanted to see.

Wright is probably regretting not wanting to be a team player. Oh well,good riddance.

what i REALLY want to know are:

-will Bill Foster (Goliath) be in this..?

-how bout Janet Van Dyne..??

-will RDJ's Tony make a cameo..his dad, Howard, MUST've been featured significantly in Douglas' Pym's past.

You remember when Wright was director, and everyone thought he was an awesome pick? But now that he's gone people hate him.

Anyways nice find LMB

Passing of the torch?
Why should we care the torch is being passed on if we've barely had any time with Hank and Janet?

I'm glad it's a film in which Ant-Man's key ability is put into good use. Before all these updates and Wright's departure, I was wondering how they're gonna do him with a plot that could involve his abilities. But I think heists make almost everything interesting.

I hope we can get a Young Avengers after Avengers 3. And still include the Avengers trying to shut them down part of the original series.

@CherryBomb

I think the relationship between Pym and Lang is in congruence with the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond. Pym might simply become too old for the mantle of Ant-Man and will pass it to Lang. We could get some screen time of Pym in action as Ant-Man, but I guess the entire "passing of the torch" theme in the film will be incorporated all through out the film in some way or another.

Most likely the general audience won't care, but fans will since they're already attached to Pym.

The problem with CBM fans is that because these movies are announced so far in advance, everyone develops their own version of how they think the story should go. I'm sure there was a version of the script where Pym was a contemporary of the Avengers written at some point. But obviously, the current version is the one that won out. Let's be honest, GOTG was incredible and it was very loosely based on the comics in terms of style. Yes, they included a lot of comic book characters, but the style of the film was very largely original. Gunn had a vision for what he wanted to do and Marvel let him do it and it turned out amazing. The same goes for Antman, Wright had a vision of a heist movie featuring Lang and an older Pym. Obviously, there were some disagreements about some things, but Marvel is going with that idea for a script that Wright was so passionate about.

Is this the direction I would prefer the film go? No. I love Pym and would love to see him as a contemporary of Stark

But instead of complaining about it, I trust the studio who made me care about characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Guardians of the Galaxy. 10 years ago I was all about X-Men, but now I trust Marvel Studios because they took obscure characters and turned them into extremely lucrative properties.

I said all of that to say this. Every other studio is so far away from bringing a character like Ant-Man to the big screen that we should be thankful for what we're getting.

Purists like Robert Liefeld are annoying as heck. If Marvel Studios went with his ideas for movies, then they wouldn't have gotten past Iron Man.

Hey Robert Liefeld, go watch Marvel Knights movies if you want a movie that's 100% like the comics.

I'm just worried how this will affect the comics. If this is a sucess, you know Marvel will be doing some changing.

i swear every news after the they reaveld the plot synopsis has been completey horse shit and the confusing thing is I thought peyuon specifically said were not seeing edgar wrights ant man and yet the script and the story is the samd? the hell man? what did they even change besides writing out matt geralds character! and even tho most people might not know who ant man is im pretty sure there expecting The Ant Man as in The Original aAnt Man. also if marvel did have their own take on this character then they really wouldnt need to make his own movie they could easily incorporate pym and janet into an avengers movhe and if not is it really that hard to still keep the main storyline but just change 3 simple roler Michal douglas as Vernane van dyne lily as janet van dyne and paul rudd as hank pym?

"I think the relationship between Pym and Lang is in congruence with the relationship between Bruce Wayne and Terry McGinnis in Batman Beyond."

I agree with this wholeheartedly, and it was the first thing that I thought of when they announced the synopsis at SDCC. I can't speak for Cherry, but I think that Batman Beyond is a bad comparison other than in synopsis only. When Beyond hit, in the animated universe alone, batman had four seasons of his own show, appearances in the Superman series, and I believe, one season of Justice League. That is a lot of investment in Batman before we find him in a place where he can no longer really don the cowl.

If Beyond had been another show, about other characters we didn't know, I am not sure the dynamic would have been as interesting. The thought of one of the most physically prominent humans being relegated to coaching a kid over a screen and headphones is all the more tragic when you are invested in who Batman is and was.
Invictor
Invictor - 8/6/2014, 8:50 AM
@Cles

I agree with you also. I don't think it will be like a Batman Beyond relationship to the general audience, but I think it may be like that to fans because Pym has decades of history that fans have known (even though it may be subject to change because it's in the Marvel Cinematic Universe)for a while. We were invested in Pym being the main character and being Ant-Man for a while before we heard that Lang was going to even be the main character in the film, so I think that and Pym having most of the spotlight in the comics pretty much covers the Batman: The Animated Series/Prelude component of Batman Beyond for the fans out there.

Maybe Hank and Janet have a son named Hank Pym Jr. and we could still get Hank Pym?
Cles
Cles - 8/6/2014, 8:59 AM
@Superior

Agreed, but that will not be the case with the general audience. Do I think it will be a good movie? Honestly, I do. But, it would have been nice to have had some Pym adventures first to get the GA invested; then bring in Lang. Given, now that we have Old Man Pym, that would prove difficult. Unfortunately, it is, in my eyes, a gross mishandling of the property, and a metric ton of lost opportunities.

I agree with you on the amount of Pym we'll be missing out on. I would say a One Shot could help, but it couldn't. The most they could do now is a prequel or Netflix series covering Pym's early years.
