AQUAMAN Release Date Pushed Back To Christmas 2018

It's just been announced that Warner Bros. has pushed the release of James Wan's Aquaman back a couple months. The DC Comics adaptation will now swim into theaters close to Christmas of next year.

Warner Bros. has officially announced that Aquaman has been pushed back 2 months from October 5 to December 21, 2018. If that release date looks familiar, it's because it was originally held by 20th Century Fox's Avatar 2 until director James Cameron decided to delay the first sequel to is mega-blockbuster.

The DC Comics adaptation won't be facing competition from a Star Wars movie next December (The Han Solo standalone film is set for a May release), but it is now sharing a release date with Sony's animated Spider-Man adventure, so a bit of a superhero showdown is on the cards.

James Wan directs Aquaman, which will star former Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa as the titular King of Atlantis, as he does battle with his villainous half-brother, Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) as well as Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen. Amber Heard will also feature as Mera.

@MrAisA - you kidding? This is great news. Yeah its two months longer but I'd take a pre-Christmas December release over a late October one anyday! This is gonna do nothing but boost the box office returns

@Super12 - Are you on crack? That means it's going up against STAR WARS and it going to be destroyed in the box office. This year at least is episode 8, so 2018 will be the Han Solo movie... still rough especially since Rogue One might be the best (second best?) Star Wars movie ever.

@TheGoat - Laughing my behind off right now. Remember when they came out with this DCEU lineup? People based more in reality were questioning how they could possibly meet all the dates. Well the logical answer was they could not. With the recent trend of bad news, why should this be any different. I swear it's like Warner Bros. took a crap on some ancient burial ground while planning their superhero stuff!

@SpideyQuad - It's sad to see, but hopefully WWoman will start to right the ship, although I have been losing hope on JL and Snyderverse. The news around Batman is bad too. First re-writes, then Ben bailed as directory, then rewrites again, then new directory, now new script and release date.

Aquaman is one of my least favorite DC characters, so while I hope it's solid and makes me a fan, I can go see this with zero expectations. (If reviews are decent.)

@MrAisA -

There were no on-set issues or filming issues and apparently the script was alright - so what happened?

Interestingly enough... Sony have apparently announced a Venom movie in October... is that why Warner Bros pushed it back? to avoid the Venom movie?

@TheGoat - Han Solo is set for May 2018. Disney already has Mary Poppins for Christmas.

The amazing water scenes, which won't draw one single extra moviegoer to come see it, are heavily delaying the movie... or its a complete ground up rewrite like Batman.

Did Namor actually start filming in Hawaii?

...and is that creating some pressure for Aquaman?

@TheGoat - Did you not read the article, it's going up against the animated Spiderman movie. Han Solo comes out in May. It's not going up against Star Wars at all.

@TheGoat - Put the crack pipe down and read the article. Han Solo's moving to May, leaving Aquaman with little competition. Like I said, great news.

@Fogs - I heard speculation Star Wars's Han Solo would be pushed to the usual December spot.
Hopefully that doesnt happen so Aquaman can potentially make bank

@Elayem - That rumor came up around New Years, because the eary casting press releases for the young Han movie nonly said it was coming "2018."

But Since then, Disney has...
- Stated via an Exec at a Conference that they excited about having two Star Wars movies in fiscal 2018. (Since Disney's Fiscal Year starts in October, she was referring to the Last Jedi and Han.)
- Posted multiple press releases that refer to "Mary Poppins Returns" as their Dec 2018 release. (Meaning Disney would have a significant schedule shakeup if Han was delayed.)
- Posted in multiple Han Solo press releases that it was set for May 25, 2015. If the rumor from New Years was correct when it was posted, they would have announced the change a long time ago.

So right now, barring some unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances, I'd say the May date is pretty secure.

@Elayem - Han Solo is going to be slotted for December unless Disney has another power house to move into that slot. That's when they have been doing their major release and killing the box office. Disney absolutely owned the box office last year and will continue to do so with a few Marvel movies, a pixar/animated release, a live action remake, and a STAR Wars film.

So if it's not Han Solo film, it will be a worse movie to go up against in this power slot. :(

Sign of the end times for DCEU? Project after project gets pushed back, loses scripts and directors, gains them. What a damn mess!!
