AQUAMAN Roars To The Biggest Opening Ever For Warner Bros. In China With An Impressive $93.6 Million Debut
Aquaman doesn't open in the United States for another two weeks, but it's already gotten off to a roaring start in the Middle Kingdom with a $93.6 million launch, which is the biggest ever for Warner Bros.
Two weeks ahead of its domestic debut, James Wan's Aquaman has gotten off to a roaring start at the international box office with a $93.6 million debut in China, making it the number one movie in the world.
Aquaman now holds the record for the biggest opening ever for a DC Comics property in China and the biggest opening ever in China for Warner Bros. overall, topping previous record-holder Ready Player One ($61.6M). It is also the fifth-biggest opening for a superhero film ever and the fourth largest opening for a U.S. film this year.
The underwater adventure has already topped the entire lifetime gross of both Wonder Woman ($90.4M) and Man of Steel ($63.4M) in China and should surpass both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($95.7M) and Justice League ($106M) before the end of the coming week, which is certainly good news as it gears up for a lengthy box office run through December and into the new year.
As for the domestic box office, Disney's Ralph Breaks the Internet ($16M; $258.1M worldwide total), Universal's The Grinch ($15M; $322.3M worldwide total), MGM's Creed II ($10M; $119.6M worldwide total), Warner Bros.' Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($6.8M; $568.5M worldwide total), and 20th Century Fox's Bohemian Rhapsody ($6M; $596.5M worldwide total) made up the Top 5.
From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.
