DCU: What take should be taken on Aquaman?

DCU: What take should be taken on Aquaman?

Many people have commented on a possible Wonder Woman movie, but I don't see anyone giving their opinions on a Possible Aquaman film. This said, let's jump in shall we? This isn't what I necessarily want to see, just what I expect to see.

Coming off of Man of Steel, most fans have been crying out for a Wonder Woman movie to be made. While I would like to see it get made, I personally prefer to see Aquaman get the blockbuster movie treatment. Aquaman has been rebooted for modern audiences by Geoff Jahns in the New 52 but for casual movie going audiences, it seems to me he has the most to prove, and therefore the most dramatic potential. This and Wonder Woman, while more popular, does have far more potential to screw things up do to her tricky subject material; much like Thor from the MCU who in the end only got a mediocre film debut. Even from a marketing point of view, I don't see Wonder Woman being made. A simple thing called demographics, will show you that audiences prefer male leads (even if this is because we don't get too many movies with female leads [Hunger Games, Terminator and Resident Evil]). I don't personally believe this, but studios don't like to take risks, and they may very well see WW as a HUGE risk. This being said, if he does get his own film what will we see?

Man of Steel took cues from The Dark Knight Saga, and set itself on the premise of the real world. The MCU did the exact opposite and made there universe very fantastical in order to accomodate potentially anyone. This will serve perfectly for moviegoing audiences, because it will create a necessary contrast to differentiate itself. Man of Steel also took the flashback style from The Dark Knight. The story of Arthur Curry is not as complex, in his origin as say The Dark Knight or Superman and so I don't think this will be necessary for Aquaman but I wouldn't count it out for future DC films. Man of Steel also took cues from the new 52. This means that for the future of Aquaman at least, we should probably expect a substantial amount of material, if for no other reason, because it was the New 52 that reinvigorated the character.

I do realize I said that Arthur Curry's origin is not as complex as batman and superman, but this isn't to say it isn't complex or interesting. Aquaman is very interesting. He comes off in the New 52 as a very Aragorn like figure. He is the king of Atlantis, yet he lives on the land. For an Aquaman story, I can very much see the potential in this. (Insert villain here) is the ruling King of Atlantis, Arthur Curry is relaxing on the land with his wife, a threat emerges from the ocean, forcing Aquaman to reclaim the throne of Atlantis. Not that this is what I'm looking to see, but this kind of simple story can be used effectively to explain Aquaman's origins without the need for flashbacks, all while cementing him as a badass for modern audiences.

This is all I really have to say. This is what I am looking forward with the DCU. Maybe not the story, but all the opportunities. What do you, the community think? What do you want for an Aquaman movie? Who do you think will receive the movie treatment next?

I always have wanted an Aquaman film. He is probably one of my favorite characters.

The world of Atlantis is rich & would make for a perfect film. I could see that the budget on this film could be a little high. So I would say to make it a little cheaper have Atlantis be a city underwater & when you are in the city there is no water in there.

I could see an Atlantis film being a bit like The Lord of The Rings. Just with Atantiens instead.

I always wanted to see Guillermo Del Toro to do the film. I believe he could have made characters like Lagoon Boy & Topo pretty cool. But he wants to do Justice League Dark. So that's not going to happen.

I think Philip Winchester could be an interesting choice for Arthur. I know he may not be that we'll known but he was great in Camelot & Crusoe.

The world of Aquaman is so ripe for a movie. That it really sucks that most people only know about Aquaman from the crappy show Super Friends.

But I believe that if WB would take a chance & make an Aquaman film it would do pretty good. Because the universe of Aquaman has all the stuff to make an epic film.

I also want to add it would have been interesting if Aquaman made a cameo appearance in Man of Steel. It would have been an end-credit scene it would have shown that Arthur was the one that destroyed the oil rig. It would not have been much at all but it would have shown that you don't mess with Aquaman.

New 52 style Aquaman with Orm or Black Manta as the villain.

I have no idea how you could make an Aquaman film. It would be very hard. While I do think that Aquaman should have a presence in a Justice League movie. I would give him a an obscure yet important role in the film(s) in which he would not formally be in the Justice League but be behind the scenes helping them in important ways.

SAMPLE STORY IDEA: One of the other Justice League superheros is engaged in combat with Lex Luthor - let's say Superman. Superman is hit with a Kryptonite rocket or something and is knocked unconscious into the sea. He wakes up on the beach and is weak from the Kryptonite exposure but he is not alone, a stranger (Aquaman) has set up a fire and a makeshift camp for him and stays with him until he regains his strength. Realizing he was pulled from the water by the stranger, Superman thanks him and strikes up a conversation whereas the stranger reveals key information that will help Superman and the rest of the Justice League defeat their enemies (somewhat like the role - SPOILER - the hologram of Jor -El played in movie Man of Steel). When Superman asks him how he knows this, the stranger would allude to learning about the secrets of the world from the information he obtains from the seas (since it covers most of the world) and from his time among people. As Superman gets better, the stranger would wish him well and disappear into the sea. This would be the role that he would play in all of the Justice league movies continually advising them and appearing to different justice league members providing useful information or strategies that help them win their battles but doing so in a mysterious way.

Unfortunately it is unlikely that much of the Justice League films would take place in the ocean. In many movies there are people who are obscure characters but help the hero get on the path to success which they could not do on their own...For example..

IRON MAN - The guy who operated on and saved Tony Stark when he was wounded and taken prisoner giving him the heart reactor.

CAPTAIN AMERICA - The scientist who chose and gave the super serum to Steve Rogers

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - The two prisoners who told Bruce Wayne about Bane and nursed him back to health and helped him figure out the secret of how to make the leap.

This would be the type of role that I think would best fit Aquaman. It could be significant but at the same time not require the movie to force the setting to be in the ocean.

@Forthas

Aquaman does plenty of shit outside the ocean. They wouldn't have to arrange the entire plot around the water just to give Aquaman something to do.

@ tvor03

Then what would be the point? He would be just another person who is strong which makes him redundant to anyone else who is strong. You might as well have Cyborg as the other Justice League Member.

Make Arthur into Aragorn, and you'll win.

Thor had a damn good debut. I don't see the complaints about his movie except for the love story. I understand the hate for his romance with Jane. Rushed way to quick.

Now, Aquaman needs the right story to engage audiences, make it part of the DC Universe and give us an appropriate villain.

If the GA thinks that Aquaman is a joke, the best solution is to show that he's not. Doesn't take a Justice League movie to do that.

If we can get something like Seventh Son, we can get Aquaman.
