THE AVENGERS Director Joss Whedon Shares His Thoughts On Agent Coulson's Resurrection
In a new interview, Director Joss Whedon reveals that he doesn't quite agree with Agent Phil's Coulson resurrection on Marvel's Agents of Shield and he also reveals whether or not Coulson has a chance of appearing on the big screen again. Check it out!
Remember when you all tuned into the Avengers for the first time in 2012 and you got to the scene where Loki stabbed and killed Agent Couslon. If you do, you'd also remember how his death brought the Avengers together and them coming together eventually led to the Avengers saving New York from the alien invasion. But then, a few month later, he returned!
Well, it seems as though Director Joss Whedon in a new interview with Mental Floss, felt as though the decision to bring Coulson back was a bit anomalous and that his resurrection took away a certain emotion aspect in The Avengers film. Check out his thoughts below!
"A lot of people come back in The Winter Soldier. It’s a grand Marvel tradition. Bucky was supposed to die. And the Coulson thing was, I think, a little anomalous just because that really came from the television division, which is sort of considered to be its own subsection of the Marvel universe. As far as the fiction of the movies, Coulson is dead.
But I have to say, watching the first one with my kids—I had not watched the first one since it came out—and then watching it with my kids and watching Coulson die but [thinking], “Yeah, but I know that he kind of isn’t,” it did take some of the punch out of it for me. Of course, I spent a lot of time making sure he didn’t. And at the time it seemed inoffensive, as long as it wasn’t referenced in the second movie, which it isn’t."
So it seems as though we will most liekly will NOT see Agent Colson in another big screen film (unless Marvel says otherwise). He then elaborates and says how he thinks in Marvel's big films, they can't kill of a big character or anyone significant. He also tells how the "victory, no lost" aspect doesn't sit right with him while he directs his films. His thoughts are below.
"There’s a thing where you can do that so many times and there’s nothing at stake. But it’s difficult because you’re living in franchise world—not just Marvel, but in most big films—where you can’t kill anyone, or anybody significant. And now I find myself with a huge crew of people and, although I’m not as bloodthirsty as some people like to pretend, I think it’s disingenuous to say we’re going to fight this great battle, but there’s not going to be any loss. So my feeling in these situations with Marvel is that if somebody has to be placed on the altar and sacrificed, I’ll let you guys decide if they stay there."
We've had many "deaths" in the MCU so far. Bucky, Nick Fury, Tony Stark, Agent Phil Coulson, all of which who were thought to be dead. Is it true that Marvel Studios won't kill off a pivotal character in their films? Will there continue to be victory without sacrifice in their films?
Ouch! It seems as though Avengers: Age of Ultron will have a lot of sacrifices to go along with their victory. Will the same thing go for Captain America: Civil War? As of now, its all just a wait and see. What did you think about Agent Coulson's revival? Sound off below with your thoughts.
