We're very sad to report that William Hurt has passed away. The Academy Award-winning actor, who played General "Thunderbolt" Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was 71 years old.
His son, Will, confirmed the news with the following post. Though it's not mentioned here, the actor is believed to have been battling cancer for some time.
“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”
Hurt received three consecutive Academy Awards nominations for Best Actor for Kiss of the Spider Woman (which he won), Children of a Lesser God , and Broadcast News. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for A History of Violence.
Hurt debuted as Ross in The Incredible Hulk, before reprising the role years later for Captain America: Civil War. He went on to appear as the character in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and the recent Black Widow movie.
