AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Directors Point To There Being A Time Jump Between That And AVENGERS 4

In a new director, Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo have indicated that we shouldn't necessarily expect Avengers 4 to follow its predecessor in a linear fashion. Check it out!

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos snapped his fingers and wiped out half of the universe. As a result, Avengers 4 is being kept a closely guarded secret and fans are obviously wondering how Marvel Studios will deal with bringing back all of those dead heroes. There's also a lot of speculation that there will be a time jump between the movies to make their disappearance more impactful.

Throw in those rumours about time travel and it's clear that Avengers 4 will take us to some unexpected place and that's something Joe and Anthony Russo have teased during a recent interview.

"Here’s the thing, I think it’s important to remember anything is possible in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe]," Anthony cryptically explains. "Just because there’s a sequel on the books doesn’t mean … people become accustomed to time moving linearly in the MCU. That doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. There’s a lot of very inventive ways of where the story can go."

Joe adds: "There’s four years between Guardians 2 and Infinity War. That’s a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe." The filmmaker's comments could be read in a couple of different ways, including a time jump for Avengers 4 and movies like Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being set in the past. For now, I guess we're going have to just wait and see...

Silly me for thinking IW happened on a Thursday and A4 will start on the Friday...

All of this talk actually makes me believe that the ash characters are not returning and Gunn was just misleading us witht the Vol. 3 being after IW. If Homecoming 2 is indeed before IW I'll believe it 30%.

@PINOYFAN - Yeah that's what I thought too. Like Black Panther 2 for instance is set before Infinity War, because there's like a two year gap between Black Panther 1 and Infinity War.

I don't know if that's such a good idea though.

I am hoping what Thanos said to Gamora about her planet flourishing once he did his work will be shown for other places like Earth and that is where IW2 will start from. Tony torn with resolving the past and having to take away a paradise from everyone. Can he do it?

One possibility: the dead are indeed dead forever in whatever timeline we were shown. THE AVENGERS will find a way to get to a world where the snap did not happen, but a few heroes will stay in the snap timeline to fight on.

Yes, this echoes an episode arc of GIJOE (among other stories), but it’s the only way I can think of that makes their statement about permanent death make sense.

@NoAssemblyReqd - That was the BEST episode of GIJoe ever.

@NoAssemblyReqd - Another way to parse Marvel’s words is to consider that the snap disappearances were not deaths at all. So, they would not be lying, just not forthcoming with the truth about what we saw.

@NoAssemblyReqd - Who are the Avengers equivalents to Steeler, Flash and Clutch?

@NoAssemblyReqd - can't really say if the dead are dead, but i respect the comic book origins from where this all originates and understand that if they don't come back in the next movie in the series that the possibility is always open for them to come back in the future... or for movies to be made about them in the past... its all comics... its all good.

I think the Guardians dealt with Warlock in the time Beteeen Guardians 2 and IW.

Maybe homecoming's 8*? Years later wasn't an accident... I honestly don't think something like that could go under the radar

@GeoAKLeo - No, The Russo's confirmed that that was a mistake.

@Unites - I hope they fix that in a future re-release with something like “Present Day.”

The comics learned a long time ago never to assign specific dates to events. Gives them lots of wiggle room.

Smacks of the multiverse plot device. What if A4 is set in another universe (that is, not 616) and Ant-man joins them through the Quantum realm to advise them of their fate in IW? A4 would then effectively start before IW. Awesome

So Josh, more random speculation. The MCU has already demonstrated that stories don't have to move in a straight line.

This tracks with what the leaks have said about A4 taking place 5 years after infinity war.

Setting at least Homecoming 2 before IW is a smart move for marketing reasons. They just have to have it start right after the last one so its clear when it is.

Another thing they could do is after the jump in A4 go "back in time" to prevent A3 from happening. Then you basically only lose a single movie, which makes sense.

So its IW (2018) ----> 5 years --- > A4-------

Uhh pretty sure what they mean by non-linear fashion is 1) Time travel and 2) Movies set in the past like Captain Marvel

“In a new director, Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.”

Things have been getting sloppy around here. It’s disappointing. This typo is in the byline. Let’s not be in such a hurry to beat others to the punch that we forget to proofread. Especially you JW, don’t give the haters any extra fuel...

I thought it would have been cool if A4 takes place 5 years or so after Infinity War. After maybe things really are benefitting from what Thanos did, to where there's a dilemma of whether or not trying to reverse it is even a good idea.

@4N6 - Like if Thanos snapped his fingers on a Saturday, and I came into work on Monday morning and realized all the annoying dead weight were gone. I wouldn't want to reverse it ;)

"The filmmaker's comments could be read in a couple of different ways, including a time jump for Avengers 4..."

A time jump in Avengers 4 still makes it linear.

Well, Amy Pascal and James Gunn certainly disprove the Russo brothers non-linear theory. Both of said in interviews that future installments of Spider-Man and GotG take place after Avengers 4. And those are the 1st 2 films of Phase 4 -assuming GotGv3 is the May 2020 release.

It was always going to be a hard-sell to try explain killing off franchise lead characters as permanent. Unless Avengers 4 is an interdimensional film (not a time travel story) and other timeline versions of these characters cross over -there is no way Marvel is killing off permanently Spider-Man (owned by Sony), Doctor Strange & Black Panther.
