It's official! Joss Whedon & Marvel Studios' global phenomenon has passed the $1.5 billion mark at the worldwide box office (via BoxOffice.com). The film opened in Japan a couple of weeks ago, which helped its gross, but Disney have also put it in 1700+ theatres this Labor Day weekend in North America. The 4-day domestic estimate for The Avengers this weekend is $2.2 million, and the domestic gross is now $620.1 million. Internationally, it grossed $882.3 million so far.

Marvel's The Avengers is the highest-grossing film of the year so far, and it's the third biggest film of all time, only behind Avatar and Titanic. The Blu-ray/DVD release of the film is set for September 25th.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures “Marvel’s The Avengers”--the super hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel super heroes Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins.

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon from a screenplay by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when “Marvel’s The Avengers” assemble on May 4, 2012. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. In addition to "Marvel's The Avengers," Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 3" on May 3, 2013; and “Thor 2” on November 8, 2013.

avatar will be beaten by avatar 2.

fantastic news, can only hope this will continue and beat both Avatar and Titanic. As for a Justice League movie, if done right, the fact that it's filled with A-List heroes (the Avengers consists of Marvel's well known but not most famous heroes, since Spidey, the X-Men, and probably the F4 are more famous)means it could probably take the number one spot. But I have very little faith in WB making the Justice League movie right. Man Of Steel could be excellent, but they're rushing into the Justice League without taking the time and care Marvel took. I'd much rather wait for a Justice League movie done right, than get a sub-standard one soon.

maybe with that money they can make a film that doesn't look like a scifi movie channel film. movie was great but looked way to much like a tv show.

What's this you say? The Avengers open on labor day weekend and only manages to gross $2.2 million. Wow, epic fail, my condolences to Joss Whedon and Disney. Better luck next time guys.

I'm honestly Proud of the fact that i was alive and able to witness the day that a movie that is quite literally the most comic booky and geekiest superhero movie that's every been made has earned both the people's love and 1.5 billion dollars. This is a bloody epic day!
@Yossarion : Well, obviously. It's appropriate too, since we all get sick of seeing SageMode, Intruder (aka StigMartyr) and ElGuAsOn bombarding any TDKR thread with their same old tired routine of "over-rated, herp derp" =)

Titanic is number one because there's more women in the world than men that accept that type of dramatic movie and men were suckered in watching it too. There's only two great scenes in that movie a boob scene and the part where the boat gets destroyed that's it.

How is Titanic still number one blame the ladies.

It's movies like Avengers, TDKR, and TASM that are really giving comic book characters a good name to the general public. What a wonderful year <3

Titanic and Avatar had more mass appeal than The Avengers..as popular as it was. For a CBM this is phenomenal.

Saw it yesterday on Blu-ray( invited a friend of mine that didn´t get to see it in the cinemas, but he´s part of that group of people that aren´t able to shut the [frick] up and pay attention to what is happening on screen "OMG THAT IS SO BADASS HEY WHO DO YOU THINK IS STRONGER THOR OR HULK..." and then starts to get lost and ask questions when they are about to be answered or have just been answered and then you also get lost and I´m the kinda of guy that likes to super-concentrated with no noise no talking no nothing. So gonna see it again today and again tommorow.

"Batman's popularity is high, but it's debatable if Superman is even popular right now."

"So for WB to throw a JLA movie together and expect it to do well, I'm sorry, but I don't see it making anywhere near Avengers, and dare I say even TDKR."

There´s a difference between appeal and popularity The Avengers have a larger appeal because they did a good job with their movies, Superman is the most popular hero and will always be, ask anyone in the civilised world who he is and they will tell you and they will most likely know is main powers, when I went to the theaters with some friends almost all of them were asking me who they were they came from what their powers were...

Very Proud Of this finally people outside comic book fans would take the comic book industry seriously and companies will see it as a likely source of income for I feel that this is an accomplishment all comicbook fans can be proud of both DC and Marvel fans as for Justice League Movie I am certain it would make money but it won't beat avengers no matter even though it has Batman in it... It won't smell avengers ass it may make like 700 Million worlwide and we know this as a fact and with superheroes in the justice league the have this demi-god like status which most people won't relate to with the non-comic readers and they may not be much humor in the movie except if the keep GL and make Wally West the flash (Neil Patrick-Harris For Wally West) but with the avengers movie the have relatable characters and the eye of the fans in the movie with agent coulson and RDJ is funny, Thor Is ok and seems to have a little humor in him, Captain America with his patriotic charisma and Hulk is just simply a Bad-Ass and this is why I think JL won't smell avengers ass when it comes to money and if sony could agree for spidey to appear in Avengers 3 which may follow the Civil War Route then Cameron can prepare he's seat on top spot to be taken
