Clark Gregg Answers "What Makes The Deadly Threat In THE AVENGERS Different From What We've Previously Seen?"

Speaking to the UK magazine SFX, actor Clark Gregg speaks out on his function in The Avengers, the unparalleled threat the teams faces and the relationship between Nick Fury and Coulson.

Source: SFX Magazine

On how Agent Coulson's role in The Avengers compares to his role in the previous films:

Clark Gregg:" I think he's different in the way everyone is different in The Avengers, in that the whole cast is building together the concept of a team. When you look at the team it's made out of rock stars, divas, and giant muscles with superpowers so somebody has the job backstage at Lollapalooza to make them all play in the same concert and super band - and that's what Agent Coulson does."

What makes the deadly threat in The Avengers different from what we've previously seen:

Gregg:"Well, you can imagine the kind of threat that would cause Nick Fury, Coulson and Agent Hill to bring this group of demented and brilliant individuals together. The threat is going to cause everybody to get pushed past the limits of anything we've ever seen."

Discussing the relationship between Agent Coulson and Director Fury;

Gregg: "The relationship between Coulson and Nick Fury goes back a little bit. He's the boss and all you need is one look from his one good eye and you get doing whatever you're supposed to be doing. Although I do tease him about it a little bit...just not to his face [laughs]."

There's tons more from Gregg in the magazine, so click here to order online. Gregg goes on to hint that we may get an Agent Coulson trailer so keep your eyes peeled to CBM because we'll be sure to post it if that drops.

The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States.

The Avengers is an upcoming American superhero film produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures1, based on the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It is the sixth installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which crosses over several Marvel superhero films including Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film is written and directed by Joss Whedon and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America to save the world from destruction.

Development of The Avengers began when Marvel Studios received a grant from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Scarlett Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the screenplay that was originally written by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. The film entered post-production at the conclusion of filming in September 2011.

The Avengers is scheduled for release on May 4, 2012 in the United States.

The Leviathon = The Midgard Serpent
Could be Annihilus. As far as I can tell, Annihilus is not owned by Fox.

Maybe it is Annihilu's annihilation wave that threatens to destroy Earth and Midguard etc.
I know the negative zone is more a FF thing, but The Avengers have gone up against Annihilus.

Every url for an official Avengers wallpaper from their site starts with "i.annihil.us"

Am I one of the few who don't like Thanos, don't want to see him, especially in THE FIRST Avengers movie, and think that he would suffer the Venom treatment from Spider-man 3?

I'm surprised that no one has suggested that Coulson could be Marvel's own "James Bond" type character in a spin-off movie... I think that'd be really cool.

As for the threat... I hope it's something more than just aliens, because why would a thunder God need help with that, when in Thor we saw him taking on an army of Jotenheim ice giants (Coolest scene in the movie, IMO) by himself?

I think one of The Avenger's biggest problems they must face is "Why would a god need help with a threat?"

I think I'd go crazy if the threat was a combination of Mandarin, Loki, and the aliens.

Here's what the storyline MIGHT be, just to introduce Mandarin....

Mandarin finds the alien technology. The aliens try diplomacy first to get it back, by sending in a small team to negotiate with Mandarin. He sends them back in particles. The aliens get angry and set a full scale invasion. Meanwhile (back with the LEGION OF DOOM.... sorry, couldn't resist) Mandarin is messing with the technology, and it turns out the aliens are a distant relative of the Asgardians, and the technology opens a portal and BOOM... out steps Loki. They begin to scheme. Mandarin, with the alien technology, and Loki, with his spear thing and god powers, and the aliens, with their alien-ness, would be more than enough for the Avengers, I would think.

For the end scene, Loki and Mandarin have managed to get to Asgard, retrieve the Infinity Gauntlet, and Mandarin says "Who is this for?" and Loki grins and says (Almost at a hissing whisper) "An old friend..."

yeah mate, any of them cosmic characters would be fine by me.

@ illwill

he's 5" 11" & if he is playing thanos he'll probably have to wear a motion capture suit,he may even be providing the voice.

@ Illwill , Tom Hardy is 5'9 and he's playing bane. Hugh Jackman is like 6foot something and he plays Wolverine.

The Avengers can't beat Thanos, he'll probably appear in a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The army might be something like the skrulls or Kang the Conqueror's army

@Intruder
I really think Annihilus would be great to start off this franchise and then lead up to Thanos, as you said, at the end. Although, Jeffrey Wright being on set is very suggestive.

Maybe Loki ended up in the negative zone at the end of Thor.

I kind of think if there is an invasion from the negative zone (or whatever they call it in the film), then each Avenger could essentially square off against something that suits their fighting style, powers and mythology e.g Thor against the Midgard Sepernt

I'm glad to not know more about the alien threat. And count me in the minority, but I hope the next trailer comes in March and shows nothing from the film's last reel.

This "preview of the teaser trailer" nonsense that TDKR and PROMETHEUS (not to mention last summer's CAPTAIN AMERICA) have going on is hype overkill.

Makes sense if they're tying this in with Norse mythology.
Rodimus9

This movie is about the assembling of the Avengers. So they're basically gonna have Fury talk about a threat heading to earth. The team is formed. They bicker and fight with each other for an hour if the movie. Then with 25-35 minutes left the aliens will attack and f*ck the place up and that's when they'll agree to assemble and "Avenge". They'll stop the alien race and get medals and that's all dandy. Post credits scene...Thanos in a cloaked ship in earths orbit talking to Loki about getting the infinity gauntlet for Asgard to help him beat the Avengers....or Loki hands it to him....fade to black.

Or it could be a lead into Dr. Strange-
"Varnae reigned as the unchallenged leader of Earth's vampires for many thousands of years before ceding the title and position to Vlad Dracul in the year 1459. Dracula retained this title in a nearly unbroken reign until Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, Dr. Stephen Strange, uncovered a mystical spell called the Montesi Formula that would banish all vampires from this dimension. Ironically, this spell was found within the Darkhold, the same mystical text containing the spell used to create vampires in the first place. Like most spells, the Montesi Formula contained a counter-spell, and within a few short years, vampires began to appear across the world once again. Dracula himself rose from the grave and reclaimed his title as Lord of the Vampires."

It really hope it makes sense why all these guys were needed to come together or else the movie would seem kinda pointless.

CaptainTall, Thor taking on all the Frost Giants by himself was one of my main problems with that movie! Why would Asgard need to fear or even mildly worry about those guys when they can just send a handfull of Thor's besties to take care of them in an afternoon?
