EDITORIAL: I've Figured It Out--Loki, Annihilus, and the Negative Zone!

Now that we've seen the trailer we have a few more clues as to who the alien threat is....

I am pretty sure the movie is dealing with the Negative Zone. Think about it. Where else would Loki have been transported to after he fell through a wormhole? Look at this still. Doesn't it look like a new dimension is being opened?

Anyone who is familiar with the Avengers have heard of a particular villain known as Annihilus who is a lord of the Negative Zone. He once invaded Asgard and was especially featured in a 2006 series called Annihilation Wave. Here are some of their alien space ships:

Notice the group of Annihilation Wave space ships destroying its enemy fleet. Look at the ones in the upper right hand area which are rather fish-like.

Now look at these pictures of the "Leviathan" from the trailer.

Don't they look similar?

Now look at Loki in his suit during the Stuttgart, Germany scene where he seeks to subjugate the crowd. Look at the "staff" and the flashing gem he's wielding:

People thought he was using the Cosmic Cube attached to a staff....but what if it is the Cosmic Control Rod? Here is is a picture of the Cosmic Control Rod chained around Annihilus' neck.

Here is the Cosmic Control Rod as its glowing by itself:

Notice the similarity in shape to the tube like gem attached to Loki's staff.

My theory is that Loki fell into a wormhole at the end of Thor where he enters the Negative Zone and encounters Annihilus. There he makes a pact with the Negative Zone warlord to bring the Annihilation Wave to Earth. Annihilus then gives Loki the Cosmic Control Rod to help accomplish the task. Here is where the Cosmic Cube comes into play: Loki will use it to open up a direct portal to Earth and fights the Avengers with the Rod.

PS: A heads up from Tainted87 pointed out more proof that Annihilus and the Annihilation Wave will indeed be the other main villains in the Avengers backing up Loki. Right click on this wallpaper image from the Avengers Movie site. Now left click on "Open Image in New Tab". Look at the URL:

That's a good theory. Only you need to fix your second pic, I can't see it. :(

I never thought of it being the Cosmic Control Rod, good guess actually. I figure the picture here:

Is perhaps the Helicarrier in water. But I'm not sure of that, it looks more like a big complex, but if it is the Helicarrier, I think it is "Loki's cosmic cube escape". At least to me it looks like the cube energy. But IDK for certain.

What do you think?

that's not the helicarrier @superotherside in the trailer when that scene appears that building is actually getting destroyed in the process you can see it like cave in.

Possible. Nicely written, btw.

However, Fox wanted Annihilus in FF3.

So I think they own the character.

I always though Loki ended up in the N-Zone.

But I'm going to say the villains are...

LOKI and MINIONS OF THANOS.(minus Thanos)

Thanos is always involved with the Cosmic Cube.

Infinity Gauntlet tease can't be for nothing.

I know I may sound biased all things considered, but I'd just as well as have it disproved JUST because I don't want the surprise spoiled for me.

I really hate Thanos though, think he's way overrated and an annoyingly uber-powerful precursor to Superboy Prime. There's a very good reason why writers haven't included him in a whole lot, and why Drax tore his heart out fairly early on. Also, why have Thanos so early on when nothing cosmic has really been established so far?

The Infinity Gauntlet is a literal blink and you'll miss it easter egg. You may even be looking for it and you'll miss it. The Human Torch (Jim Hammond) easter egg was a bigger thing in Cap.

I don't think Fox owns the character Annihilus. Just because the character debuted in F4 doesn't mean he's exclusive. Look at Black Panther.

The i.annihil.us thingy just proves that it isn't Annihilus! That's right, someone is just playing with us and stirring up trouble. Next thing you know someone will suggest that the invaders are from the Microverse (the Micronauts did encounter S.H.I.E.L.D. maybe Loki cut a deal with Baron Karza)

I hate to burst bubbles, but as someone who's been going to the Marvel website for years, they've had the "http://i.annihil.us" url thing for years, way before the Avengers movie was being made. It's an easter egg for fans, but nothing to do with the Avengers movie; it's been used for random articles, image urls, download links, etc. T

That's the Chrysler building not Empire State. And Loki gets that staff from the German art expo, he doesn't have it with him when he shows up on Earth.
So, basically, Loki shows up on Earth, gets to the staff, Avengers show up and kick his ass, SHIELD arrests him, escapes mind controlling Hawkeye and stealing the cube. Tells Avengers to let him control Earth or his army shows up. Computer says no, army shows up. Avengers save the day. Roll credits. Thanos.

Helena - 3/2/2012, 3:20 AM
These invaders have spaceships too, my man. This portal is just that, a portal. You are saying inter-dimensional because you have been reading way too much. It may not necessarily be to another dimension but to a far, far, FAR side of our own universe. Even with spaceships, why would you waste enormous quantities of fuel resources and time to get your fleet to a little planet on the other side of the galaxy when you can use a little beam of energy to send one guy here, Loki, and have him get you a never ending energy source, aka le cube?

Also, the Asgardian machine opened portals to other sides of the universe, with Jotunheim being an alien planet and not on another dimension, so how would Loki arrive on another dimension in the first place to meet Annihilus?

I'm not putting the Annihilus theory to rest, I'm just showing it ain't kosher. We've seen by now that in his staff his some sort of gem and not alike the cosmic control rod.

Great article. Despite all the theories, for a couple of months now I have always thought it was going to be Annihilus and his army.
As far as I can find out, Fox owns the Fantastic Four, Dr Doom and mutants.
Check out this article from Screenrant:
Comic Book Characters owned by Fox. According to this list you can see Fox have rights to Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr Fantastic and The Thing as well as Dr Doom and various other minor supporting characters (i.e Nova and Willie Lumpkin). The list does not include Annihilus, Skrulls, Super Skrull or even the Kree.

Also, whatever is coming from that portal fits in nicely with having some sort of connection or link to the Negative Zone. If the alien army was based in the Avengers universe (+ve), they could easily have arrived in ships. This notion does not preclude that an alien army in the +ve universe couldn't use a wormhole/portal to travel the immense distances of space, but using a portal neatly explains the arrival of a SUDDEN threat and from what I can pertain, from nowhere.

I did read a theory here on CBM a few weeks ago that said that Loki does not just simply arrive on Midgard. Selvig and SHIELD could be using the Cosmic Cube as a power source to create an Einstein-Rosen bridge. Selvig succeeds in opening a wormhole and Loki makes his way through. If Loki was somehow trapped in the Negative Zone then maybe he needs Selvig and the Cosmic Cube to get him back. Perhaps the Cube is the means to supply the power to open a portal to the Negative Zone. This gives alot of impetus to the Cube being used in the movie. If was just used to open a wormhole for Loki to come through to Midgard, then, from that point on, what other purpose could it serve? Well, the answer may be to open a wormhole/portal to the Negative Zone. Of course it can be used as a weapon, but it also has the capacity to be used as a battery to supply enough power to create a stable wormhole.

Also, I think Thanos is just way too powerful for an initial threat. Who would be the villain in a sequel? It would seem that if Thanos appeared as a villain in this film, then any villain following would seem rather tame in comparison. It's likely that Thanos could be teased at some point but does not really have a major presence in the movie.

Great theory but honestly it can be anything right about now i mean it can be Annihilus it makes sense loki falling into the negative zone but then like 3D said they wouldnt tease the gauntlet for no reason it can be thanos and his minions or it can be the rumors of the alpha centurians and the leviathan.... the movie is less than two months away lets just wait and see what happens.... never know what can happen all i know the skrulls are not in it :/ bummer

I like Helena's theory, as well as the Annihilus theory. But I was reading the comments and a theory (or just an idea) came to mind: Star Wars.

Star Wars is arguably the greates sci-fi franchise ever. Billions of dollars made from the multiple versions of each movie released, then re-released. All the toys and books and other merchandise. It's no wonder people don't try to copy it......here comes my thought...

What if Marvel is setting up their MCU like Star Wars.

First movie establishes the boundaries of the universe. Basically, we learn in Thor that magic and science are connected. Now in Avengers, we learn how other alien forces use that to oppress and dominate and take over.....a la Avengers 1 and Star Wars (ep IV) death star. Whether its Thanos or just Loki or someone else, they establish the main antagonist. Naturally, the good prevail, but only to piss of the evil and set up a darker second flick.

Second movie establishes that evil isn't f'n around. Slowly they infiltrate the good guys and when you thought it couldn't get worse....you know. Avengers 2 could establish Skrull and if I remember the Ultimates, there was a point where the Skrulls had everyone fooled and it seemed like the Avengers were done for. Then kill Thor in the end which could lead to Thor 3 being his return to the living by Hela who bargains with him to stop Surtur...or something like that.

Third movie, evil is dominating, but good is making moves and after an introduction to a couple of new characters (hank and jan, Black Panther, Mar-Vell), good overthrows evil a la Vader/Loki changing their heart and killing the emperor/Thanos.

This whole idea may seem dumb. I am by no means a comic book reader and/or a sci-fi buff. I just like the possibilities. But as a fan of superhero movies and sci-fi, I like the sound of my ideas.

@6of13- Wouldn't that make the after credits scene of Thor useless. Loki is already controlling Selvig when Fury contacts him about the Tesseract.

Starheart is right. I looked it up real quick and from what little I've seen, it dates back to the middle of 2010.

I had seen this pop up when the official site was first released, but no one really acknowledged the easter egg.

STILL!
Even without that, I think you presented your case very well. I truly thought it was the Skrulls, simply because you have Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America fighting each other in one place, then Black Widow kicking Hawkeye's ass in another (and the Hulk's first trailer transformation appears to be in that area, so...) - but all that may just be some training simulation like the X-Men's Danger Room.

Kevin Feige has said there aren't any Skrulls, but Marion Cotillard also said she's not playing a character from the comics.

Truly though, the "leviathan" looks like nothing from Thor's area of comics (not just the design, but it's a giant metal monster snake that flies!), and if it wasn't the Kree or the Skrulls, or Fing Fang Foom, it has to be from the Negative Zone.

The aliens look like a cross between Kurse and the Frost Giants, however.

Marvel's doing a great job at keeping us all guessing.

Thanos will not be in the main film. An insider here on CBM has pointed towards the alien army being of some relation to Thanos. Kevin Feige has declared the alien army as "not impactful" to the rest of Marvel Cinematic Universe. Annihilus and N-Zone Insectoids are huge. Annihilation is a huge story arc, beyond The Avengers.

Loki's army is fodder. A generic, alien horde, soldiers that are just a number. Why hide the identity of this army? Why give up toys, costumes, and other merchandising to hide the villains identity? Does it really matter if General Audience come in knowing the villains to be alien shapeshifters or robotic bug-like creatures? No. Marvel's hiding this for the fans.

And that's it. Marvel's hiding it for the fans. The Avenger's antagonist are simply marketed as an invading army. What Marvel is trying to hide is something only the fans will catch. A character who opens the many doors to the Cosmic Side of the MCU. Thanos.

They, themselves, are not impactful, but their associations are. Marvel have brandished the Infinity Gauntlet too often for it not to have a presence in this production. Thanos is also associated with the Cosmic Cube, maybe even more so than the Skrulls are, which some people underplay.

These aliens have blue skin, and golden gladiator-like armor. So does Thanos. I understand that some you are put off by this but I've had to accept this as the truth. I don't like Thanos and didn't understand why people wanted him in an Avengers movie. I never associated him with The Avengers. But, fact is, Marvel's big goal with The Avengers is to go cosmic.

Post-credits: Desolate Moon. A figure sits, almost lifeless. We see it's silhouette. He is all that remains of an army. Reaches for something- we can't see. With it's last bit of energy, it places on- The Infinity Gauntlet. It's gems illuminate the abysmal darkness of space. There is hope for him. Today, he begins his conquest- for the galaxy.

Of all of the theories thrown around on this site, I am actually starting to lean towards this one. It ties some ends together from previous movies and creates a global threat big enough to warrant the "avenger initiative."
