Has Pre-Production On The Avengers Been Delayed Due To Budget Issues?

According to Bleeding Cool, Marvel are planning on giving the movie a relatively low budget resulting in pre-production being delayed by weeks or even months...

Here are some highlights from their report. No source is given for where this information came from, so it might be worth taking it with a pinch of salt for the time being!

"Marvel are demanding that it all get done on the relative cheap. For something not far off what Sony paid to make their first Spider-Man film back in 2004."

"And while some people have walked off, others are planning a longer game. Basically do the work, then when they run out of budget (which they believe they will) trust that Marvel Studios and their investors will pony up the extra necessary cash rather than leave the movie unfinished."

"As a result of such staff changes, pre-production has been delayed weeks – possibly months."

I don't think that we have too much to worry about as Marvel are bound to realise just how much potential for a huge box office this movie has. Are they going to risk losing that by cutting the budget and making a shoddy movie? With Disney's backing, I highly doubt it! Be sure to share your thoughts on this news in the usual place!

I smell bullshit. Why would Marvel make The Avengers budget LESS than that of Cap or Thor? That's retarded. And with Disney backing it up? Come on....

Lansdowne5- 300mil??? Not in a million years. 180mil would be more realistic. 220mil at the very most.

Hmmm... This seems a bit specious to me. I mean,, if they can't even get the year Spider-Man was released right (2002), who's to trust their researchers on something YET to happen.
Someone had a slow news day and had to write something to justify their pay-cheque.

I would not be surprised if Marvel has a lower budget for Avengers then they do for Cap and Thor. The reason behind this is that the movie is still a relatively big risk. While fan boys (and girls) might flock to this movie, that does not guarantee it as a commercial success. Look at Watchmen, for example. Watchmen had a budget of 130M according to BoxOfficeMojo.com, and pulled in 107M domestically and 78M internationally. While fans of the material and genre flocked to it, mainstream audiences passed it up as a whole, even though comic fans and non comic fans have given high praise for the movie. People who have only seen Iron Man or Hulk might pass on Avengers as it might seem too confusing without having seen Cap and Thor. I am sure this is what Marvel is thinking about, even if this is just a rumor.

I'm calling the BS police on this, Marvel has been leading up to the Avengers for the last few years they're gonna want this movie done right so they're not gonna skimp on the budget.

I agree Shaman. No way the budget is 300mil. Iron man and Iron man 2 made just above that domestically. Which is probably ball park for what Avengers will do.

Pretty sure it was released 02 not 04

Spider-Man 2 was released in 04

juggy4711- EXACTLY!!! People don't realise that most studios need to make DOUBLE their money back to be satisfied. Unless Avengers is released in 3D, i highly doubt their rakings surpass 350mil. At least domestically.

marvel & disney spend some money & reap the rewards.

$250 million should be enough, the film is gonna gross more than that.

i reckon it could take $750 million easily at the box office.

JackJNapier - 11/3/2010, 12:18 PM
this is dumb. Of course Marvel is going to fork out the money for this movie. This will smash the boxoffices.

Spider-Man came out in 2002 not 2004, besides I'd imagine the budget for the first Spider-Man was relativley high. Avengers will be fine.

Ryden- I believe Spider-Man 1's budget was 140mil. But i could be wrong.

deadpool72- Um... i wish i shared your... dealer, but other than TDK & Spider-man 3's WORLD WIDE rakings, what CBM do you know that actually made those numbers? Why would Avengers be any different? Unless Thor and Cap are any different indication at all, i don't see Avengers eclipsing Ironman 1.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 11/3/2010, 12:41 PM
Yeah I doubt they will be finalizing budget until the numbers role in for Thor and Cap. Still, I understand them being apprehensive. If Thor or Cap fails to excite audiences they will take a serious knock to the momentum heading into Avengers.

spider-man 2002 (wikapedia,so it maybe right)

budget $140 million

world wide box office takings $821.71 million

x-men 3 had a budget of $210 million

marvel studios & disney spend about $250 million on the budget you tight f*ckers.

the avengers is something new take some risks.

"Do it right. Period. The money will be there after Thor and Captain America."

But that's not really a solution, as Avengers will go into production several months before those movies come out.

Anyway, I'm a little on the fence about this news.It has no source, so it could be BS.But, from what we know of the films, it could be true.

It could be BS because Marvel has been working up to this. They're not going to cheap out on this.

On the other hand, look at how much money they've already spent.

$170-200 million on Iron Man 2
$150 million on Thor.
$140 million on Captain America.
$200+? million on Avengers.
$115 million for the distribution rights(to be paid when Avengers/Iron Man 3 opens)

Iron Man 2 is the only one that's been released and it made $621 million. And don't they also have to pay that $500+ million they got from Merrill Lynch in 2013?

So outside of Iron Man 2 they've basically spent, or have committed to spending a total of about $547 million, before being able to see any return on those movies. That's a big risk.Spending half a billion dollars at once. And on top of that, there's the half a billion dollars they also have to pay back.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/3/2010, 1:00 PM
deadpool72- Touché, 783 766 341$ world wide to be exact. But that was Spider-Man who is a lot more popular on his own than the Avengers. What does the Avengers have that would garantee those numbers? I say let's see how Cap does since he is the most popular avenger. It'll give us a better picture i think.

I call CRAP! Marvel has given pretty damn good budgets to both IM movies The Huilk, THOR and Captain America. There is no way they would ever dream of bringing these heroes together on a small budget. Besides that, this movie was listed as one of the films with a budget at over $150,000,000 when the news broke (months ago)that Marvel was only planning on doing films with budgets over 150 mil or below 50 mil, nothing in between.

This is Bleeding Cool BS!

@ shaman

to be honest with you i personally prefer the avengers to spider-man.

as for most popular avenger to me its thor & the hulk.

so think its all to do with taste.

thor & captain america have got to pull off something special to beat robert downey jr's portrayal of tony stark/iron man.

his popular on the big screen with comic fans & non comic fans alike.

A movie like The Avengers has the potential to make a hell of a lot of money as I've said at the end of the article, and there is no way in hell I see Marvel/Disney risking a load of bad reviews by making it on the cheap. You have to spend money to make money and I'm confident that it'll be no less than epic. Bullshit sounds about right to me regarding this information.

What a load of sh1t! Marvel is spending what they're spending on Thor and Cap, building up to The Avengers, getting ready to make movie history by crossing over characters on film... And they'll do it on a small budget? Makes no sense whatsoever! Sounds like DC is getting desperate and starting to spread rumours to undermine fans' confidence in Marvel who has been doing a great job so far.

Might be true. I've heard this before. Worst case scenario- Avengers is never made. Best case scenario- They keep asking for more money and make it a huge budget movie that comes out after Ant Man and as such has the pyms as part of the team. On the other hand all this talk could just be bullshit. But I've heard a lot about the Marvel movies not getting much help from Disney.
