Mark Ruffalo Elaborates On The Evolution Of The Incredible HULK In THE AVENGERS!

Chatting recently with The Wall Street Journal, the actor whose taking over the Incredible Hulk role in this summer's long-awaited superhero flick The Avengers, Mark Ruffalo discussed the evolution of the Jade Giant.

"I don't think Bruce Banner's any longer trying to run from the inevitable, which is his voice, and that's a kind of maturation that all of us go through," Mr. Ruffalo says. "At this point, I think he's ready to turn and face this beast that he's partially created and try to integrate it into his life and use it for the good that he intended it to be used for."

"There's a lot of world-weary charm in the character," Mr. Ruffalo says, "a lot of sense of humor about himself and where he finds himself. He has this maturation that I think makes him ready to accept whatever his fate may be."

Joe Wos, the executive director of a museum of comic and cartoon art in Pittsburgh, also commented on the beastly character suggesting that he's one of the most popular comic superheroes. Mr. Wos said the top three comic-book characters with that demographic tend to be Spider-Man, Batman and Superman, with the Hulk being fourth.

"The Hulk is a very difficult character to pull off without making it cartoonish," Mr. Wos says, adding that Lou Ferrigno, who played the Hulk in the 1978-1982 television series, became a caricature because the special effects wouldn't allow for complexity. This character has such exaggerated proportions, it's very easy to lose the humanity and inner turmoil of the character underneath" computer generated imagery.

The complexity extends to the character's face: An actor must capture the Hulk's psychological as well as physical struggles, Mr. Wos says. "This is a character whose power comes from his anger. But, at the same time, once he's in that position, he still has to struggle to maintain that control so that anger doesn't go too far," he says.

I like that. We've sorta seen the same take on Bruce Banner in everything. I wouldn't mind a slight bit of confidence in the character for a change. Keep it dangerous of course. But let him instigate the change every now and then.

"This character has such exaggerated proportions, it's very easy to lose the humanity and inner turmoil of the character underneath" computer generated imagery".

You want to accomplish that? Here's a clue for you: LET HIM SPEAK! Every single incarnation of the Hulk in live action film has been basically of a mute, dumb monster. Let him speak just as he has ALWAYS done in the books and animated appearances. One line of dialog at the end of the film with him saying "Hulk Smash" or "Puny Human" isn't gonna cut it. I'm sick to death of nothing but "ARRRRRGHHH!!!!" coming out of his mouth for 99% of the film. Let him speak. No brainer!

let's have an OFFICIAL COUNTDOWN here, shall we...???

by the way, i'd rather have a 5-10 QUALITY on-the-money minutes of Hulk on screen than have that silly ol' time with him in the ang lee's movie.

still..i do hope the Hulk will have much more screen time in the Avengers, AS the Hulk.

"no. Knowing Whedon, he'll kill off the loved underdog side character like Wash in Serenity."

That, to me, was the brilliance of Whedon and Serenity. He's not afraid to have a main character die in a film. That scene just put a huge knot in my stomach when I first saw it and it affected me the rest of the film. It made you buy into the reality that not all the good guys can always live and the characters are mortal. For those that watched the whole series it made you come to terms with how you felt about Wash as a character and I think the movie would have lost some of its impact for me had Wash not been killed.

There will be more than 10 min. of Hulk.
-Hulk will take on the Avengers (Cap, Thor, Ironman)
-Hulk will smash through the Quinjet
-Hulk will fight the alien army along side Avengers

I give it at least 20 minutes tops of Hulk
