Marvel Exec Talks AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Special Effects And More

AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Victoria Alonso
Victoria Alonso, Vice President of Special Effects, Post and an Executive Producer for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man, said she anticipates Avengers: AoU topping 3,000 VFX shots, which would make it Marvel's largest VFX shot count to date. Captain America: The Winter Soldier, maxed out at 2,500 shots, and Guardians on the Galaxy, reached 2,750 special effects shots.

She told The Hollywood Reporter the Avengers sequel would likely involve seven to 12 VFX vendors in five to seven different countries. Alonso said working in multiple countries can benefit that process, as those in other countries "sometimes have ideas that we don't have. That’s what we gain by being global."

When talking about working with others in the VFX industry, she said to "fill the gap; don’t let your ego get in the way. [The Marvel process] is mostly that we forget who we are and focus on the story. Go track, go rig, the journey will get you there."

She also urged the industry to hire more women, "There’s a lot of you boys out there. Where are the girls?" she asked. "You need to get them here. It’s better when it’s 50/50. It’s okay to allow the ladies in; they are talented and bring you balance. We are better as a team if you have balance." You can read more on her thoughts regarding female leads in cbms in this article posted yesterday.

Touching on Marvel's desire to make movie in Hollywood, she said Marvel "wants to make movies in L.A.". California recently passed bill to increase tax incentives for filming in the state.  She went on to say, "If the government is ready, we are ready" also, "We live here; we want to stay here. We will be happy to commute in the horrendous traffic to be home with our families. ... They only have a certain amount money. We will apply." Many of the recent Marvel movies have shot at the U.K.'s Pinewood Studios, looks like California wants to change that trend.

So, who wants to have a spirited debate about interstate competition and the self-defeating trend of tax-incentives?

Nope, I think we all want a trailer...

@Marvel1997 Usually what happens is that the production will shoot shots specifically for post production. While editing can happen throughout filming, it is generally done after. The SFX are then added to the footage.

Good stuff, Batz! That's interesting they work with VFX teams in other countries.

More women in the industry and on this site would be good.
