RUMOR: Hawkeye Is Not Part Of Marvel Studios' Phase 2 & Jeremy Renner Could Be Recast

Having roles in both Thor and Marvel's The Avengers, Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye character is the forgotten hero in Phase 2. Why? Could Renner be absent from future Marvel movies..or even find himself recast? Read on for more.

He first appeared on the big screen in Thor and then signed on to have a larger role in The Avengers but Hawkeye seems to be the forgotten hero in Marvel Studios' Phase 2.

Why is this? One of The Daily SuperHero's Hollywood sources might have that answer but we'll get to that in a moment.

It all started when actor Jeremy Renner may have dug himself into a hole, with Marvel, talking bad about his character's involvement in The Avengers.

"For 90 percent of the movie, I'm not the character I signed on to play," Renner said to Total Film. "It's kind of a vacancy. [He's] not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him. To take away who that character is and just have him be this robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses ... I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. Fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No."

In support of Renner's comments has a point since an evil Hawkeye is not want fans wanted to see but at the same time he really should've kept his mouth closed. This isn't the first time an actor has talked bad about Marvel's portrayal of their character on the big screen. Hugo Weaving did something similar, with his Red Skull villain, in Captain America: The First Avenger and said he has no interest in reprising the role again. And he probably never will.

Looks like there is a trend where when an actor talks negatively about their Marvel role, after the movie is released, Marvel Studios moves on without that actor. Weaving will not be in future Marvel movies, despite the multi-film deal he signed with them. Now, per The Daily SuperHero's Hollywood source Renner is done as Hawkeye mainly due to his negative comments after The Avengers.

No surprise since Hawkeye has not been mentioned once in Marvel's Phase 2 by studio president Kevin Feige or Phase 2 helmer Joss Whedon. Renner's best chance to reprise his character—pre-Avengers 2—would've been in the heavily S.H.I.E.L.D. featured Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But with new S.H.I.E.L.D. additions Agent 13 and the Falcon being introduced, Hawkeye would have once again been more in the background and probably continuing to anger Renner.

Even though nothing official has been said about Hawkeye's involvement in The Avengers 2, Whedon has said he will introduce a new brother/sister duo to the superhero ensemble team. More reasoning that Renner's days are over because the hero depth chart is filling up fast and there might not be any room for the archer.

The source hints that there's the tiniest chance Renner will reprise his role in The Avengers Sequel but the source also said there is a greater chance Hawkeye will be recast (like War Machine and the Hulk have been recast before). Finally, the source said if Hawkeye is to be recast there is a solid chance he could be incorporated into the new television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a primary character.

Of course without Marvel Studios confirming any of this, take all this information as you will. However, if Hawkeye does get recast and ends up in the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show that would be a very, very cool thing. If DC can have a successful TV show starring their archer, the Green Arrow, Marvel may use that tactic too. But that's just speculation on our part.

Hawkeye has a large comic book following and is quite a popular character, so his fans would appreciate more Hawkeye whether it's on the big screen or TV screen.

If Whedon is taking an Ultimate universe approach to Avengers #16 like I am guessing, it would not make any sense to leave Hawkeye out. I don't blame Renner, he has a ton of starring roles on his plate right now and he is in his early 40's.

Can we get a few more examples of this trend? Cap 2 and 3 haven't even been released yet so there is no real trend based on the Hugo Weaving example alone. Also, didn't Portman not want to return to? :-/

Screw that guy. So he didn't get exactly what he wanted boo hoo. Everyone else in this world works crappy jobs and doesnt earn a million dollars for it. I hope they do recast him.

Nothing is confirmed and I've never heard of The Daily Superhero before this article, so I expect this to turn out false. Anyway, Hugo Weaving has an enormous ego because of the successful movies he has been in, so I honestly don't know why anyone would want to work with him anymore.

I call bullcrap and if Marvel does decide to recast Hawkeye they are stupid. They should just take Clint's character and make him a main character on the S.H.I.E.L.D show and have him show up every now and then in Marvel movies.

First I was shocked, I really like Renner as Hawkeye. And he has a lot of fans who do too. But, if he gets recast with a cheaper but still awesome actor, don't know who, and can weekly appear in a awesome (hopefully, we don't know yet) show that could be freaking awesome! If they can do Green Arrow justice, with the archery part at least I'm sure we could get the fun loving, sarcastic archer some people have been waiting for. Maybe introduce Kate Bishop and Barney along the way, or Chisholm and Swordmaster as well. This could work!

Weaving was a part of LotR, I'm fairly certain those were successful.. as well as Hobbit.

Weaving a great actor, but I wouldn't mind the recast.

As for Renner, if it doesn't make sense for his career to continue on with Hawkeye, then recast. I don't think Marvel is at fault for how they treated Hawkeye in the movie. It's not like he's an integral part of the team. He had a lot of great moments in the movie, and it would be sad to see him go.. but I'd understand why. He has a lot of star power and has a whole host of projects he can star in, instead of being a side character.

JENSEN FOR HAWKEYE!

In what could have been a career spanning multiple movies while developing "the character he signed on to play", he instead gets in a huff because he was featured as a plot device in his first non-cameo appearance as if it is a personal swipe at him.

Not a wise decision. It's an ensemble film, not a Renner headliner. Swallow your pride for a second, put on a smile, say you are excited to show more of who Hawkeye is in his next appearance... and become an icon to kids and adults worldwide.

After reading Fraction's Hawkeye I really want someone more charismatic and funny as Clint. Either Renner steps it up or he should get replaced by someone younger.

I agree AlexanderL, he wasn't the real Hawkeye, only the "reel" Hawkeye. Kill him for effect and trying to hang with the real boys - like Batman
