Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman: The Animated Series writer Marty Pasko has passed away at the age of 65, it's been confirmed today. Details surrounding his death have not been disclosed by his family, though there's understandably speculation online that it's linked coronavirus (COVID-19).

That's the case with any recent death, however, and it shouldn't distract from how sad this news is.

Pasko's career started with DC Comics in 1973 where he wrote "Private Life of Clark Kent," a backup story in Superman #277. He would go on to write titles like Action Comics, Justice League of America, Wonder Woman, and The Immortal Dr. Fate, and he even made the leap to Marvel for a time to pen licensed Star Trek and Gargoyles comic books.

He's most renowned for his television work, where he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on Batman: The Animated Series. He penned a total of 17 episodes, including memorable chapters like "Feat of Clay" and "The Cape and Cowl Conspiracy." Most notably, he also wrote the classic and beloved Batman: Mask of the Phantasm movie.

While his other TV credits include The Tick and The Twilight Zone, Pasko also served as a DC liaison to Warner Bros., vetting scripts from live-action shows like Birds of Prey and Smallville.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

@dracula - I'm not quite sure if I still 100% agree with that after Into the Spider-Verse, but those would be the two best for me.

@Kyos - Spiderverse is great, would be difficult to debate which is better. Both have some very different strengths and weaknesses.

@MCUKnight11 - it’s not even close indeed.

It’s an animated masterpiece and a the greatest love letter to Batman that’s not a comic.

@dracula - In any case it's damn impressive that it took all these years for an actual challenger to appear. Phantasm is just awesome!

To this day, still my favorite Batman film. Nostalgia plays a factor but TAS established to me the purest distillation of what Batman should be.

RIP Marty. Magnificent writing on BTAS and 'Mask of the Phantasm' - a perfect blend of building suspense and a great voice cast. (Back in the day, I remember the 'Phantasm' action figure actually gave away the ending.)

He was one of those who was a regular letter writers to comic comment pages who made the leap from letter writing to comic writing. I think if was Julie Schwartz who gave him the nickname Pesky Pasko. A great talent!

Damn man, Mask of the Phantasm may have been my first ever exposure to Batman. Came out the year I was born and I remember watching it repeatedly at a very early age, certainly before I'd turned 4.

It's what made me a fan of the animated series, and the character in general, long before I ever discovered comic books or watched the movies. And it's the reason that, to this day, if I pick up a comic book the voices I hear in my head belong to Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill. Even now I think there are elements of Mask of the Phantasm that are not only iconic, but quite possibly pretty close to definitive to the character now.

RIP
