EDITORIAL: Why I think the Bane costume in The Dark Knight Rises is an improvement over the traditional look in the comics

Just some reasons why I like the new Bane costume in The Dark Knight Rises as there has been a lot of controversy regarding his look.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding Bane's costume because of how different it looks from the traditional Bane look in the comics. I will admit that when I first initially looked at it back when the first set photos leaked online, I was sceptical, but once I looked at it more and thought about it, you can see why Christopher Nolan did what he did, not to annoy fans, but pay more function to the character and makes a lot of sense. I have a some reasons why I really like the costume.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE MASK

- Rather than having tubes coming from his head and body and venom getting pumped into his brain which is obviously unrealistic and too fantastical for Nolan's films, they have compacted it to a mask/headgear and the venom seems to be in vapour form instead.
- The mask is an advantage because with the traditional look, all Batman has to do is pull his tubes out or throw a batarang at them and he will be weakened and that is the usual predictable outcome, but because he has a mask he is harder to defeat as everything is compacted to his face.
- The mask looks more menacing than the lucador mask because everytime you look at it, you see something different such as a spider cupping his face, squid, bent screws, dog maul, facehugger, skeleton hands/fingers, clenched fists, trap (it's almost like all of your fears are in one mask aesthetically)
- As Lindy Hemming the costume designer said, the mask sort of looks animalistic (dog maul) which suits his character more.
- It also looks menacing because it covers his ears, nose and mouth and can only see the intense performance through his eyes.
- The mask still pays homage to the wide eyes on the lucador mask as there is a large space of his eye area shown when he wears the mask.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE TACTICAL VEST

- In the real world if your this big criminal mastermind, you can't walk around dressed as a wrestler as you will be laughed at.
- The costume in the comics is not functional as it has no real purpose and doesn't protect him which the tactical vest does.
- At no point in the comics in his backstory does it mention that he was a wrestler, but for some reason he dresses up like one, his character in the comics was more of a mercenary/warrior/tactician/strategist and his costume didn't reflect that but instead made him look more like a dumb brute dressed like that, so this new costume suits his character more and looks more mercenary than wrestler.
- They still kept homage to the wrestling vest straps with the V neck and the straps on his tactical vest.
- Even the camo/mountainous colours are more suited because he travels over the mountains of the world so his costume looks hand made and clunky rather than the black colour in the comics. Also the lighter brown colours is a stark contrast to dark grey/black mask which makes the mask stand out more.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT BANE'S SIZE

- After 'Vengeance of Bane' and 'Knightfall', comic book writers, film and television (animated series) haven't done him justice character wise, but stayed true to his traditional look and played up his brawn side rather than brain making him less complex.
- Also in the comics, his muscles are way over exaggerated in size and way too big.
- It is sensible Nolan decided to tone down his strength and size even though he is still strong and focus/playing up his more cerebral qualties and intelligent side of the character which hasn't been tapped yet.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THE CHOICE OF ACTOR (TOM HARDY)

- Nolan picked a real/proper actor for this role (Tom Hardy).
- This choice shows that he is taking the character seriously and wants a great performance for his cerebral qualities by a real actor.
- I'm glad Nolan didn't go the safe/predictable route and cast a pro wrestler, a body builder or Dwayne Johnson, if he did go this route it would of shown that he would have been going for the brute side of the character.
- Glad there is no muscle suits (Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut or like Bane in Batman & Robin), CGI or a pro wrestler with Tom Hardy voice over, it is just raw Tom Hardy acting with his thought out body movements.

I really like the new outfit because it's meanicing. I'll admit I'm not a fan of anything Batman except for the past 2 Arkham games and the movies from Tim Burton to Christopher Nolan. Do I think Tom Hardy will surpass Heath Ledger? No. The Dark Knight is an excellent films but Nolanites ruined The Dark Knight by over praising the movie when the movie isn't as great as made out to be. I don't consider it to be a movie that deserved the billion dollar mark but that's just me.

Anyways, Bane actually looks menacing and I love Tom Hardy as the choice pick for Bane because not only does he have the chops but also physically he's the best choice. I know the movie will do well but I'm still gonna say that The Avengers will outdo TDKR in the box office.

Because you are either mentally retarded or you are a nolan-worshipper (= ANYTHING he shits out you will gobble it up like it's the nectar of the gods).

psuedo-bane (because what's in that movie has NOTHING to do with the comicbook character) looks RETARDED; accept it, admit it, and try not to sound stupid.

I ike it for the same reasons. great artice. Don't let the people hating on the stye of a film get you down. They're the sort of peope who'll hype films like watchmen because they just look like the comics but have no substance behind them.

Who gives 2 shits if he doesn't look like exactly the comic Bane. He looks bad ass. People need to get over this comicbook costume accuracy thing. There are certain visual components about a select few characters that you can't stray too far from or you will miss the mark on bringing the character to life. Bane is not one of these characters. Bane has room for interpretation because he isn't one of the well known characters for most people. They are making Bane work for the story, not the other way around. That's when you know they are doing something right because the story comes first. Fanboy opinions over costume accuracy... Distant second.

@ColdBlood thank you for once again pointing out how big of a retarded company fanboy you are. Funny that you say the "Nolanites" love anything Nolan shits out, yet would you do the same for Marvel. You would probably defend shitty ass movies like Ghost Rider and Elektra to your grave. Why? Because ANYTHING Marvel shits out you will gobble it up like it's the nectar of the gods.

Not to say that a direct transition of his look from the comics would've worked, but they could've done a much, and I do mean a much better job at borrowing elements from his comic book counterpart. There's absolutely nothing about Nolans Bane that looks anything like the CB version. Hell, if no one said this was Bane, no one would've guessed who the [frick] he is.

Coldblood6 - 3/12/2012, 3:52 PM
@ 0SageMode0 EXACTLY!!! Brilliantly said. If noone said this was Bane noone would've guessed who the frick he was.

Get your head out of nolan's @$$ boys.

@ antonio
Ghost Rider is a piece of sh!t and I refuse to watch GR2 because that's a piece of sh!t too. FF is a piece of sh!t. FF2 is tolerable to me until fake-galactus shows up which about just as accurate a portrayal as mini-bane. X-MEN 3 is an abomination of cinematic filth.

Try not to come with crap you don't know about.

BATMAN RETURNS to this day remains one of my favourite CBM's ever.

There are four major categories that define the translation of a character from one media to another:

1: Appearance
2: Origin and signalment
3: Powers, abilities, weaknesses, etc.
4: Personality and character

nolan's fakebane completely fails one 3 of those categories...the only correct is that he in #4 as he is a brilliant tactician who doesn't like Batman.

Therefore anybody who is smart and doesn't like Batman qualifies as bane according to you guys.

Again, get your heads out of nolan's @$$. Years from now you will still be struggling to get the stink off.

@0SageMode0 if you are talking about borrowing elements from his comic book counterpart by his design, i would sorta agree. The thing about the villains in Nolan's Batman flicks is while they may not look 100% accurate compared to the comics, their characteristics and personalities that make them unique are still their and/or tweaked. Bane is an example of that. From what we have seen, he has a brilliant mind and is able to give Batman a challenge both psychologically and physically.

Everyone hated on Ledger being cast and his costume look too.

I personally think this film will have a better story than TDK.

Some people here would love to see Hugh Jackman wearing yellow tights! LOL

Well, i prefer Bane wearing tactical military outfit than some S/M shit. His essence and the motivations in the movie will define him. I confess, i never was a fan of Bane's, i think he looks silly in the comics. I bet the character will be much more respected after TDKR.

@Mothra I agree man! The costume hasn't turned me off yet. And coldblood just showed his ignorance by putting Personality and Character last he probably loves "Batman and Robin" 's interpretation of Bane.

I agree, capturing the essence of the personality of the CB character they're portraying is the most important aspect of bringing him/her to life on the big screen, but the more reasonably accurate they look (and notice I've said REASONABLY) to their appearance from the comics, the more excited and intuned you are with seeing that character in the movie. But, that's just my opinion.

I think Tom Hardy is going to blow us away as Bane like Ledger did as Joker. The only thing I am worried about is that he won't use Venom because without Venom Bane is just another generic villain. As long as he has some sort of steroid I will be content. Hardy will own and the movie will own.

I like this Bane look better because if I were him, tactical armor is better than wrestling tights. Once people see the movie, I think they'll realize the reason for the radical redesign. Thematically, it fits the archetype. Everything makes sense if some of you would remove your biases. He'll be the greatest interpretation of Batman-breaker Bane.

Hi!

I think that the suit looks great for what it is described to be based on what we know of the character. He is a revolutionary type, militant, and his army seems very scrappy/pieced together. The clothing and vest depict this, along with the combat boots and utility pants. Now, as for the mask, while it's obviously not going to be called "Venom," I think the idea of a life support system is fantastic. It makes for a plausible villain. From what I've seen given this famous image of Bane, the first teaser, and in the trailer, he is very appealing for cinematography. The light and darks that are projected off him look wonderful! I can't wait to learn more about him!

@0SageMode0

Hey there!

I'd like to touch back on a point you made about "looking like the comic counterpart." While I think some appearance is important, overall as long as the general idea of the villain is there, then I believe that the looks are something to look past. The life support/enhancer akin to venom, and the cunning strategist mastermind seems to be what Nolan has chosen to depict, the latter more so.

Although Nolans batman films have been great i'm looking forward to seeing more faithful depictions of the appearnces of these charcaters including Batman in the future.
I'm not a fan of Banes appearance but its hardly going to stop me being there opening night to see the film. Its such a simple design bane has in the comics, they wouldnt have had to include the plunging neck line or have it be a wrestling costume. For the designer to not include any significant Bane features apart from no sleeves and his mouth being covered is disgraceful. Had they even made sure the clothes he were wearing were black i'd be content. The mask is needlessly changed imo. I understand the need for the mask to allow Hardys performance to come through however surely his mask from the comic could have been adapted with the eyes removed and if you still need the mouth piece, by all means add it. I dont understand why its significant to see large chunks of his head, are we looking for emotion from his follicles?
I'm not expecting to see any venom used in a traditional sense which is a shame. I dont believe having a tube in the back of his head would have been an issue if they made it clear that bane is quicker than Batman and a better ninja thus not allowing Batman any situation to pull it out. Also with this Batmans seeming aversion to actually throwing a [frick]ing Batarang there would be no chance of that option. Whats up with that by the way? He made them in batman begins, threw ne in a wall, dropped one, now nothing. How unrealistic is it for Batman to actually be a badass and have the accuracy a simple knife thrower in a REAL WORLD circus has. Batarangs and a Grapple gun are essential to Batman but he has hardly used either.

Hey, Coldblood, if you really believe that your judgment is smarter than ours, why don't you provide an intelligent rebuttal to Mothra's arguments? Any reasonable person would find your insulting response and refusal to fairly participate in this civil debate, a sign of immaturity and stupidity.

By the way, Mothra is the smarter one. At least he doesn't try to offend people in every post.

From a member on this site that shall remain anonymous cause of the potential "war" it might start.........

"I would venture a guess that most of the "hate" on Nolan's Bat films has nothing to do with the films, Batman or Nolan. Most of it is due to the fanatical, cult following of Nolan's fans, who seem so insistent on convincing everybody else that these films are the best thing since....air. For some reason, it appears that many Nolanites for lack of a better term, have the notion in their head that all other films should cease production because they can never surpass these films.

They are fantastic films without a doubt. They are not the best thing to ever grace the screen. And it's annoying as all Hell to have to listen to TDK this or TDK that in the middle of every single conversation about every other film. Get over it. Move on. Enjoy something else. Or, at the very least, allow everybody else to do so.

I couldn't have said it better
