In an interview with Crave Online Gary mentions the possibility of a Batman four and five. This seems a bit strange since a lot of the speculation is that Nolan could kill off Batman by the end of the third movie. I stress that is just speculation, but either way Nolan has always said this third movie would wrap up his franchise quite neatly. The comments from Gary Oldman seem to contradict that. Guess we'll just have to wait for the movie to come out and see if there is still hope for more Batman in the Nolanverse.

Does ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ feel like an ending, doing the last entry of this incarnation of Batman?

Yeah, yeah. For us I think it's the end. Whether they will make more, my guess is probably. I mean, they don't have Potter anymore. So, there could be a Batman 4 a 5. It may be Chris overseeing it in a produce-rial position, but for us and for Chris I think that's it. It's a great way to go out though. It's a great story. Epic, epic thing it is.

That's the important thing, that it's really about the story.

I think Chris strikes me as someone who's too smart and he’s sort of too classy to just sort of make a third for the sake of making it. I don't think that's who he is. I remember way back saying to him, '”Is there going to be a third?” He said, “If I can get the story right. I've got to outdo myself. I've got to do it better than The Dark Knight. I've just got to get it right.” He set the bar very high, and so he said, “If I can find a story that interests me I will do it.” I think also it's genius that he's picked Bane as the villain, that he didn't go with The Riddler or The Penguin. I think right there is a wise choice.

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Garly Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

I agree. More sequels. This is only the end of Nolan as director. For the next, close to comic.

@MrReese

Im not attacking you here but it always makes me laugh when people say they want Batman films "like the comic". Which comic do you mean? The one aimed at 3 year olds where we is on adventures with his kid sidekick? Or the extremely dark violent type where he self-harms because the Joker is trying to destroy his mind?

The problem with comics as source material as such is that everyone has a run or a one off that they love and get pissed off if the big film that gets made isnt like the one they love or if the stitching on the costume is the wrong colour.

Comics work by one person creating a character and that character being in constant flux over decades, being shown in many different ways at any one time.

Nolan' batfilms are just another interpretation just like any of the comics. =]

I honestly think that if WB are looking to fill the HP void they should be seriously considering JLA movies as opposed to more Batman sequels. A JLA movie/s should be taken more seriously than just having to fill the void. Rather get more diversity in the form of a Wonder Woman movie than more Batman films. Even a Martian Manhunter movie done like a gritty crime thriller could work...think Se7en or the Alex Cross movies.

Reboot Batman for the JLA. I do think it is little selfish for Nolan's Batman to not share his world with other superheroes but it has made for amazing films. Nonetheless, despite Nolan's statements, I still think Nolan's Batman could work in a shared universe.

@MrSuperheromoviefan

So a more fantastical world then?

I preferred Batman when he was a guy in the real world who dressed up as a bat to take on the mob and crazed psychos, where the world he lived in was relatable. But I guess people like different things.

being rebooted would be better,do a shared universe that leads into a justice league movie.

I'd prefer something entirely different for the next film. James McTeigue-esque V for Vendetta style Gotham Knights ;)

@60f13

Considering mainstream audience havent heard of Martian Manhunter in the same was as most people had no idea who Green Lantern was, how do you think it would get on at the box office? A gritty crime thriller (im assuming still a pg-13) based on a green alien? Im not sure how audiences would react to that.

Justice league movie will never work, too many of their characters simply are too corny for general audience, its a fanboy only thing.

As long as they dont reboot with an origin based movie. its been done so many times. just grab a new director and cast and keep the story going while integrating the rest of the DCU into it. The end of Nolan's batman gives way for WB/DC to start creating a shared universe and eventually a JLA in several years. However this all needs to start with MOS otherwise WB/DC are shooting themselves in the foot....again....

If the Avengers can work so can a JLA. The JLA and its characters are more widely known then any of the Avengers characters are in our society.

When Batman was silly and cartoony during the Burton/Shumahker era, "fans" whined that they wanted serious, dark, and relatable Batman movies that were more grounded and with great, thoughtful storylines. Now that we have that, "fans" whine and complain that they now want a silly cartoony Batman and that story doesn't matter. Its the crowd mentality. Fanatical people always want the opposite of they have. Always. Even if its what they originally wanted...they want the opposite. Seriously people like that need to get a job and a life.

@ nomis

exactly,its what warner should of done from the start with the green lantern,now they can try & do it with superman.

marvel has created a shared universe with the characters they have,the others are with other studio's,it does my head that warner has all its characters under one roof but makes seperate universes for each.

kevshardlemonade- No, it's different people bitching in different ways. The people that wanted something like TDK aren't the same as the people that want cartoony shit. Just because you give SOME people what they want, doesn't mean EVERYBODY will be pleased.

Does anyone really think that Batman will be done after this? Can we believe that the Universe Nolan created would be dumped to the way side?

I believe that this movie could be a transition from the end of batman, but also be a legit way to introduce John Blake. After The Dark Knight Rises they then may have a Nightwing movie or have Blake take over as Batman.
I don't know... just a thought.

With Nolan's vision and genius, I'd believe he could be bringing Superman/Clark Kent into this very same Universe he created with Batman. Could help to counter with the Marvel Universe.

if it still means no shared universe then I'll pass on it. Reboot the thing so we can get a Justice League movie sometime within the next decade.

In response to your previous comment about Gary Oldman. I'm guessing you don't know who Gary Oldman is....he's been around in the acting business for a LONG time and done legendary characters and is an inspiration for most big other actors...to say his career is over after TDKR is dumb and childish. Quite recently he's done 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' which has buzz for Best Actor oscar nomination...which has been long over due.

Ive always thought the real difference between Nolan's world and Burton's was that Nolan's Bruce Wayne dresses up as a bat to stand out and Burton's Bruce Wayne dressed up as a bat to fit in.

Michael Keaton was a Batman in a fantasy world where a man can be brought up by penguins in the sewer and a lady can die and be resurrected by cats. Bruce Wayne was dressing up to fit into that crazy world and its not the sort of thing im interested in on film.

The point of superheroes (whether they have powers or not) is that they are seen as "super" in contrast to the world they live in. The problem with superheroes in comic fantasy worlds with aliens and villains with superpowers is that it compromises the feel of the world they live in which is presented to us, making the world itself super and in contrast the superhero becomes merely a hero.

Thats why id much rather see Batman in a "real" world with non superpowered villains.

@forthesakeofnow: True, most have no idea who MMH is and a film adaptation is highly unlikely, but Hellboy was adapted into a film and it was successful. Unfortunetely a movie based on the character would have its difficulties. But if a film featuring Lobo can get serious consideration why not Martian Manhunter.
Anyways, I think WW should be next.

Unless each new Batman film will surpass its predecessor mainstream audiences could get a little bored. I think WB should diversify their comic book cinematic universe instead beginning with Wonder Woman and a Green Lantern sequel (yes, I think it deserves a sequel).

JDUKE25 - 12/7/2011, 10:49 AM
@forthesakeofnow good points. Yeah I prefer Nolan's version over Burton's. But with the whole aliens and villains thing, in something like a Justice League movie I think that could work just fine in a realistic way. Kind of like how Independance Day, Armageddon, heck even Transformers incorporated all of that fantasy type stuff in a sort of realistic way. Grant it not as realistic as Nolan's previous films, but I think they could elevate the level of fantasy just a little and still make it look like that could happen in the real world.

Honestly as much as I love Nolan and his movies I would love to see a new fresh take on Batman. I want to see villians like Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Hugo Strange, Poison Ivy, Hush, Solomon Grundy, Deathstroke, Talia, and Black Mask. I don't mind Chris staying on in a Producer type role but the director and the style of the films needs to change.

I get exactly what you mean, its the balance between creative originality and giving the mainstream audiences what they want.
