Why is “The Girl on the Train” and “The Magnificent Seven” star Haley Bennett Teasing Catwoman?

Haley Bennett seems keen to be the actress to bring Catwoman to life from the page to the screen. But in what medium? Could she be in "The Batman", "Gotham", or "Gotham City Sirens?" Let's discuss.

Why is “The Girl on the Train” and “The Magnificent Seven” star Haley Bennett Teasing Catwoman?

Haley Bennett’s Instagram Activity Suggests a Role in The DC Films Cinematic Universe, or in Some Other DC Medium as Catwoman

In 2007, she debuted as fictional pop sensation Cora Corman in the film Music and Lyrics, and pretty much, flew under the radar since then. With mild successes and supporting and starring roles in various films like “The Haunting of Molly Hartley”, “Marley and Me”, “A Kind of Murder”, and “Hardcore Henry” only recently receiving real attention in The Equalizer, “The Girl on the Train”,  and featuring as female lead in The Magnificent Seven. But could she be playing one of the most famous comic book characters of all time?

This has only recently become a headline on other sites during Super Bowl Sunday and, as such has almost been buried. It was brought to this reporter’s attention on her Facebook feed and via East Coast Movie Guys. Keep in mind that this activity may not mean what we think it means. There has, in the past, been articles on DC Films members following certain directors or actors on Twitter and stories about  “__________ news site knows a guy who knows a guy, who knows a girl who knows a guy who says _____________ is terrible.” So there’s no reason why Bennett’s activity shouldn’t be worth reporting.

Haley Bennet’s activity on Instagram has been hinting at a possible role as Catwoman in something. Six days ago she posted an image of Bruce Timm’s Catwoman from the original Batman: The Animated Series with no caption of any kind.

She followed this up with an image of her hair cut short and the caption “This is me now.”

             https://www.instagram.com/p/BP8eeSkBsql/?taken-by=halolorraine />

Finally, for that particular day, she posted chopsticks and sushi with the caption “Meow”

 https://www.instagram.com/p/BP83-QxhHxX/?taken-by=halolorraine />

Then five days ago in what looks like a dance studio she posted an image that looks like Adam Hughes’ did a painting of Selina Kyle taking a selfie during down time.

What is she hinting at? Is she doing a fan film for some channel with Hollywood connections, is she playing the future Cat in a flash- forward episode of Gotham? Is she, (like the other sites are reporting, and may be the most likely possibility) playing Catwoman in either The Batman, or Gotham City Sirens? Haley Bennett is 16 years younger than Ben Affleck, which isn’t near as big a gap as Timm’s Batman/Batgirl “Brarbara” shipping, but is not as close in age as most fans see Batman and Catwoman being.  Can the creative team make this work? Do we think she can play older than 29? Who here thinks she looks the part? Will she bring talent from other films for the project?  We have seen DC Films talent bring actors from their previous works on with them. Most notably Ben Affleck with Chris Terrio, James Wan with Patrick Wilson, Amy Adams was among other Smallville alum in Man of Steel. Does this mean Haley Bennet can bring Antoine Fuqua on to direct The Batman? Did her “A Kind of Murder” co-star Patrick Wilson recommend her, did she recommend him? Most importantly, if she is in the film, will she wear the Catwoman suit first introduced in Ed Brubaker’s Catwoman comics?

Is David Ayer working on a reimagined Lee Bermejo inspired street grunge outfit like he did for pretty much all the Suicide Squad characters? She she's probably just jockeying for the role like so many other actresses. So many questions that won’t be answered until we get confirmation. But speculation is half the fun. What does everyone think, how does everyone think she’ll do in the role, and does anyone else have their own speculations, or discussion on these questions and the news that prompts them? See you in the comments section.

Update: I have provided links to the images in the article above. This is my first news article on this site and I'm afraid it shows. I apologize, but I will make sure I get the images imbedded as soon as I learn how. Again, I'm sorry.

She likes Cats and shes a (sexy) woman. She's a Cat Woman.

@Nightmare - I am trying to provide the links for her images, but I don't know how to do the inbed cod for Instagram. She does look the part in the Instagram images though.

She's probably playing the character.

She's hot but not sure if I want her as Catwoman. She's 15 years younger than Ben

@TheDonOfGotham - She's about the same age as Margot Robbie though. Which was probably the main consideration in that it is a Gotham City Sirens movie, not a Batman movie. If they had been casting a Catwoman exclusively for The Batman then someone closer to Ben Affleck would have been more of a consideration.

@WonderDog - Still, they should be thinking about the bigger picture than one film. Ben's Batman has been around for about 20 years, combined with their Frank Miller inspired interpretation, Bruce and Selina have known each other for most of that time. How weird would it be to have a 25 year old Batman chasing after a 9 year old Catwoman?

She might very well just be campaigning for the role. If they stick with the current timeline then she is way too young for Batman. Although given that Snyder cast a Lois Lane who is obviously older that Superman and the fact that Batman is so much older that Superman also...Flash looks like a teenager...I guess anything is possible in this universe.

@Forthas - About the right age for Harley Quinn though.

This would be my cast in film universe that is completely separate and unrelated to the current one.

Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn

Jessica Chastain – Poison Ivey

Anne Hathaway – Cat Woman

You've included the same paragraph twice, look into that.

You also have almost a full paragraph of speculative questions, but you offer no insight as to what you believe the answers to those questions might be.

Good effort.

@Philip - Everyone else is saying the film has "Found its Catwoman." I am just trying to avoid click bait. I know. "Isn't that the point?" But I don't want to report speculation as fact.

@Philip - I deleted the double paragraphs. Thank you. Also thank you for the "Good effort." @^-^@

Eh, I don't see it. Too cute and soft-featured. I'd like somebody sexier, more hard-edged for Catwoman. I also always saw her as non-white: probably the Eartha Kitt influence. Maybe Tessa Thompson or Nathalie Emmanuel.

I think this girl would make a better Poison Ivy.

@BestAtWhatIDo - I think they need add characters of different races, instead of race bending. There are so many non-white characters that Gotham City Sirens could showcase, and really bring them into the spotlight.

@AMrSundayGirl58 - I don't know that it's race bending particularly. Catwoman's frequently drawn pretty dark.
