As is often the case when a non-white actor or actress is cast as a traditionally white comic book character, there was a lot of backlash from certain fans when Jurnee Smollett was chosen to play Black Canary in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Smollett ended up doing a great job in the role, even if the character didn't receive quite enough screentime (her powers only really came into play near the end of the movie). Now, the actress has opened up about being cast as the iconic DC Comics movie and the response she had to some of the derogatory remarks made about her online.

"It brought a rage out inside of me, which was great for Canary," she told The Hollywood Reporter, addressing that "controversy" for the first time.

Smollett also explained that she went through four rounds of auditions and over thirty chemistry reads for Birds of Prey, something which led to her "left being like, '[frick] them.'" Co-star Margot Robbie, however, remembers things slightly differently. "We saw hundreds of actors for her role, and so many did incredible auditions, but when you saw Jurnee, it just drove everyone else out of your mind. I drew, like, 10 stars and exclamation marks next to her name."

It remains to be seen what the future holds in store for Smollett's take on Black Canary, but the hope is that she and the other members of the Birds of Prey will get to return to the DCEU at some point.

What do you guys think?

She did great with what she was given to work with. Her and Winstead were good pics for the Birds of Prey that were wasted on a Harley Quinn film

@WakandanQueen - I agree. The film wasted some real talent on a rather lackluster script.

I also agree with Robbie's sentiment regarding her casting. There seems to quite often be an immediate dismissive reaction to the casting of a non-White character in majority White films. The presumption being they can't have earned their role and beat out a White actor for it. It must have been handed to them.

It's racist in that someone believes, say, a Black actress can't earn a role, and that the cast should be White by default for every mainstream movie otherwise some "political agenda" is afoot. Even if the actor in question is critically acclaimed and award winning.

@WakandanQueen - She was for sure the best part of the movie, not saying much, but wouldn't mind seeing her guest star in a Green Arrow movie.

@thor1991 - And just like that, the point is completely missed.

Birds of Prey might have been an embarrassing flop, but Lovecraft Country looks really great

So everything is racist if you disagree with anything that has to do with people of color? Sad world we live in today. Glad it motivated her for the movie but sad that the over use of the word “racist” is devaluing and changing the actual meaning of the word.

@LandGrizzle - that's Hollywood 2020. If you don't like it. You are a racist, incel, troll, Trump-supporter

I don't see why comic book movies can create original characters, like a mix of multible characters, they can do whatever they want with their characteristics and no one will be mad.

@JustALurker - My thoughts exactly, just come up with a new name if it's not the same character. They're inviting the backlash in.

@JustALurker - Like why did they turn Cassandra Cain into a chubby pickpocket? I don't know much about her comic run, but I do know she's one of the best fighters in DC.

And they just turn her into some random kid? Lol

@KWilly - I'm no fan of race changes when it comes to adaptations, but what they did to Cassandra was WAAAAAAAYYYY worse than casting JSB as Dinah Lance.

Okay, im not on twitter so I don't know if anyone actually said racist thing or just didn't like the casting.

Now I think she did fine and when she was announced, my only reaction was, don't know who she is, hopefully she does well.

On racism, is it really racist for people to want to see the characters reflect the way they are depicted in the source material. Most of the time id say, if the character's race isnt a big part of a character, then fine cast who you want, but really

People complain when anime movies dont cast japanese actors, despite the fact that some anime arent even about japan.

You know before Wesley Snipes was cast as Blade, they were looking at white actors, I think Vin Desil, good thing that didn't happen, but really that is an example of a character who's race isn't important to the story

@dracula - If Vin Diesel was Blade, I'm sure it'd be @MarvellousPorg's favorite CBM ever

@tmp3 - Not 100% sure if he was the actor being talked to before Snipes, but if they were looking for an early 2000's white Wesley Snipes type, yeah Vin Diesel seems like the most likely person
