Captain America casting - No Need to Fret!

Captain America casting - No Need to Fret!

After the very polarizing "short list", here's the reasons why we shouldn't fret too much.

Now, I can definitely understand why hardly anyone's a fan of the short list of actors for Captain America. I'm downright confuzzled by it too. But then I remembered something.

Remember back when they were casting Thor? There was also a "short list" of contendors for the role, including Tom Hiddleston (who was cast instead as Loki), some dude named Joel Kinnaman, Charlie Hunnam, and Liam Hemsworth. While Alexander Skarsgard was the fan favorite, eventually, the producers went left field, and cast (ta-da!) Liam's brother, Chris!

When thinking in this context, it's not going to really shock me if that "short list" was a ploy, or not even the full thing. Hell, it's pretty likely Johnston and the execs will pull a similar move like Brannagh and the Thor movie producers did and cast someone fairly left field as well.
This is especially supported by the fact that they are allegedly looking to cast an unknown.

So don't worry, good CBMers! We've still got some time until our guy's announced!

Just please don't cast John Krasinski. I love him in The Office, but superhero he is not! (desperately prays)

Great article! :) I really hope that you're right about them not choosing anyone off that list! I mean, not one of them is any good! Most of the dont look the part, half of them are crap actors and they're an overall pathetic bunch who couldnt do Steve Rogers justice if they tried!

The only two good names thrown around so far are Ryan McPartlin and Jensen Ackles...hope and pray its one of them becuase even if you hate Ackles, he's better than John [frick]ing Krasinski! :)

This is what I think might happen if John Krasinski is cast as Cap:
On the day of the casting of John Krasinski:
The forums of most websites (including Comicbookmovie.com, and IMDB) are filled with tons of hate messages. Very few fans support the decision, and many fans start to protest the film. Marvel tries to back up why they cast him but cannot get over the fact that they only casted him so they could have a ‘token Jewish character’ and avoid people thinking that they did not cast John because he was Jewish. DC sees it’s moment to shine, and (hopefully) cast Ryan Mcpartlin as Superman which gets rave reviews. A main reason why the Ryan Mcpartlin/superman casting seems great was because compared to the John Krasinki/ Captain America casting it seems as great as Heath Ledger playing the joker. And or they release some great news regarding their films and it makes fans love DC even more. Thus, the Marvel hate grows.

Weeks past and the first picture of Krasinski as cap are released. Fans and basicly everybody laugh over how stupid John looks as Cap, and the anticipation for the film sinks. Later we get the first official trailer. We are wowed by the special effects, and laugh at how John is trying to be intimidating and how he looks nothing like cap. While Dc released it’s Superman trailer and once again by comparision to the Captain America trailer, it seems Dark Knight good. Also when the Superman trailer is released, Marvel starts to rethink whether they should have cast Ryan Mcpartlin rather than John Krasinski.

The two films are released weeks apart from each other. The Captain America film is panned by critics and fans. Both agree that Krasinski was wrongly cast, and seemed to be overracting and goofy looking. Though the special effects and action sequences are awesome, but fans still get mad at how Steve was inaccurately portrayed. The overall box office is low due to the fact that most fans still protested the film. On the plus side, the Superman film gets tons of praise (again due to the fact that compared to the Captain America film, the superman film seemed as good as the Dark Knight) and makes big in the box office.

Marvel, in shame, cancels the Avengers movie, and the fans start to wonder whether the 1990 Captain America film was all that bad. Dc then takes it’s place as being the superior in superhero film making. See how one casting decision can change everything. As for Jensen Ackles, he continues to give up really good roles in favour of smaller roles, and his part in Supernatural.

Do you seriously think that Marvel will cast somebody who a) will guarantee fans disappointment and b) looks and acts nothing the part? Marvel studios has had a clean record of great castings (RJD as Tony Stark, Edward Norton as the hulk, ect) and do you think they will just throw away that clean record just so they can have a ‘token jewish character’ or cast Krasinski just because they think that since he is kinda popular that he will drag in crowds and somehow manage to pull off being Cap? However, on the plus side if he is cast then it will make DC look a whole lot better. Do you think Marvel will risk both having DC look better, and having fans dissapointed?

@ M.Kazuna: Your probably right which is why I am not sweating all this interwebz rumor baloney.

It's been going on for a long time and will likely continue. BUT I do have some serious reservations about the director, his attitude, and his track record.

No lame foilers or idiotic online bickering will change that. Only good solid information.

Great article MistressKizuna, some people are getting almost annihilative(don't know it that is phrasable) about that damn wishlist/not-so-shortlist. Maybe this will calm them a little bit down :)...

Funny though I just posted an article that takes it a little further than the fretting of the shortlist. Don't know how to link to it yet, but it is just above yours in editorial. I would be very flattered if you would check it out and perhaps leave a comment... ;)

I would be very happy to see an unknown cast as Captain America. There's a better chance of finding an unknown with the right look who also knows and loves the source material, and who really wants to bring Steve Rogers to life right. I'd rather take my chances with an unknown than some vapid pretty-boy type who cares nothing about the source material and sees this as just another job.

@Diamond1995

stop posting your racist comment John Krasinski is not Jewish his mixed Polish/Irish American plus his a Roman Catholic.

if you have a issue with Jewish people i guess you did not like Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man cause he also have Jewish ancestry plus Irish, German and Scottish.

plus Captain America creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby are both Jewish aswell Stan Lee.

thats right jazzman stick it to him and john krasinski is a talented actor he may not look the part but they could easily fix that when i first heard they were considering him i thought "WHAT" but really i thought heath ledger was an odd choice for the joker and look how that turned out
