Captain America: The First Avenger Gets A "New" Title In Certain Countries!

And by "new", I mean a fairly drastic alteration! It seems that the head honchos at Marvel Studios and Paramount have decided that the current version wont go down too well in Russia, South Korea and the Ukraine...

Here are a couple of excerpts from the report over at The Los Angeles Times which reveal all of the details about this change:

The film “Captain America: The First Avenger” will have its title truncated to, simply, “The First Avenger” in those three overseas markets, according to Marvel Studios insiders. The choice was made by Marvel, Paramount Pictures’ international team and distributors in those three countries based on market research results. Those involved in the decision are being careful to frame the move as a matter of brand management and consumer awareness and not as a decision tilted by cultural or political winds.

In private, Marvel insiders said that early on in the project’s planning there was talk that the title might need to be changed in numerous international markets but that there was a ”pleasant surprise” — the brand recognition of the comic-book superhero was so strong that it overrode those considerations in many places. That was not the case in Russia, South Korea and the Ukraine.

I know that the majority of users here on CBM are American, so I'm curious: Do you find the fact that they've dropped the mention of America something of an insult or an understandable change? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place, and follow the link below for the full report.

Captain America: The First Avenger is set to be released on July 22, later this year!

Totally understandable... Unfortunately some people can't differentiate between support of the true American ideals that we were founded on, and the ignorance of most 'Mericun people & our corrupt Government.

So while I don't necessarily agree, I do understand.

Just as long as they don't change the title to "The First Avenger" here in the states, I'm perfectly happy.

The movie is about Captain America! What is offensive about having the protagonist's name in the title?!? Lame Marvel... real lame.

MIIIK - 1/21/2011, 2:14 PM
It's politics Leee, the movie needs to make money. This is a minor change and no one above should be offended by this change. Considering how capitalistic we Americans are, we should be happy that the title is being edited for the sake of succeeding in a certain market with maximum possible profits.

And it's not like they're changing his suit to all black with no stars and stripes for the international market.....people should just deal with it, buy a ticket, watch the movie, and enjoy!

seriously i think the idea of Steve rogers being called captain America was a mistake because even doe he was made for a purpose to show how Americans are, they should of just called him captain something and show how a good person is and show the humanity a lot of us have lost, that should of been his purpose.

Some countries don't wanna pay extra money. Releasing a movie with the same name generates certain duties I believe.

This is Captain America not the First Avenger. This really Disturbs Me. I am open Minded and Understand one must be understanding of others. But Come one Folks let's Be Real. Here is a chance to Announce our Pride to All The World. This is our Hero Who Fights for All. Our Country the United States needs Captain America and to Change the title to Placate a Few People Is Not Cool. My opinion.

I just hope they don't change his name in the film: Captain Freedom, Sergeant Liberty, Colonel Patriotism.

Besides, I thought Johnston said that the movie would depict "Captains" from all countries involved in the war: Union Jack, the Invaders, etc, so politically sensitive regions wouldn't feel so touchy.

Don't really see the point in this. They're still going to see the trailers showing a man called Captain America decked out in red, white and blue saving the world.

Most countries are jealous of our country. Be it the freedom, the rights, choice, etc, it's easy to see why people would be jealous. and plus we have all this freedom AND the same corruption that they have only more people get to participate in it. Everybody gets a chance and a choice.

i'm in the camp that admits that the US is corrupt and really is the world's political supervillain. Captain America stands for values that are fictional in today's American sociopolitical climate, but idealistically know no national boundaries. which is what Captain American was built on...it's been reflected in the books.

that being said, i think that it's important to illustrate that point exactly, which is why i IDEALLY don't feel the name should change. those ideals should be clear in the characterization of Captain America and let THAT be proudly stated by using his name...it would be a great contrast with the political system we have today, for artistic reasons.

that being said, the name change is also understandable for marketing reasons.

@Rodimus lol and why does the world hate America?
The ideals of the american way died with John F. Kennedy the country hasnt been the same since. Bush and Cheney absolutely tarnished the US reputation in the worlds eyes. Sadly they've done so much damage you cant even market a movie with America in the title overseas anymore, shame cause the character is so much more than just his name implies

Total non-issue. "The First Avenger" is a much more epic title anyways. I don't mean to sound un-patriotic or anything, but Captain America is kind of a lame name to begin with...it really suffers from the cheese of the Golden Age (same goes for Superman and Green Lantern).
Rodimus9
Rodimus9 - 1/21/2011, 2:25 PM
F other peoples feelings!!! The name of the comic is Captain America...and so should the movie. You shouldn't have to "understand" why they would do this. It's a pointless and utterly gutless move.
StrangerX
StrangerX - 1/21/2011, 2:25 PM
Look the studios have to make money. If they put out the title Captain America in Japan or say Germany and portray him beating up nazis and shit during wwII I doubt it will do well in those countries. But a title like The First Avenger meaning their are some Easter eggs leading up to the Avengers would be a lot more appealing.

kriswone- ya are not the only place to have all the freedom ya have cause im from Dominican republic and we are free and we aren't part of the united states which makes us more free.

That's like changing Captain Britian's name, they shouldn't have to. If you aren't smart enough to know that it's based on an old comic book, and that's what they called him, you probably shouldn't be watching it anyway. It's common sense, not political. I don't think they should censor Cap cause people don't like America. You think they aren't going to figure out that his name is Captain America in the actual movie and notice the red white and blue lol? They are treating these countries like they are babies by shielding them from "the truth" that they will see anyway. It makes no sense. People watching the movie will figure it out lol. Are they just doing that to trick people into buying a ticket and then realizing it's more than meets the eye? Not cool. False advertising.
skylarscar
skylarscar - 1/21/2011, 2:27 PM
The people in those countries are going to feel jipped when 30 minutes into the movie they say something along the lines of "we present CAPTAIN AMERICA" then he walks out on stage in his classic red white and blue costume, and the Avengers aren't mentioned until the last 5 minutes of the film.

@terrakitty: the world's supervillain? Really? Proof or you're talking out of your ass.

TRAITORS!!!! Bring out the pitchforks!!!! Light the FIRES!!!! lol. It was to be assumed. Everyone knows Cap, its brand recognition. Its just a subtle tweak for marketing purposes. To be expected. Its not like some Rooskie is gonna waltz into a theater to see "The First Avenger" and spit out his vodka and be like "WHAT IS THIS!?!?!" Come on now.

spiderman620 - 1/21/2011, 2:30 PM
i think its understandable, some countries are not USA friendly so the name change is nessesary to get people into the theater. but really this isnt news. weve known this would probably happen for a long time now. i believe there was a article posted on this site about it
Vital
Vital - 1/21/2011, 2:31 PM
daily, it doesn't make any sense. They WILL be alienated as soon as they say Captain America in the film and then have him parading around in USA colors fighting Nazis. No matter what they call the movie, when you see it with your eyeballs, you're gonna be alienating somebody in some country. So, changing the name is pointless unless they are con-ing people.

flames809 - 1/21/2011, 2:31 PM
ya all say fox wants is just money but by this ya can see marvels is doing the same there playing them to buy tickets to a movie they probably don't wanna see. so fox and marvel are no different.

Skylarscar@ dude did you read anything that was stated in her comment. I love how you pick one thing and use that to discount her entire argument. Yes it was a little harsh but has a lot of reality to it. Everything she said was true and made perfect sense. And likely, if they are going to see this movie they know who it is about. It’s just a marketing strategy nothing more nothing less.
