EXCLUSIVE: Possible Captain America Filming Location Found!

EXCLUSIVE: Possible Captain America Filming Location Found!

Here's my report, along with pictures, from the rumoured Captain America filming location in Caerwent, South Wales...

By JoshWilding - Jul 11, 2010 07:07 AM EST
Source: Josh Wilding

Yesterday, I headed down to Caerwent to see if I could find out anything about the earlier reports that Captain America: The First Avenger will indeed be filming just a mere half an hour from where I live. Well, the answer is seemingly yes. Of course, DCMarvelFreshman‘s article did point out that they wouldn’t be in Caerwent until September so I didn’t go there expecting to them right in the middle of filming! However, I did manage to grab a few quick pictures on my iPhone (so apologies in advance for them not being fantastic quality…I plan on taking a proper camera with me in September as long as I can find out when they‘re there!) to give you guys an idea of where I was told they’ll be shooting along with the statements from several people who helped confirm that Caerwent is indeed one of the locations for the Marvel Studios blockbuster!

Caerwent is home to a WWII era military base and Royal Navy propellant factory, the main building of which you can see below.

This location, along with the surrounding buildings on the site, have been used several times in the past to film BBC Wales TV shows like Doctor Who and Torchwood. When I asked a couple who live nearby the camp whether they had seen any sign of film crews nearby they told me that they did see a lot of activity around the area a few months ago and what they described as a “crew” who were looking around the base for several hours at a time, taking photographs and using cameras. I checked to see whether this could have actually been anything to do with the BBC but they said it was unlikely as they’re usually in black “BBC” vans whereas these people were in people carriers and unmarked white vans.

As you can see from the pictures above, I wasn’t really able to get that close. This was for a few reasons. Firstly, they’re doing a lot of building work outside of the camp which meant a lot of the surrounding site was cut off and secondly, the whole place is private military property and when I tried to approach the main West entrance to ask the guys there whether they could tell me anything about the movie I was asked to leave. Immediately!

I did snap a quick close up of one of the buildings though, which as you can see is (like the majority of those I could see) is in a pretty derelict condition.

Before I left, I spent some time asking around the village to see whether anyone had seen anything and while I was unable to get any concrete information, I was told by one person that they knew for a fact that a “big Hollywood blockbuster” would be filming in the area this Autumn (would that be “Fall” to you guys in the US!?) and when I started asking whether anyone had seen anything around the vicinity of the base saying “Frostbite” or “Captain America“ several people said they had seen signs appear a few months ago, corroborating the story I was told that a crew had been there, but they couldn’t remember exactly what they said. However, two people did say that “Frostbite” sounded familiar.

So there you have it. I may not have come away with any pictures of Chris Evans as Captain America or Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull but I hope I’ve given you guys a better idea of where they’re planning on filming part of this movie. With any luck, I’ll be able to find out exactly when they’ll be in the area because despite the fact that this is a huge piece of land (which surely makes it perfect for filming the type of scenes you might expect in a movie set during WWII) it’s also quite exposed, which should make it easy to take a pile of decent pictures of the action this September!

I've had that happen to me. I got lost and pulled in to an Army base to ask for directions and four soldiers came out the booth with M-16 rifles and they had one pointed at me!

Ironically, I was trying to find my way to the Army Surplus store to buy some boots! lol

Needless to say, I survived. :)

Thanks guys! :)

PETE: LMAO, I'll do my best bud!

SpiderBat209: Damn! I'm glad they werent that brutal with me, lol!

DCMF: Yeah, this movie has got to be the one I'm most looking forward to as well! I'm sure Thor will be brilliant and I'm curious about Green Lantern and X-Men: First Class but I'm anticipating this one so much more!

Juggernaut: Lol, thanks - I just wasnt sure to be honest! :P

CaptainQuirk/Lansdowne5: Nope, I honestly didnt think that Norton was amazing enough to make me want to boycott The Avengers! If we were talking about RDJ, then I'm sure I would feel a lot different but IMO there are plenty of other excellent actors who Marvel Studios could go for that will so just as good a, if not better, job than Ed Norton!

Boycott the Avengers? WHAT?!?!?!?! Why? We waited all this time for this movie and now we have one person (who mind you, would have likely had the smallest role out of all the major characters) and now we move to boycott? One bad news out of what seems to be many great ones and everybody freaks out? You guys are clearly overreacting.

McLovin'@ Couldn't agree more. I can't believe how people are freaking out over someone who was hardly going to have any screen time in the first place.

Thanks again guys, much appreciated!

McLovin/Ranger14: Personally, I dont think Banner should be in the movie for more than about 10 minutes! I want to see the Avengers vs. The Hulk. Not chasing Banner through the streets of Brazil, lol! (even though that scene was pretty cool in The Incredible Hulk!)

tea: LMAO, thanks bud! :D And my feelings exactly about Norton - the guy wasnt even that great a Bruce Banner! Personally, although it's fair to say he was dedicated to the role (doing motion capture for Hulk's facial movements etc) I thought his acting was quite stiff at points especially between him and Liv Tyler! He was a good Banner. Not a great one though IMO!
ManThing
ManThing - 7/11/2010, 10:56 AM
@ Intruder: I completely agree. What's the big idea anyway? The Avengers movie is SO MUCH bigger than just one actor. I'm telling you Banner couldn't possibly be much more than a bit part anyway!

landsdown5: That's crazy talk man. Please cut it out.

No one in their right mind would boycott a movie of this magnitude over one relatively minor casting.
STOOPUDR
STOOPUDR - 7/11/2010, 11:41 AM
I agree with everyone that thinks Banner shouldn't even be in the Avengers. Start the Hulk out busting out of that cabin from the end of TIH. Make him a little smarter and able to talk, and have him tell someone Banner is dead. Then go on with the devistation. Or really mind F everyone one and bring back Eric Banna (that was the guy from Ang Lee's Hulk isn't it).

tea: "...im happy they booted out his ass" You know what? So am I! I thought that The Incredible Hulk was a great movie but Norton did indeed just mumble his way through things! The last time I watched the movie was a fair few months back but as I sit here now, I cant think of a single moment where he really impressed me as Bruce Banner...not a single thing he did comes to mind!

Personally, I think it's important that Banner does have some sort of role in The Avengers. After all, if Loki does indeed trick him into fighting the team, there needs to be some fallout that will affect the character in future Hulk movies! (which I'm hoping for!) What we dont need is a prima donna actor who wants as much screen time as possible!

Norton's dismissal from the Avengers is only the latest in a LONG LINE of disappointments from Marvel studios since TIH and the announcement of the Avengers movie. It's becoming very difficult for some of us to be optimistic about the Avengers. This is the real reason these fanboys (myself included) are hulking-out (pun intended).

@Josh: Some of Norton's best parts (imo) in TIH were cut out of the movie .

I couldn't boycott this movie or any other movie leading up to The Avengers film because I am too much of a fan to not want to this these films but it was a shame that Edward Norton got the boot, great actor.

But I can't wait to see this movie, I wanna see how the Red Skull looks!!!

I understand that Norton has a reputation (especially with Marvel) for being a control freak. So, maybe it's a good thing that Norton's gone.

I can only speak for myself when I say that Marvel has been wearing us thin with a lot of their announcements.
Norton and RDJ being in the Avengers together was the main thing keeping me hopeful about the Avengers movie. Then Marvel gets rid of Terrence Howard (who fyi helped get RDJ the roll of Tony Stark). This was disappointing, but with RDJ and Norton, I'm sure Marvel knows what they're doing. Then they get some Shakespeare fruitcake Kennith Brawn to direct Thor and cast some random pretty blond boy for the lead. I optimistically went along with because well, IM and TIH were awesome and hopefully Thor will not disappoint. Then they get Joe Johnson (the king of meh-family-movies) to direct Captain America who was going to reveal who would play the lead by the end of November 2009... and wasn't even found until late May 2010. And after all that searching, Kevin Fergie and Joe Johnson decide that the best actor to play Cap--the selfless, patriotic, Sentinel of Liberty who will wear the American flag as his uniform and embody's the noblest qualities of my homeland--should be the Human Torch. The only reason I was able to hold it together was because there was still hope that we would see Norton and the Hulk in the Avengers. IM2 was mildly OK and VERY disappointing. Now we find out that Norton got the boot and Bruce Banner will be recast for the 3rd time. My hope in the Avengers just shattered under all that weight.

In the back of my mind I know this is an over reaction and I probably won't boycott the movie. I'm just sad cause personally I like Edward Norton (he grew up in my hometown) and I love the Hulk. Hulk related comics have been sucking sweaty monkey b*lls for the last two years (Red Hulk, Blue-Monster Rick Jones, Hulkpool, seriously?). Norton getting the boot is just the cherry on top of sh*t sundae that is anything Hulk related.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone. I'll go rub one out now.

jusme6: The only thing I can halfway agree with you on is your remark about Joe Johnston. I'm still not sure whether he's the right guy for the job especially after the ok, but nothing special, The Wolfman.

As for the rest of your points...it's a pity that Marvel had to recast Rhodey but Cheadle did such an amazing job, it didnt end up bothering me in the least. Calling Kenneth Branagh a "Shakespeare fruitcake" is ridiculous IMO! The handful of things I've seen directed by him were all pretty impressive and it's far too early to judge whether he was the right choice to direct Thor - I feel far more comfortable with him than I would some big name action director who's only good at one thing! And as for Chris Hemsworth, everything about the guy screams Thor! He looks perfect for the part and is a great actor!

And I cannot believe people are still going on about "The Human Torch" playing Captain America!!! They're two very different character who only happen to have superpowers in common. Movies like Sunshine, Street Kings and Push all show what a diverse actor the guy is and the fact we had to wait a while to get the announcement that Chris Evans will play Cap was worth it even though the few actor I wanted (Jensen Ackles, Ryan McPartlin) didnt get the part!

But you are right about the Hulk comic books. I just cant read that shit anymore! I dont need to see RDJ and Norton together because I plan on seeing RDJ kicking the Hulk's ass as Iron Man, not sitting around Avengers Mansion together! ;D

InTylerWeTrust - 7/11/2010, 1:12 PM
While I won't boycott Avengers (really? You're willing to go that far?) I'm still pissed about this. The only thing that would get me excited for Hulk again is if they got fookin' Copley to replace Norton. But otherwise, I'm still pissed, and I retain my right to be pissed, dammit! :(

JoshWilding - 7/11/2010, 2:08 PM
Intruder: Well said, right back at ya! :D I couldnt give a flying [frick] about Green Lantern! Now, I admit that's probably down to the fact I dont read DC comic books (apart from the odd Batman or Superman graphic novel here and there - I'm strictly a Marvel guy) and dont actually care about the character but even if I did I'd find it hard to give a damn about this movie! It's an uninspiring cast with a so-so director!

Marvel Studios' upcoming movies on the other hand all look superb and all have fantastic casts! Chris Evans? Hugo Weaving? Anthony Hopkins? Natalie Portman? Tommy Lee Jones? AWESOME! Ryan Reynolds? (I do like the guy for the record) Blake Lively? Uh...I cant even remember the rest, lol! Big fat MEH. :D Marvel have done a fantastic job so far and I have faith that we'll be blown away by The First Avenger and Thor! As for The Avengers - c'mon, it's going to be [frick]ing EPIC!!!
Ranger14
Ranger14 - 7/11/2010, 2:18 PM
I can't believe some people are still upset about Howard. Cheadle is a much better Rhodes than Howard was.

jusme6@ The only reason you held out hope for the Avengers is that Norton may play a few minutes as Banner? Really? I need more delivery from a movie than just a few minutes worth of it. You do know they don't need Norton to have the Hulk in the movie, right? The sky is not falling people. ;-)

GL is shaping up to be just as awesome as First Avenger. Martin Campbell directed 2 of the best Bond movies ever made and effectively brought him back from mediocrity. The first Zorro is a classic as well. I have just as much, if not more, confidence in him as I do for Johnston. Same goes for Reynolds. I have just as much confidence in him as I do for Hemsworth and Evans. He has proven that he has range beyond the "funny guy" and will nail Hal Jordan, I am sure. The GL cast as a whole is far from "meh." Okay, Lively may be "meh" but she is supposedly an actually competent actress. But Reynolds, Mark Strong (FTW), Tim Robbins, Peter Saarsgard, and Angela Bassett, among other lesser known but still good actors. That's just as good a cast as First Avenger (IMO).
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 7/11/2010, 2:35 PM
TYLER: Ah, I forgot about Mark Strong! That guy is one of my favourite actors so I have to give DC kudos on snapping him up for Green Lantern! As for Campbell, I really wasnt that impressed by Casino Royale! IMO, Quantum of Solace was the far better movie although I did like how the former stuck so closely to the original novel. (but that is of course down to the script rather than director)

As for Reynolds, I think the guy is a great actor and I cant really comment on whether he's a good choice for GL as I dont know enough about the character but it's not a role I can easily imagine him pulling off! Deadpool, yes, but I'm so sick of seeing that guy 12 times a month, I actually wouldnt care if they didnt give him a movie at this point! :P
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 7/11/2010, 2:53 PM
Hal Jordan's a cocky and witty test pilot who has extremely strong will and determination, and has no fear. That should be a walk in the park for Reynolds.

As for Casino vs. Quantum, Casino Royale was absolutely the superior film IMO. Better acting, way better villain (it is tough to outdo Mads Mikkelsen, I'll give the bad guy in Quantum that), more well-rounded script, better pacing, more tension, and the romance in Quantum was a joke compared to Casino Royale's, all IMO. Quantum was a good action movie, but it pales in quality when compared to Casino IMO.

Wow, boycotting Avengers JUST because Norton isnt gonna be in it? Bandwagonners anyone? Did you boycott IM2 when Howard wasnt gonna be Rhodey again?

Seriously, it was a kick in the nuts, but it's something to get over with. Besides, SDCC is coming up, where we can hear Norton's side of the story and his thoughts, so please calm down. And don't count your chickens before they hatch; wasn't Norton and Renner gonna be AT the Avengers panel?

Tho i'm not too chearful about it, it's nothing to just move on with. The only thing i'm worried about is the future: IH2, but for Avengers, if the Hulk is gonna be the main focus, it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. I say get Adrien Brody for the new Banner, and see where that goes from there.

BTW cool article @Josh :) nice find

and in regards 2 Deadpool, hopefully it'l be down to only 2 ongoings. MWAM has 1 issue left, and Team Up has been sucking, so tht should get cancelled! Deadpool Corps is alright, and it'd be awsum if we could boot Daniel Way and get Nate of DeadpoolandFriends & Mike Galusick writing the main book. But really, how much overexposure has Wolverine and Spidey had?
Quasimodo
Quasimodo - 7/11/2010, 3:13 PM
boycotting the entire movie, just because one ( difficult ) actor, who wont have that much screentime, has been replaced... just seems stupid to me.
