Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo And Emily VanCamp Tease 'CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER'

Attending San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" co-stars Mackie, Grillo and VanCamp discuss what befalls their characters in the film that's the bridge to "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Discussing his role as Sam Wilson aka the Falcon in the Russo brothers sequel to "Captain America: The First Avenger" actor Anthony Mackie (Gangster Squad) kept it simple, stating that "I use [my wings] a bunch. I fly a lot and I get to fight a lot. I'm looking forward to later on hopefully in 'Cap 3' and other movies that we get to see him grow into who we know now is the Falcon." Fellow actor Frank Grillo (The Grey) also teased his role as Brock Rumlow aka Crossones, hinting that you may not actually see the Crossbones side of his character until a subsequent film (probably not The Avengers sequel as its hard to imagine why Ultron would need Crossbones). Said Grillo, They're introducing a character who -- I'm not saying anything out of place here -- but starts out as Rumlow and becomes the Crossbones. That's what this film is about [for my character]. Rumlow comes into this as one thing and ... eventually, hopefully, if it goes well, you'll see this guy change. Something happens."

Actress Emily VanCamp (Revenge) also teased her role in the sequel admitting that it's just a minor part. Said VanCamp, "This is really just an introduction of this character. I'm in the movie just a small amount and you're just sort of getting to know who she is. It's sort of the beginning of who she becomes. We meet her and she's living next to Captain America and they sort of have a little moment together. here's a really sweet, sweet scene where we first see them together and that's sort of the beginning of something for them, whatever that is."

I wish I could say I was excited for this movie, but I'm really on the fence. So far everything I've heard about Cap 2 is "It's basically the Avengers 1.5". Well, we got a .5 Avengers movie with Iron Man 2, and that was its biggest problem.

I'm not making up my mind yet -- that'll happen once I see some footage.

I was there in Hall H, and it looks very promising. DP is the guy who shot Elysium and District 9, a lot of top talent and the action scenes (elevator scene specifically) was shot well and you can actually comprehend what's happening.

Ooh...Widow's gonna give her a major whoopass.

with so many new players comin in (Falcon, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch)..would avengers 2 be focusing more on them and Hawkeye..?? as the underdog avengers or something??

All this Cap hype has me worried about Thor:TDW it feels like its '08 and Cap is Iron Man and Thor is Hulk.

Don't do that to me Marvel - this isn't Animal Farm.

Sorry but DCE is too busy planning that original and unexpected Batman/Superman movie. You know, because seeing both of them for the 15th time on film in the past 34 years is really what will bring the comic book genre to a new place.

Strangely enough I felt that Cap was the better film. Thor's my favorite Avenger (tied with Hulk) but the movie didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was furious about how easily the Destroyer got defeated by Thor.

With the sequels its like all the news has been Cap, GOTG and Avengers.I know in due course we'll go into marketing overdrive but I want more good things to be said about that movie.

@Ramon

No one thought seeing Batman on film for the 6th & 7th time would bring the genre to a new place either, yet lo and behold the origin blueprint followed by arguably the best film and sequel in the genre.

Lets just wait and see what DC does with the property

@breakUbatman:

I'm not particularly worried but I can understand the concerns about TDW. November isn't that far away and we've heard tons more about a film happening next spring then one happening in less than 4 months. CA:TFA's BO is definitely a factor in this but I've also gotten the sense that they are trying to shift the "center" focus in the MCU to Cap (which some fans have complained should have been the case to begin with).

Maybe Marvel just feels like since Thor grossed more then TFA that TDW will be fine without the extra boost. But honestly since I also felt that TFA was better than Thor (and just about everyone I know that saw both agreed with me), TDW is going to have a tougher job of convincing me that it'll be worth the trip to the theater.

Much of the news about thor:tdw came out late last year when the were still filming, and since CA:tws and gotg have begun production and filming we have begun hearing news on that, while thor:tdw news has slowed down till marketing for the movie goes into full gear. Thor:tdw is looking fantastic and from the description of the footage shown at sdcc last week it sure as hell sounds amazing, as does ca:tws and gotg.

Thor:TDW looks great and I'm there day one. I do hate that we haven't heard much from Alan Taylor. I was hoping he would be at Comic Con. I'm sure there will be a big push for Thor in the next month or so.

I think with Cap, it's about getting people excited. I'm sure we will get a teaser soon and then a trailer during Thor: TDW.

But this appears to be the Cap movie I've been waiting for. We get to see Cap really show what he is capable of.

As far as quality goes, I still believe CA:FA had the best origin story out of all the Phase 1 movies and the best 1st half of all the Phase 1 movies. Unfornately the movie fell apart towards the end. We should have seen Cap as more of a WWII hero and fighting alongside the Howling commandos. We should have seen him storming the beaches of Normandy leading from the front. And if Indiana Jones can fight Nazis, so can Captain America.

I'm sad that we missed out on a lot of good stuff from that period so that they could move Cap into the present with the Avengers. The first movie made it feel like Cap was barely involved in WWII.

What's done is done. As many reservations I've had about the Russos, they seem to have a handle on the character. The tough part is making Captain America relevant to audiences of today. He's like Superman in that instance. Like MoS they will have to amp up the action for today's audiences, let's just hope they don't lose the story like that movie did.

Still hopeful Emily Vancamp ends up as Ms Marvel. She was my top choice for Ms. Marvel all along, and she's too big of an actor for a throw away part. Her character, whoever it ends up being, certainly has a role to play in the MCU.

To anyone still having doubts, Emily VanCamp is Sharon Carter. At the con, Kevin Feige introduced her as "Agent 13, AKA Sharon Carter"

I'm real disappointed to hear Sharon is a small role, she's one of my favorite characters who happens to be quite underrated, and Emily could have played her well.

I'm not sure about that. It sounds like they're building up a huge relationship between Steve and Natasha, which might well be other than platonic.

In Captain America 3, it'll likely be that Natasha will continue to have such a role, unless she gets her own movie (which is very unlikely) or she gets killed in Avengers 2 (which is extremely unlikely).
thewanderer
thewanderer - 7/24/2013, 10:14 AM
you just don't hire an established actress who has her own TV show for a throw away role. Emily in interviews has implied they are just laying the groundwork for her character in Winter Soldier. She'll clearly have a role in Avengers 2, even if its a smaller role like Maria Hill had in Avengers 1.

Plus the fact that they've been coy to an extent about her character's history and backstory. If its a throw away role, you don't make that effort.

@CherryBomb I agree. Van Camp is a much better actress than Johansson but they have made Black Widow the Megan Fox of this movies.
I'm disappointed Sharon will just have a minor role. Still this is the only Marvel/Disney movie I'm looking forward to.

BTW cool icon :)

Okay so for anybody who was curious about the Captain America: Winter Soldier footage that premiered at SDCC this past weekend, I was there second row and I saw it all, so let me see if I can give you guys a more detailed description.

It starts off w/ the extended 'elevator scene', as you all may know. What's great about this scene is how the russo's really rachet up the tension and build up to the fight. Not only does it make Cap look like a bad ass for predicting the ambush but it effectively puts you in his shoes because they filmed it so that we as the audience are seeing all the signs leading to it along w/ Cap. So Cap gets into an elevator with a glass wall facing the outside in what looks to be a government building in DC wearing his new blue 'stealth' outfit. As he gets in he pushes the button to go down and he silently waits as the doors open on another floor and the first person to join him is Frank Grillo's Brock Rumlow, they exchange some small talk as it seems they have already met by this point. Then the elevator goes down again and two regular sized guys in suits join in. Then the elevator goes down further and 3 bigger guys wearing under shield under amour join in. At this point Cap is starting to get suspicious. What really seals it is when 4 more guys hop in on the final stop. At this point there's almost a dozen men crammed into this elevator and Cap really starts to sense something is wrong, he glances around and notices that one of the men is sweating and that one of suited men is carrying a gun holstered inside his coat. Cap, looking straight ahead, casually asks 'Before we get started, Does anyone want to get off?' Rumlow responds with something like, 'This is nothing personal' (not sure because it was hard to hear over the cheers) and then the fight proper begins. Rumlow slaps a futuristic looking heavy magnetic cuff onto Cap's left arm and then he struggles a bit but right away everyone else jumps him and he doesn't have much of a chance as about 7 or 8 guys are restraining him. Like 3 on each arm, one guys has him in a head lock and the remaining guys are grabbing his legs. They just swarm him. The magnetic cuff flys up to the top corner of the elevator and it's from this situation that Cap begins to truly fight back. He breaks himself loose from the pile of guys holding him and starts using his right elbow, legs and knees, anything he can to starting knocking guys in the face with. At this point Rumlow extends this long electrically charged metal stun stick, as do about 3 other men, and start fighting with that trying to shock Cap. He manages to stun Brock and most of the other guys he's disabled already and laid them out on the floor. He has a moment to himself see he starts to struggle against the magnet pinning his arm to the top of the elevator, you can tell he's using a ton of strength as he manages to pull his arm away from the metal lining of the elevator with just his left arm but it proves to strong for him and it sucks it back in, so he twists around and manages to put his feet between the wall and uses his legs to help him pull back and free himself from the top of the elevator. Just as he lands on the ground, Rumlow gets up and resumes the fight shocking Cap several times with his weapon. Cap grabs his to wrists and is hold then above his head as he attempts to push back down and shock Cap. He gets him another time in the abdomen but Cap just grits his teeth and takes it, then he picks up his shield and starts hitting with the edge of that, he also does a front flip in this scene which looks flawlessly acrobatic and much more super soldier-y than anything in the first film. He picks up a stun sticks and he Brock a couple times with that then knocks him out. At the end of this fight scene, the camera is looking from the top down and you just see the floor littered with unconscious bodies as Cap is standing cooly over them, he uses his foot to flip his from the ground back up to his wrist. Then it cuts to black and the rest of the footage begins with quick jump cuts of the rest of the movie.

It shows several images of Robert Redford, Nick Fury doing a voice over, Cap riding his motorcycle, Black Widow fighting off some goons, Falcon wearing that black and grey suit of his shooting his guns at guys on what looks to be the helicarrier then jumping off extending his wings and flying around shooting more as the entire this starts leaning vertically, crashing into the ocean exploding. Theres cars exploding in the middle of a chase, and a quick scene of Sharon Carter entering a warehouse wearing a pant suit. There's more clips from a few more battles with Cap and he's just destroying guys, he looks very powerful but even more importantly is his fighting style incorporates a lot more acrobatic movements such as flips and kicks more reminiscent of how batman would ideally fight if they stayed more true to the comic books... There isn't any glimpses at Winter soldier at all until the very end of the trailer. But boy is that the money shot. It's a scene from the aftermath of the the highway battle out in broad daylight on the freeway over pass. You see a tight close up of the Captain's shield lying on the pavement with some black boots standing behind it. Then a metal hand reaches down and picks it up and the camera follows it up his body slowly revealing more his body and the arm as it pans up on the Winter Soldiers face. By this point he's not wearing the mask, but his face and hair looks disheveled like maybe it was knocked or torn off in the middle of the fight. You can tell because he looks sweaty and there's smudged black eye make up around his eyes, buts its cool cause it kind of echos the classic domino mask look he wears in the comics. And that's what they end it on. Honestly guys it looks great, there's nothing to worry about concerning the directors. It doesn't looking campy at all, it looked very serious. There were no moments in the trailer that looked like they were playing for laughs the way you got for instance in the Tim Story directed Fantastic Four films. It was all action packed. The best part was that in all the scenes with Cap fighting he looked just almost super powered in his ability and very fast/limber. It reminded me of the Blonsky scenes from TIH, but much much more polished and enhanced... The fight style in the first movie was just a lot of punching/boxing with a couple of shield throws, here he was doing kicking, using martial arts and parkour. A huge improvement over the original film. Plus I believe I saw a few images of him running around in the traditional red white and blue suit confirming that there is several outfits he's wearing in the film. If I remember any more details i'll come back here and post them. I hope this helped all you guys who werent at SDCC to envision what I saw...
