BOX OFFICE: CAPTAIN AMERICA: TWS Opens Huge After Thursday Night Showings

Marvel's Captain America sequel took in a massive $10.2M from last night's screenings, beating Thor: The Dark World's opening figures, and may well be on track to scoring the top April opening of all time. More after the jump.

'Captain America' Opens Massively with $10.2

As I've said before, it'd really only be news if a Marvel movie didn't make a big splash at the BO, but they've outdone themselves this time. Captain America: The Winter Soldier made a very impressive $10.2 million last night from early screenings (Note: Not just midnights). This puts the Marvel sequel on track to scoring the top April opening of all time -- with a possibility that it may even approach $100 million. It also beat the last Marvel flick, Thor: The Dark World, which took in $7.1 million in Thursday night grosses, as well as the likes of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug ($8.8M) and Divergent ($4.9M). Does this mean Captain America 3 could be considered a real threat to Warner Bros. Man Of Steel sequel? You'd have to think so!

At the risk of continuing a Marvel/DC flame war.. It's worth noting this is an April release. A spring movie beating out a summer blockbuster is interesting.

At the risk of continuing the flame war...
Let's remember this is Captain América, not a big name 3 years ago. Let's ask ourselves how much money would make a Martian Manhunter movie, or an Aquaman movie.
I'm saying this because the only reference with DC we have is Batman and Superman. I think that's not fair. ;)

Just to clarify, Man of Steel made $21 million from Thursday 8pm shows plus Midnight shows. The reason Man of Steel's $12 million Thursday doesn't "count" and Cap 2's does is that Wal-Mart advertised Man of Steel's Thursday shows heavily, while Cap has only ever been advertised as opening today. But if you're comparing like and like, Man of Steel crushed Cap 2.

"Friday AM Update: Before regular Friday shows even begin, Man of Steel has already taken in an estimated $21 million. It earned $12 million from Thursday night's Wal-Mart screening program, and an additional $9 million from general midnight shows."

The movie was great! Beats out IM1 as my favorite MCU solo flick!

Interesting story: they stopped the movie at one point because somebody's car caught on fire in the parking lot. It didn't belong to anyone in our theater, so they continued the movie then. A guy behind me shouted "this movie just keeps getting better" when that happened
