CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Draft Indicates ‘Marvel’s Best Movie,’ Says Ed Brubaker

Praising the sequel’s duo-directors and later drafts, Ed Brubaker, the co-creator of the revived Bucky Barnes’ identity, The Winter Soldier, dishes on the Captain America follow-up and a possible cameo!

While Paste Magazine caught up recently with Ed Brubaker, the comic book writer discussed Marvel’s 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldier adaptation. Having co-created the identity of the revived Bucky Barnes, which is thrown in the sequel’s subtitle, Brubaker discussed how much he’s been involved with the political thriller’s production; which is currently filming in L.A..

“It’s definitely out of my hands. [Laughs] But no, I got to go out to Marvel Studios a couple months ago and read one of the later drafts of the script. I went out to dinner with [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] and talked about the project and gave them feedback on what I liked or didn’t like or what parts didn’t work. I mean, the script I read was [frick]ing fantastic. It was the best Marvel movie. It was really strange because [the script] feels like
my comic while not really telling the same story as my comic. It’s got moments here and there where I was like, ‘hey, I wrote that.’ But mostly, it’s not what people think it’s going to be. But the tone of it was so close to what [artist] Steve [Epting] and I were doing on that comic in the first few years, where it feels like an espionage story almost more than a superhero story [and] there’s tons of action in it. I can’t wait to see what they do with it.”

“Really, it’s just that the Russos are fans of my comics and wanted me to come see what they were doing. I got to see the production art and stuff, which looks amazing. And I knew the screenwriters, I met them at the last Captain America movie and we kept in touch. I live in L.A. now and work here so I’ve seen those guys a little bit. I’m going to get to go out to the set a couple of times during the filming. They requested if I could come out for one of [Robert] Redford’s days because he’s an honorary Brubaker and I wanted to meet him. But yeah, I think I’m going to get to go out sometime during the last week of April for a day and then I’ll be there for part of the filming in May. I’ll get to watch some stuff. But really it’s just the Russos and Kevin [Feige] being cool and letting me come to see stuff that I created get filmed. It’s pretty awesome. But I wouldn’t say I’m involved or anything. I’m not a consultant or anything like [Brian Michael] Bendis was.”

The interview concluded with Ed Brubaker discussing whether he'll cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After being asked, the writer said, “I hope I get one. But I don’t know if I will. I requested to be hit in the face with the shield if possible, but we’ll see.” What do you think?

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” picks up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

Good that Brubaker has some input on this, and that he likes the Russo brothers which is a good thing to me.

This movie has so much going for it, I can NOT wait for it.

The ignorance around The Russo Brothers is frustrating, I wish more people would look into these before just reading "from the directors of You, Me, and Dupree" which wasn't great but still had it's moments.

It's Community and Welcome to Collinwood that people should be saying, "oh it's the guys who do that? Then [frick] this is going to be the best one yet." Just like Ed mother [frick]ing Brubaker just did. Nuff said.

Sounds to me like this movie is in good hands. Glad to see the Russos getting feedback from Brubaker, since he's the one who wrote the original Winter Soldier story.

More proof of how awesome this film is going to be.

When Ed Brubaker says its script "was [frick]ing" and that the film will be "the best Marvel movie" that means something. He isn't a producer or screenwriter for the film like Geoff Johns who was being paid to promote the Green Lantern movie. This guy was approached by a producer who and two directors who respected his material and wanted to get his imput.

I will admit I was originally concerned about Feige's choice of the Russo Brothers as directors for the movie. But EVERY piece of casting and creative information concerning the film since then has shown me that they are the right people for the job. We know they are major fans of the movie who wanted to go with the espionage/political thriller slant. We know they were instrumental in giving us Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, etc.

Just epic.

I'm all for a change of tone. A political-thriller (as indicated) with Marvel action over the 40's-homage that was Joe Johnstons origin movie should be good.

@capcyclopsftw

Precisely. To me the cincher was when Robert Redford signed on to do the movie. If an actor of his caliber and selective history of taking movie roles over the past two decades decides to sign on to a political thriller then Markus and McFeeley's film script must have been damn competent at minimum. Remember, Redford is the godfather of political thrillers - All the President's Men, Day of the Condor, the Candidate, etc. were some of the best ever made in the genre. Its like Clint Eastwood reading a script for a Western and signing up for the job.

@Happy11

I kind of see it the same way Batman Begins started the Nolan trilogy. Even though it got very good reviews, the film didn't bank all that much money for what they put into making it. Batman Begins spent 150 million dollars to make in 2005 and only pulled $374,218,673. Not a great sum. But DC-Warner executives were smart enough to see that a strong foundation was laid with the reboot for a more critically and commercially successful sequel. Same thing with the Captain America: The First Avenger. CATFA cost only 140 million dollars to make and pulled down $368,608,363 in 2011. Now's the time to expand and use the momentum created by the other MCU films - especially the Avengers - to propel the franchise forward with a well made movie.
RamonSuarez
RamonSuarez - 4/16/2013, 11:00 AM
@Shamo

Untrue. He's not a company shill the way Geoff Johns was when he promoted that sh-tty Green Lantern film because it was his job as a producer working for DC Entertainment. Brubaker doesn't have a personal stake beyond the fact they are taking his storyline. Fiege and the Russos didn't even have to ask him to read the comic.

Can you blame him? The only thing his crowd has left is the prayer Man of Steel does well. No JLA movie as of yet, no Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, or a successful Green Lantern film. Sad, really.
