Kevin Feige Lauds the Russos Bros. Directorship of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Further supporting the “unconventional” choice for Anthony & Joe Russo to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Kevin Feige also addresses whether they’ll bring humor to the film’s darker material.

Chatting lengthily with SuperHeroHype in anticipation of Iron Man 3, Kevin Feige addressed, once again, the rather “unconventional” decision to hire Anthony & Joe Russo to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier. When asked if the duo will bring humor to the film’s darker material, Feige says:

“We always like to break and up until people started seeing the new “Iron Man” movie, people were accusing us of going “All Dark Knight” with it and I kept saying, “That’s not what we’re doing.” It’s sort of how we were advertising it, but in the same way, we really believe that humor is necessary and to have a whole range of emotions over the course of a movie. You can get frightened, you can get deeply emotionally attached, but all those things happen more if you’re laughing and engaged throughout the journey. That being said, the Russos are incredibly talented filmmakers and have that full range. You don’t get Robert Redford if you don’t have a vision that can explain to him before he signs up to your movie. This is on top of Scarlett Johansson and Sam Jackson and Chris Evans. Everyone now as we’re in the middle of our fifth week of production and it’s going extremely well, they’re bringing a lot to the table.”

“I like that our unconventional choices, they’re only unconventional until the movie comes out and then every studio in town hires our filmmakers and they go onto bigger tentpoles from there. I’m very happy when that happens. Kenneth Branagh is starting his second post-“Thor” franchise at Disney now with “Cinderella” and he finished “Jack Ryan” for Paramount and when we were hiring him, people were wondering what was going on. The Russos I think will surprise a lot of people but they’re just incredibly hard-working, incredibly talented and keeping their heads down five weeks into making a great movie.”

“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” picks up where “Marvel’s The Avengers” left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C. Starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Maximiliano Hernández with Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Redford, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is directed by the team of Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely and is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1941. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Alan Fine, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo and Stan Lee. The creative production team on the film includes director of photography Trent Opaloch, production designer Peter Wenham, editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. and Mary Jo Markey, A.C.E. and three time Oscar®-nominated costume designer Judianna Makovsky. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” is set for release on April 4, 2014. In addition to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on other iconic Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

The similarities aren't between Iron Man 3 and TDK, that would be showering Iron Man 3 with praise. Iron Man 3 is more like TDKR...

As for Cap 2, Cap 1 was a cheesy suckfest. They hire two comedy directors and expect it to not be another campy cheese suckfest?

I'll pass, Thor 2 looks cool. I like Alan Taylor.

there is only one problem - i don't think people (besides the cb and movie fans, of course) even know who directed the god damn thing.
They going to watch Iron Man 3 - but do they know Black directed it ? And that Favreau did the first two ? Hell no.

Same with Branagh, Johnston, Russos Brothers, Taylor.

I don't think people are even interested in that :(

I'm saying that because it's a real shame. Johnston gave CA:TFA superb visual look, Branagh brought Shakespeare, Taylor is bringing GOT vibe with himself, Favreau basically created the first "real" comic book movie. Black added "buddy cop" relationship.

Uch, please don't let there be so much comedy in this. If that happens in Iron Man that's fine, but not the rest of the movies.

Despite my initial wish that it would be someone different (George Nolfi, for instance), I actually love how they decided to go with an unconventional pick, and I can only trust Marvel with their decisions, especially since none has disappointed me, so far. And judging from Iron Man Three, I actually don't mind the dose of comedy in their movies - only a few bits of it that felt a bit TOO comedic for my liking, but those are also due to the creative decisions that I believe are unlikely to also be present in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Overall, they've managed a good balance of seriousness and light-heart in their movies so far, so I'm still optimistic toward this.

And...Kenneth Branagh directs Jack Ryan? Damn it, I've never known about that! Now I'll keep my eyes on it.

caps personality is cheesy if thats what you mean nd its suppose to be

@ JerBear - Feel the same way about you, champ.

@ Indigobolt - Nah, Captain America was cheesy regardless of how Evans might have played him--thought he did an okay job. Cap sucked because of the movie sucking. The montage with that terrible music was terrible. Felt like they should've started with Cap instead of Iron Man and kept him in WW2 for two movies. Instead of the montage, put Cap and Bucky in a war movie.

Let us get to know him, then kill him.

@CavEl yea cause jon favreau gave us such a crap Iron man film since he only ever directed zathura and elf. i trust russo bros will do a good job, well cause they're got the experience, even more so than when jon went into filming iron man, and they are also huge fans of cap.

I was concerned too 'bout the Russo Bros directin', but after readin' some of the articles on here 'bout how action packed it is, I'm gonna reserve my opinion 'til the movie comes out. As far as humor in Marvel movies, I don' mind as long as they are not full out comedies. Avengers, Iron Man, Thor and Cap's first movie had just enough of everythin' to me. I'd rather be able to laugh here and there than to have to set through a movie that seems like it's 6 hours long.
KnobGoblin
KnobGoblin - 5/3/2013, 1:14 AM
It's the overly humorous tone I think that hurts the MARVEL films most of all. They seem afraid to slow things down sometimes, and undercut any and all drama with jokes, like Coulson's death in The Avengers. For that reason, their movies have no real emotional weight to them for me.

I was hoping IRON MAN 3 would be different, a more introspective look into the character, but it was just more of the same, and frankly just as sloppy and disappointing as IRON MAN 2. I wish MARVEL would learn to trust in their characters more to hold peoples attention, slow the pace a little, and their movies will have more resonance.

I'm not trying to be a hater here, that's just how I feel. Especially having just seen IM 3, and being very underwhelmed by it. I just want what's best for the genre to thrive for many years to come, and MARVEL runs the risk of burning out the mainstream if they don't try to break the formula every now and then. IRON MAN 3, the beginning of a new phase, the third movie in a franchise, it would've been the perfect place to shake things up a little. Instead, we a get a meandering mess to kick off phase 2. Hopefully Thor 2 can restore my faith some.

@CavEl; Captain America: The First Avengers big flaw, is exactly what I mentioned in my previous post. Everything about it felt too rushed. They pretty much condensed WWII into a montage in that movie.

F@ck blind faith in these companies!! If they don't put Cap back in the stars and stripes they can go to Hades for all I care. If Cap isn't back in his classic suit by the end of Winter Soldier I for one shall be very pissed. (My opinion...not yours)

Kevin Feige is speaking if he made Kenneth Branagh's career, may I remind him Branagh is an Oscar and golden globe nominee, 3 time BAFTA winner and multiple theatre awards who the f**k does Feige think he is and by the way he needs to learn how to pronounce his name properly, fool.

at the very least, Joss will nail Avengers 2. although we might get some more "Marvel Studioized characters" who go by the name of Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch. that aside, looking forward to it. should be epic.

so yeah, 2015 is guarenteed to a great year for Marvel Studios. not so sure about 2013 and 14 though.

@Coulsonlives, and? you think he's the 1st guy who ever read a bad script and said otherwise?

if it were that simple IM3 wouldn't be in the state its in. hell, if it were that simple Elektra and Daredevil wouldn't of flopped. Frank Miller directed and wrote The Spirit. still sucked though didn't?

why? because he's not fit to direct the movie just like the Russo Bro's aren't fit to direct CA:TWS.

Honestly surprised to hear you say that, however I still think you need to rewatch IM3. I LOVE how they portrayed the Mandrin, making Guy Pearce the Mandrin was a great choice! The Mandrin would be too smart to show himself publicly, however when the time was right he revealed his powers and was a formidable foe.

IM3 was a shame for me,not respect for the character, the Mandarin was raped, stupid kid's friendly, excess of humor, superficial story, there isn't confrontation with IM1,ridiculous Pepper-extremis,inconsistent motivation of the villains,Tony Stark without chest reactor, all armours destroyed nothing in that movie was made it well,it's only a silly comedy with some cgi fight, when I think and of a trilogy I expect some like Star Wars or LOTR or epic duel like Matrix not a inconstant comedy.

I agree they seem like an odd choice but until ive seen at least a trailer I wont write them off. Stranger things have happened in the world of cinema. Who'd have picked Favreau to do what he did with IM?
