Chris Evans Talks Steve Rogers Physical Transformation!

Chris Evans gives the scoop on how Steve Rogers will go from frail to brawn in Captain America:The First Avenger.

Chris Evans talked with MTV at Comic Con in San Diego and answered one of the questions many have been wondering about. How would the studio transform Steve rogers from a frail young man into the perfect physical specimen we know as Captain America?

"They got some great stuff going on right now. Initially they were going to do all body replacement — hire another actor completely and have this skinny body do the scene and do face replacement, but I guess the first couple tests weren't what they were hoping it would be, and then they decided to go with just shrinking me down. They did a couple tests. It looks fantastic and it's really going to be a big transition."

"It's absolutely one character, I think he's little Steve through and through, even after he goes through the transformation. I think you want the audience, even in the final frame of the film, to look at him and see the little guy."

Hawksblueyes: I have to say I had doubts about this movie but all the news I see tells me it's in pretty good hands.

@Whiteharted The shrinking down is referring to pre Super Soldier Rogers. When he was a frail little guy.
Have no fear, they definitely wont be making Cap any smaller!

Awesome foam body suits!!!! They should have done that with Thor instead of bulking him up, i mean who wants the real thing when you could have a foam body suits??? If any of you were watching his conversation with G4 then you would have heard him talking about that. And the extended convo with MTV he talks about the body suits as well.

I for one do not want to see him as little steve at the end. He needs to be powerfully acrobatic and demanding on the field of battle. Not "little Steve"...

chris evans better hit the gym.
he is definetly not big enough, maybe not as big as thor but he definetly needs to bulk out..

@ elephantknowsbest: He says the used foam linings to make the costume seem more realistic. Evans isn't big now because he is doing another film by the time they start filming the Cap scenes I say he will have about 15 to 20 pounds of muscle of him.

It is easy for a guy like him to put on muscular weight. He weighs about 175 Id say he would be in the 190-200 range which will look good on screen for Cap. Then he can bulk up some more for The Avengers.

I still feel he ain't right for Cap..he's a goofy comedian

@ Epic: Are you into Ultimate Cap cause if so then thats what you would get. He means more heart then Brawn when he says little Steve. Which is the real Cap IMHO.

Very cool find Hawks, and thanks for sharing.

That seems like the right way to go. CGI Evans to make him look small. Good deal.

personally I am STILL worried and still highly perterbed about certain choices that have been made.

great...just what I predicted we're going to get a 21st century pcd puny capt america.

Shrink him down....beef him up? they are supposed to start filming soon...and thats what he loooks like?

Poolsonx - 7/27/2010, 7:16 AM
@bullsize He's not a goofy comedian. You just perceive him as that from Fantastic Four or Losers. If you watch any of his other movies you would know that he is an actor, and a good one at that. His role in Sunshine was very serious and much like Steve Rogers. He even froze to death at the end, which was an awesome scene. I understand where you get this feeling from, but don't base your opinion on lack of information.

@ ThaMessenger07 I hope your right. But I think they have already started filming and they stopped to make an appearance at Comic Con. Not 100% but i think they have...
Poolsonx
Poolsonx - 7/27/2010, 7:20 AM
Personally I think his size now is fine. He doesn't necessarily need to look like he's on steroids. Cap is just as much quick as he is strong, and I couldn't see somebody built like HHH moving around like spiderman. He shouldn't be as big as Hemsworth, and he's not. CGI him as pre-soldier Steve, and keep him in the gym everyday while shooting.

If this movie is ruined, I don't think it will be by Evans. Sounds like the guy is working is @$$ off trying to get this right. I get what he's saying about the core of the character being the same at the beginning and the end.

It will be ruined by trying to stick to much into one film. Johnston will be to blame.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 7/27/2010, 7:22 AM
@ elepant: They have started filming you are correct but Evans has only done screen test he has not filmed a scene yet. They have done Hugo's stuff alone and some of the other shoots. Thats why Hugo is fit and has the Haircut going on you leave the sides trimed so it's easy to put a cap over your head when they do the prosthesis. As for Evans I say he has about a month a month and a half till they start shooting his Cap scenes. I still think they may lighten his hair and he has time. If I was training him I could get him an appropriate amount of muscle for the film in that time. But agreed lets hope I'm right! lol

Whiteharted you realize before Steve Rogers was Captain America he was a puny weakling right? That's what they're talking about, not shrinking Cap.
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 7/27/2010, 7:28 AM
@ Poolsonx: Agreed to a point I don't think he needs to get as big as people suggest but I do think he needs to get bigger. Not much though. If he could get to 195-205 he'd be perfect as for big guys being mobile you just need to train to move that kind of body speaking of a big wrestler who can move.

6'2 240 Around Caps Comic size

TheQuestion - 7/27/2010, 7:29 AM
You guys are nuts. Evans is practically ripping out of that shirt and he looks to be in great shape. He looks like a gymnast or pro athlete, and that's good enough. I don't know how intelligent humans can ever expect someone to look like the comic book counterpart which is drawn so unrealistically no one could ever achieve that body without looking like a steroid pumped freak of nature.
EpicMan
EpicMan - 7/27/2010, 7:30 AM
He needs to fight and run like Blonsky did when he fought the Hulk after his injections. Very acrobatic and beeating the sh!t out of people with his shield! Badass wrestling and American kick boxing. I can see the fight right now, and at the end the fight skirmish with like 20 nazi one last one shows up from around the corner, and the Cap just turns real quick, throws his sheild at him and knocks him out. Ohh yeah and walks away with out breathing heavy or breaking a sweat.

Mileena16 - 7/27/2010, 7:32 AM
ahhhh i feel better now. at first i was worried that they would try some weird CGI thing. but this is better, shrinking him and then when they are ready they will bulk him up. hmmm can't wait to see him bulked up.... :D

Can you guys hear the "THUNK!" sound when Captain America is smashing his sheild against the skulls of the NAZIS!
ManThing
ManThing - 7/27/2010, 7:32 AM
On the size issue:

listen to me here because I am an athlete. The nature of Captain America's powers are SO sci fi in the first place. As strong as a man can be, as fast as a man can be, as agile as a man can be??

All that without daily conditioning? Impossible. it's absolutely pure imaginative science fiction. Cool power but impossible.

And not only that, it's impossible to imagine what his body is supposed to look like. Elite strength athletes have a certain look, and the fastest runners have a certain look, and they are very very different from each other. The best gymnasts are very cut, while the strongest men are not.

So I am just not going to worry about the build. It's impossible to even imagine how something like that would even look, so as long as he looks strong I'm just not going to sweat that part.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 7/27/2010, 7:39 AM
Juggernaut: Very good points. There are different builds for different purposes.

After reading the comments, I think many of you are missing what he is saying in the video. He is not going to slim down and bulk up. He is going to be the size he is for post serum scenes and they are going to CGI his skinny, puny body for pre serum scenes.

Take a good look at this photo of him standing on stage with the rest of The Avengers cast. He is wider and thicker than Hemsworth. He is in great shape for this movie just like he is now.

Mileena16
Mileena16 - 7/27/2010, 7:39 AM
@Juggernaut- yeah your right. i should know, i'm a dancer, gymnast and coach and yet i have a very strange body build. so one way or another, i think we will have a good cut Cap.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 7/27/2010, 7:40 AM
I'm with Juggernaut, just because he's massive in comics doesn't really mean it works in reality. He would probably have more of a gymnast physique to be able to move as he does and have that strong appearance.

@Juggernaut I dont know if you know who Ronnie Coleman is but the dude is MASSIVELY strong and he is also very cut. Your average strong man competitor is not cut but take a look at Ronnie. Im not saying i want cap to look like that but you can be very strong and cut at the same time.

Next to Spidey Cap is my favorite. A lot of people are concerned with Johnston as director. Sure the Wolfman wasn't some epic, money making blockbuster, but it was pretty damn cool though. Johnston has done many many different movies, which can be a plus. October Sky was a very well done character driven film, and also a period piece. He was also the production designer of Raiders of the Lost Ark and I think I know how everyone feels about that one. My biggest point about Johnston being a good fit for Captain America is this: HE DIRECTED THE ROCKETEER! Now that movie is almost 20 years old but as far as theme, direction, and the overall look of the film goes it's a perfect fit! Does anyone remember the scene with the nazi propoganda cartoon and all of the ss trooper flying around on jet-packs? Now I'm not saying that that movie is perfect but it puts Cap into a well fitting context. Almost everything I've read about the screened footage had a quote that went something like this: "...it had a Raiders of the Lost Ark type of vibe." GREAT! Mix the adventure of that, add in the WWII setting, and the AWESOME cast that they have lined up and I think it's safe to say that Joe Johnston will win a lot of people over. I think that as a director he works better with "out there" type flicks. We are just under a year away but I have faith in Joe and the Marvel Films team. If Marvel has done anything with their properties it's making sure that the directors they use have an understanding and love of the source material, something FOX could care less about, that itself keeps me excited.
Stumblin
Stumblin - 7/27/2010, 7:48 AM
Yeah but Ronnie Coleman also can't even reach the middle of his back with his hand. He can barely move! You're talking about a body builder, of course you can be big and cut that's nothing new.

But to be able to flexible and very mobile and cut? That is pretty physically impossible, at least at that size. Granted I've seen large guys do some outlandish things like the strong dudes at Circus O'lay
ThaMessenger07
ThaMessenger07 - 7/27/2010, 7:50 AM
I agree he is good as he is but the body you guys bring up is possible just not the overall prowess. I posted that wrestler above to show a physic that comes as close to what Cap would truly look like. Shelton Benjamin Stand at 6'2 and 240. He is leaping over other 6 foot men tossing his body and springing great distances. He is performing incredible acrobatic feats of strength and agility while showing plenty of speed. You get like that by cross training the body. I don't expect Chris Evans to be 6'0 215 or even 210. I do expect to see him at around 190. His build is good and generally athletic but it is not built for any specific function. Just create a little size and function and then he would look like an athlete. A running backs body would be good which would fall around 6'0 and between 190/205.
