Hugo Weaving Reflects On Playing The Red Skull In CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Hugo Weaving was previously adamant that he wouldn't return as the Red Skull, but he's now reflected more positively on the experience. Would he ever be open to reprising the role? Find out here...

The last we saw of the infamous Red Skull, he was killed (read: transported into the cosmos) by the Tesseract at the conclusion of Captain America: The First Avenger. While fans have speculated constantly that subsequent sequels (The Winter Soldier and Civil War) would find a secret means to bring the character back, the opportunity never materialized. It also didn't help that actor Hugo Weaving, who played the villain, expressed his firm reluctance to return. "...it’s not something I would want to do again. I’m glad I did it. I did sign up for a number of pictures and I suppose, contractually, I would be obliged to, if they forced me to, but they wouldn’t want to force someone to do it, if they didn’t want to."

In a recent interview with Yahoo, Weaving reflected a little more positively on his time as Captain America's arch-nemesis, having enjoyed the experience and work behind a mask. "It was fun to play; I enjoyed the outrageousness of the German accent that I employed and I enjoyed the extraordinary mask and costume, even though it was unbelievably hot inside it. I enjoy mask work; I enjoy trying to animate masks and reveal certain things that the mask itself might not reveal. V for Vendetta was another example of that, but there was less animation within that mask versus the Red Skull."

As for making a return to the role, Weaving seems to have softened his stance a little bit, though he still seems slightly hesitant. "With Marvel, it’s pretty basic stuff: accept the deal and enjoy the ride. It’s not a major stretch for an actor, but on the other hand the difficulty with the Marvel universe is maintaining a link to a human dimension within such an extraordinary, technological CGI universe. In terms of me going back and doing another one, I don’t know. I’m not sure what they’re up to with the Red Skull."

@MattBellissimo - He's a great actor and the good guy! I would love to see him return, but I understand his point also. After all it's not like someone else couldn't take the role.

@MattBellissimo - Marvel is failing by not utilizing him! He is a huge threat for Marvel that has not been wasted! Bring him back with Loki, Norman Osborne and form a Siege style team or Dark Avengers with him as the mastermind (your led to believe Zero is the Mastermind, it's Skull all along)

In other news, I'm about to see Marvel Universe Live in about 20 mins. Spoilers to come!

Funny how he now says he enjoyed the role. Wonder if Marvel will have him in Avengers: Infinity War.

@Mercwitham0uth - He enjoyed it before too. He was just a more firm that he didn't want to come back.

"I’m glad I did it"

@Mercwitham0uth - What's the difference between then and now? No Ike Perlmutter anymore. So people from back then would love to resurface. We might even get to see a return of Betty Brant (especially since they killed that weird Black Widow romance with Hulk).

@MattBellissimo - People will no doubt accuse Marvel Studios for him saying he didn't want to come back for the role, implying his reason has something to do with them being difficult to work with, but I vaguely remember an article years ago where he said he just doesn't want to do CBMs anymore. He said he's getting older and wants to focus his career on more serious roles. I could be wrong though.

I have a lot of love for Captain America: The First Avenger and it's the best movie from the solo films for me.
